5This is the Jaguar of Espresso Machines
By h
Please trust me, although I may not be an EXPERT on coffee, I know ALOT about espresso. I have worked in the coffee business for over 5 years. I have tasted the good, the bad, and the ugly. I drink espresso and espresso drinks regularly. Through my years of drinking espresso I beleive there are two things essential to the perfect cup. 1. The beans must be dark, oily, and finely ground. They must be of the highest quality you can afford. 2. The most important....your machine must be a REAL espresso maker. Forget about those combo coffee makers. Forget about Name-brand department store machines...they all have one thing in common. The espresso always tastes weak and you cannot control the strength of it. These ordinary machines cannot give you rich espresso topped with Creme( a frothy rich creamy foam that floats atop the perfect espresso). This is because no machine, except for industrial high-tech machines used in coffee shops, can carry the pressure necessary to create the perfect espresso. This machine can! I have used one, searched for one for YEARS...even looking in Italian papers...and here it is right at Amazon! If you are looking for perfection...you've found it! The hand-pull design allows you to control the strength of your espresso..thereby giving you superior tasting espresso drinks as well. I would give this machine 10 stars because you would have to go to Italy to find such a high quality machine..honest....I really do know this stuff. If you have any questions regarding this machine, espresso, or anything to do with quality coffee please feel free to email me. Espresso fanatics..this is a MUST have.

5An espresso machine for perfectionists!
By Claire Jordan
I have owned this machine (in chrome) for over ten years and everyday when I make my morning cappuccino I love it more. You can spend more for a machine that measures the coffee, tamps it, pulls the water through and steams the milk for you, but you can tip the kids behind the counter at Starbucks and they'll do the same thing. Making espresso should be a little art and a little science and this machine an impeccable balance of the two. If you aren't the kind of person who takes joy in mixing the perfect martini, making a risotto that whispers with flavor, or whipping a meringue to impossibly tall peaks, this probably isn't the machine for you.The La Pavoni is for the person who will find tremendous joy in going to the lengths required to make a perfect cappuccino by hand everyday. (And don't bother using anything less than Illy Cafe coffee in it.)

4Mid-Size and Large Orange-X Juicers compared
By A Customer
I have owned a large Orange-X juicer for two winters, and I recently bought a mid-size juicer as a gift. I am the author of the "Best juicer, April 8, 2001" review for the large Orange-X. My Orange-X has withstood the test of time as a daily habit during orange season. Think how many kitchen appliances gather dust next to the rowing machine; daily use is the ultimate testimonial. The habit I've settled on is to rotate a bowl of several varieties of citrus into the fridge for the next glass, and squeeze one glass at a time. Cleanup is easy enough, and "just-squeezed" (as opposed to yesterday's juice in a bottle) tastes good enough, that this habit sticks.

Setting the two units next to each other, I can make some comparisons.

First, every unit has a unique personality, and some units can only fairly be classified as defective. I looked at four mid-sized units before accepting one, rejecting two as defective, and the one I accepted has definite quirks. (Hey, so do I!) This is a brilliant design, but we're not talking BMW quality control at the factory. For now, this is hands down the best lever juicer on the market, but the principle of applying leverage during a stroke can't be patentable, someone will get around the Orange-X patents with better manufacturing quality, and Orange-X will be history.

What to look for, examining a unit for defects? The base should sit squarely on the counter, not warped so only three feet touch as a time. The various assembly parts should line up vertically on the pole, so the squeezing action is "on center". The lever arm should reach a bit past vertical, so it won't come down by surprise onto your fingers. Watch the lever action very carefully. It should impress you with its beauty, not look "all twisty", and maximum leverage should occur near the very end of the stroke; too soon is a quirk.

It is obvious, mail-ordering from Amazon, that you will be studying your unit more carefully than anyone before you. You have to admire Amazon for not deleting this post. In my extensive experience with Amazon, they are dedicated to keeping satisfied customers.

Now, the differences between the sizes: Price. Weight, 16 lbs -vs- 19 lbs. Height in rest position, 16" -vs- 18 1/2". Height of handle at top of stroke, 28 3/4" -vs- 31 1/2". Maximum glass height, 4 13/16" -vs- 6 1/8". Same stroke length, 3 7/8". Same strainer basket.

In other words, the two sizes should be virtually identical in function, with the mid-size a bit less unwieldly, and an easier reach if you don't play basketball. A "jam jar" tumbler will only fit directly under the large, but most pint measuring cups fit fine under the mid-size, as do many glasses.

On the other hand, if you can put up with the price, height, and weight of the large, and you're tall enough, it may be the way to go. In some intangible way the design feels more fully expressed in the large, but the mid-size works just fine.

I found my large handles grapefruit easily, but needs a rubber shim for thin-skinned citrus. Not mashing bitter oils from the peel is an intentional design feature of the Orange-X, but the spacing is fixed, and can only be adjusted by shimming with rubber Mason jar gaskets under the strainer basket, which I sometimes do. The particular mid-size I tested requires more effort to squeeze a grapefruit, but handles thin-skinned oranges better. I believe this to be the individual personalities of the units, not a generalization that applies to mid-size -vs- large, but, heh, who knows?

3Not great for lemons
By A. Davis
I bought this juicer for home use on the basis of good Amazon reviews--but only to juice lemons and limes and this review only addresses these fruits. If I didn't use a Waring twist juicer at work, I wouldn't have recognized the difference. It turns out the twist juicer definitely extracts more juice from a lemon--it breaks all the membrane and just leaves the shell--virtually dry. The press method squashes the lemon--there is still quite a bit of juice left, which I end up squezzing by hand. Also the head on the orange x is larger than the twist juicer, which may be fine for an orange, but is too large to apply equal pressure for a lemon--much less for a lime. I always end up having to reposition the lemon and press again. I e-mailed orange x before buying the juicer to ask them specifically about this--they never replied but I went ahead and bought it anyway. It looks great on the counter, and is easy to clean (but then, so is the twist juicer at work). So, think again if your main juicing needs are for lemons/limes. My three stars are only because of its disappointing performance for these fruits. It is called ORANGE x afterall!

4Easy to Use & Clean - Great with Oranges, Lemons, Small Grapefruit - Heavy Duty- Liftime Warranty
By P. Langenfeld
This mid sized Orange-X citrus juicer is a very nice heavy duty juicer that works well and is attractive on the counter. This very heavy so called mid-sized Orange-X juicer is still plenty large for commercial or home use. It is easy to use and clean. It squeezes a variety of different sized citrus well including small grapefruit, normal sized oranges, and lemons. From reading other reviews, manufacturers apparently must make assumptions about the ideal size for the strainer cup. This juicer's strainer cup seems to be maximized for oranges. Other reports that I have read on other models, often that say they are better with lemons for instance, but then go on to say that the same juicer is less than ideal for other larger citrus such as oranges, small grapefruit, etc.I myself have had no trouble juicing lemons at all as some others claimed. In fact, juicing lemons is primarily what I use this juicer for (it excells at oranges too). I feel those claims from others saying this juicer is not good with lemons to be exaggerated and grossly inaccurate. Perhaps some other heavy duty juicers are slightly better with lemons, but as mentioned, then they seem to get reports of not being as good with oranges, etc. This juicer squeezed my lemons out completely except for an insignificant tiny thin bit on the upper sides. Ideally, if manufacturers would make different sized strainer cups available for those whose primarily focus is on one type of citrus, but I don't see any manufacturers offering different sized straining cups as an option as of yet. What is good about this juicer aside from being heavy duty (and plenty large by the way) and having a lifetime warranty, is that it uses a stainless strainer cup and the handle pushes all the way down when you complete your squeeze which is great for leverage. It also has a covenient well calibrated rubber stop to keep you from pressing too hard and damaging the juicer. It is impossible, by the way, to crush your fingers unless you take them off the rubber handle and grab the bare metal which would make juicing difficult anyway and is counter intuitive. The Orange-X juicer has a stainless steel strainer cup which is superior to aluminum ones with other brands in that that you do not need to be concerned about the acidic citrus leaching the aluminum into your juice which naturally is a concern for the health conscious. However, I have two quibbles:1. I don't like the suction cup feet. I would like to be able to pull the juicer closer for use on the counter and push it back when done without having to pull the suction cup feet loose or yank on the juicer only to have the feet leave skid marks on the counter top which they did.Good news though, for just a few dollars, I was able to buy some standard 4 mm screw on bolts and some non-suction non-marking replacement feet at Ace Hardware (called bumpers, part 51636, screw, rubber) that fit perfect into the hole left by the easy to screw off suction feet that came with the unit. I found that with these new feet, that the heavy juicer still stayed easily in place during juicing and it was easier to slide or pick up and move as you didn't have to break the suction on the feet (also didn't leave skid marks).2. The heavy handle can be left up but easily falls if you try to move the juicer and could hit your head or face when it falls if you are bending over to pull on it. However, you simply need to get into the habit of puting the handle down when done and never moving the juicer when the handle is upright.Overall, this is a very nice well designed highly functional heavy-duty juicer fit for both commercial and home use. If it were not for the annoying suction cup rubber feet, I would have given it an easy five star rating. On a positive note, as mentioned, I found quality low cost replacement feet that fit perfect and were easy to put on for only a few dollars at Ace Hardware. I fully intend to keep this juicer, would choose it again, and highly recommend it.

5Brilliant
By Dave Poole
I bought one of these a couple of months ago and although it is a bit expensive it is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. It looks great. It is so well made, it feels like it will last forever as it is so simple, no electronics to break down no plastic bits to break off. You get a huge amount of control over the way the coffee tastes, it's all in the speed of lowering the handle and the tightness of grinds. It takes a few attempts to get it right but once you've worked it out you'll never look back.

5For the person who cares
By John Lafferty
My parents bought this about five years ago and I followed suit about a year ago. When she first bought it I thought they were crazy, but when it got there I understood why.

This machine is superb for almost any kind of coffee. Sometimes I like a strong espresso and sometimes I like a cold cafe sheccerato which is a cold coffee and is great. (To make it you simply get a shaker (like a martini shaker) and fill it with ice and a few teaspoons of sugar. Brew the coffee and while it is still very hot throw it in the shaker and shake it strongly for about a minute. The result is an ice cold frothy espresso, great for warm days - forget Starbucks imitation stuff, this is much better).

As other people have said, it takes a little bit of time to get it right. Typically I've found that very thin grains are not the best to work with, something between your typical Illy coffee grain and the larger cheap grains usually works well. It take a bit to get used to, but once you start to get a hold of the whole concept it works superbly well. Frankly, even when you do a poor job the coffee is still good.

In addition, my parents have had this item for about five years and have not had a single problem. It's extremely easy to clean and if you are in a rush it's also a great machine since it loads so quickly and easily.

Also, if you are running out the door you need not wait for the water to completely heat up. You can run it after just a few minutes (of course your coffee won't be as warm, but it doesn't have to heat up completely in order to use it). For those quick out-the-door mornings, this is great. You won't have the best espresso in the world, but you'll still have one that beats just about anything.

I've been through about three [price range] machines in the last few years and they all broke or just didn't taste right. ... You have to be able to taste the difference between good and bad coffee to enjoy this machine. If you don't you probably won't enjoy this machine as much. In other words, if Folgers Instant coffee tastes good to you, move along.

It's also worth getting good coffee for this. ...

In the end, if you are looking for a high-quality product that makes high quality coffee, this is a great choice.

5Built to last
By A Customer
After wearing out three Krups minis and one DeLonghi automatic-pump machine, I wanted an espresso maker that would last a while. The La Pavoni Europiccola was much more expensive than any of my previous machines, but with its manual pump mechanism and solid construction, it was worth the price.

It's great looking -- more chrome than a '59 Coupe De Ville -- and it makes great espresso, with lasting crema and that wonderful espresso taste that comes only from water held at exactly the right temperature (just under boiling).

I did have to spend some time experimenting with different grinds and blends of coffee to get the right combination. Correct use of the manual pump also requires some practice; my first few attempts went down the sink after I tasted them. An hour or so of playing around was enough, however, and I can now have professional-quality espresso, at home, any time I want. I highly recommend this machine to anybody who's serious about good coffee.

5Incredible Bag!
By Sherry Humphrey
I have been seeking a quality taupe leather handbag for a long time. I love the hobo design and prefer a larger bag. I was hesitant to purchase from a vendor I did not know, but this bag looked as close to what I wanted as I could find (and I do my homework before I buy). This Fred & Eve bag was delivered two days after my order and it took my breath away. It is the perfect shade, excellent quality construction, soft, yet supple leather and high end hardware that will last for years to come. Don't hesitate if you prefer investment accessories that are priced right!

5The gift that keeps on giving
By Nancy Reininger
I have had Cuisinart cookware for the past 17 years. I love it! I still display it on a pot rack and people ask me if I ever use it. I am a Home Economist and love to cook. I use it daily. I am online to purchase some for a wedding gift for my daughter because I know she will love it as much as I do. It cooks evenly, it cleans easily and it doesn't drip when you pour from the saucepan. I highly recommend it.

5Simply the Best!
By Michael K. Hestness
I love to cook and consider myself a gourmet. I have used several other types of cookware, including copper, aluminum and non-stick. I have had the most success with my set of Cuisinart stainless cookware. It is designed well, cooks well and keeps its appearance after many years of use. Cuisinart is also easy to clean, I have even burned things and have been able to restore the finish.

I can't believe the performance of this cookware for the price, pick these pans up and they will bring you many years of enjoyment.

5No wasted pieces!
By A Customer
I could go on and on about how I love my set and all its great features (and I do! as the reviewer from NYC under the other 10-piece set). But what I love best about this set: NO WASTED PIECES. I hate when supposedly reputable cookware companies (hear me Calphalon and All-Clad?) stick you with useless pieces in their packaged sets. I mean, who needs an 8-in skillet? Or two saucepans that are pretty much the same size?

This set is fantastic because every piece, and I mean every piece, is functional and useful. Even the most questionable piece, the steamer insert, I use all the time!! All the things I used to boil to death, such as potatoes or corn, I now steam for better taste, texture and nutritional value.

I've had this set for over two years now, and I've put some serious miles on every piece and they still look great -- I display them out in the open. And believe me, I really bang around these pots. A few scratch marks inside from some vigorous scrubbing, but the mirror finish on the outside still remains. I recently added a non-stick wok from the same line and I have a few Le Creuset pieces which work better with slow-cook stews and soups, but really this set pretty much covers all my stovetop needs. And I love that if ever I may need replacement pieces in the future, they don't cost an arm and a leg. They are great pots meant to be used and abused, not collectors' items to be passed down to your children (which is the only way to get your money's worth from the All-Clads). An excellent value for high-quality pots meant for everyday use.

P.S. If money and maintenance are no object, for Pete's sake, show some taste and get the Mauviel copper lined in stainless, instead of throwing your money, sheep-like, at All-Clad.

5My little one loves this mat!
By dcreek09
I bought this mat for my little girl to take to day care for nap time. Her teacher told me that she loves it and takes a great nap every day. She loves to crawl inside and doesn't want to get up when nap time is over! A lot of reviews that I read said that the mats were not cushy enough, but this one is very comfy. I thought it was a little expensive when I finally decided to buy it, but it's well worth it. It is easy to take care of and my little one is very proud of her new nap mat.

4Useful for a number of chores in the kitchen
By Joanna Daneman
While I usually chop on a plastic cutting board with a big chef's knife, the Cuisinart makes several tasks a lot easier. Chopping cooked or raw meat is one. If you are making hash from leftover corned beef, a short burst in this food processor is the easiest way to go. For mixing certain pastry doughs (pie or pate brisee) this is also a very good item to have, although you have to be careful to go slowly and not overprocess. The one thing the Cuisinart does is heat up the dough if you whirl it around too much, so you have to be careful. And if you put too heavy a bread dough in, using the plastic bread blade, you can heat the shaft up enough to jam the blade onto the central post and that's a big nuisance. However, with these cautions, the Cuisinart is hands-down my favorite food processor and for shredding, slicing thinly or chopping, pretty much the best kitchen appliance for the job.

5A "gadget" that really works
By P. Drvenkar
I bought the Cuisinart food processor last Christmas...as a gift to myself. My husband rolled his eyes when I told him I had bought this..he thought this was another gadget that would get used once and then disappear forever in a kitchen cabinet. I absolutely love this machine...I use it almost everyday from chopping vegetables to making cookie/cake dough. It is easy to use...easy to put together and best off all..easy to clean. I would highly recommend this for anybody who wants something that really works.

5Great value for price!
By Home Maker
This is my first food processor that I just bought a week ago after going through all the reviews on amazon. And I must say that its totally lived up to my expectations. I found the manual and the video tape to be good help and it takes hardly any time to figure out how to get the processor up and running. The video tape also shows some of the other attachments that have to be bought separately (like thinner slicer, whisker etc)which is good to know too. The only thing I dont like about it is that its white and very quick to get dirty. The first thing I used it for was to shred carrots, and it already has a red tinge (although the good thing is that you can wash everything except the motor in a dish washer). Ive only used this food processor one week, and hope that I'll have the same performance long term! All in all, I think its a great value for money. Although I would suggest not to buy it from Amazon. My local Bed Bath & Beyond had it at the same price ($99.99), and I could use a 20% off coupon that I had on it, which brought it down to around $80!

4Easy to put together. Sharp looking. All parts were labeled perfectly.
By Donna Hooper
Received at my door within 4 days. I put together by myself (woman) in 2 hours. All the parts were there and marked clearly. It's very nice looking and functions as it should. Not as sturdy as some but for the price, no compliants. I sprayed with clear rustuleum and sprayed the fabric with scotchguard to protect from sun and rust. I also bolted the Pergola to the deck for extra stabilization. I have put together probably 4 or five different gazebos and this has been the easiest so far. Will buy another for my rental home.

5Still the best (DLC-8S & DLC-10S). Period.
By Muleshoe
It's true that the current build quality of all Cuisinart food processors does not live up to the rock solid, virtually indestructible reputation of their forebears of the 70's and 80's. ("Nothing is quite good enough" was their former advertising tag line.) However, the DLC-8S (and DLC-10S) is one of the few models that harkens back most directly to the original Magimix 1800 (from France) that Carl Sontheimer introduced to the U.S. in 1973 as the first "Cuisinart." The DLC-8S is the direct descendant of a line that includes the 2800, CFP5 and the first DLC models of the early/mid-80's and it is still the best food processor currently on the market even if it's not quite the mythical beast it used to be.All Cuisinart food processors used to sport essentially the same basic design except for their size: 7-cup (DLC-10), 11-cup (DLC-8), 14-cup (DLC-7) and 20-cup (DLC-X). It was easy to buy accessories: DLC-10 accessories begin with a "1" or an "8" (the bowl diameter was the same as the DLC-8 and used the same sized slicing discs); DLC-8 accessories begin with "8"; DLC-7 accessories begin with "0" (zero); and DLC-X accessories begin with "3." A Cuisinart was a Cuisinart.Beginning in 1989 Cuisinart's focus started to transition from engineering and design to marketing when Conair bought the company and greatly expanded the Cuisinart "brand." This marked the beginning of a period of feature stagnation, cost cutting and quality "decontenting" for food processors that resulted a couple of production runs in the late 1990's/early 2000's that were truly questionable. Plus, in 1993 a little competition came into play as Kitchenaid decided to put their own brand of food processor on the market. Cuisinart was initially caught a bit off-guard as the new Kitchenaid models featured exceptional build quality and a freshly updated design with a "blender-style" rounded oval base. Kitchenaid begin to displace Cuisinart at the top of consumer evaluation ratings around the turn of the century as Cuisinart build quality tanked and Kitchenaid surged with a fresh design and great build quality.Eventually, Cuisinart decided they had better compete and and introduced newer models (the "Premier" and "Prep Plus" series -- rounded base and a new [not necessarily better] feed tube safety interlock) and they also greatly improved the manufacturing build quality of their original series (DLC). More recently they have introduced the "Elite" series with nesting bowls and a completely new sealing lid and with an even newer safety interlock system. Here's a break down of the current Cuisinart line-up: DLC-8 and DLC-10 (original style 11- and 7-cup models); DLC-20XX & DLC-30XX (XX=07, 09, 11, or 14 cup Prep Plus or Premier models; these are the "oval, rounded blender base" models with revised feedtube safety interlock); FP-12 and FP-14 (the newest Elite models with beefy square base, full seal tapered and multiple bowls, new snap on lid with built-in interlock separate from the feed tube and "Blade Lock"). There is also another "P" series (DFP or DLC-XPN) that features the "old, original" base and bowl bowl design with a newer feed tube design. Here's the rub -- you can definitely detect the effects of "marketing" in the design of the newer models. These new features look great as bullet points on the box, but don't add anything to the utility of the original machine. The feed tube interlock on the 20XX, 30XX, DFP & XPN features a long slender stem on the pusher that inserts into a complicated mechanism with two rollers and a linkage that is very easy to jam. Plus, the long slender stem is relatively easy to break off rendering the machine inoperable. The newer Elite series with it's beefy square base (a la Kitchenaid), tapered nesting bowls (a la Kitchenaid), a snap on lid with safety lock independent of the feed tube (a la Kitchenaid) and a so-called Bladelock safety feature is just clumsy to use. I bought and returned the FP-12. It had a "huge" footprint on the counter. The nesting bowls were actually less convenient (the smaller nested bowl made the lid harder to snap on and you always had to remove it to use the big bowl). Worst was the "Bladelock" feature. It's just little nubbed prongs on the inside of the chopper blade hub that are supposed grab onto a raised molded ring on the inside of the central tube of the bowl. The idea is you don't have to hold the blade to keep it from falling out with whatever your pouring. It worked ok on the big bowl, but the prongs in the little bowl chopping blade were incorrectly molded and didn't catch on the raised ridge in the central bowl tube - anyone for a nasty surprise? The DLC-8S just works -- the way every Cuisinart has worked since the early 1980's. It may not be built quite as good as it was then, but it comes with a 3-year total warranty (for those who abuse their bowls and feed tube/pusher assemblies) and a 5-year motor assembly warranty. It proudly takes it's place alongside a DLC-10 purchased in 1988 that is still going strong (has only needed one new sheath/spindle for $12.95) and has chopped a lifetime of onions and made loaves bread out the wazoo. Every recipe since about 1980 that employs a food processor refers to this type of machine. If you want the easiest and best, this is what you want.

1Cuisinart DLC-8S is Shoddy Shadow of former Cuisinarts
By A Customer
My 1987 DLC-7 is my 3rd Cuisinart. It has had daily use and is worn and has a small problem. I ordered the DLC-8s only to find it cannot compare to my old machine even in it's state of advanced age and I am returning it. For example the cord is short and light weight. The bowl is actually smaller...11 cups is really an exaggeration. The motor is 5.2 amps compared with the 6 amps of the DLC-7 and the DLC-8S is lighter. The deciding flaw however is the poorly designed switching arms on the feed tube. They are flimsy and an accident begging to happen. I am going to have my old machine repaired and look at the Kitchen Aid processors. Very sad to lose an outstanding product.

2There are better choices.
By A Customer
This food processor is made in China. For the same amount of money you can buy an 11 cup Kitchen Aid. It runs smoother, has the slicing blades and a mini bowl. The blades are Sabatier and are excellent. We tried both machines and returned the Cuisinart.

5Browning Control Makes It Outstanding
By G. Fox
I make a variety of whole grain and fruit waffles. I bought this waffle maker because most of the others do not have an adjustable browning control - I would be guessing how long to leave the waffles in as I tried different recipes. This maker works very well across a broad range of recipes, and by varying the control I can "make to taste" doughy or crunchy waffles.

4Cusinart Waffle Iron
By Bob Carroll
Totally frustrated with burnt or stuck waffles on our old, old iron, I knew we needed a new one. Read reviews. Some praised models with an audible alarm at lower price than Cusinart. We chose C because of adjustable dial for donenes, 1-5 scale. Instructions say start with 3. After first try, we always use 4 as best for us. Would be 5 star if it also could go 'ding' when little green light says "done"! Would not be happy with preset thermo.

5A wounderful Waffle Maker!
By A Customer
I purchased this waffle maker several months ago and use it practicly daily to prepare my DELICIOUS waffles. The nonstick coating has not shown any signs of wearing away. Part of the reason is becuase there is such a excellent non-stick finish on it only needs needs a quick wipe of a soapy sponge and a rinse. Yes, it has many nice featured to tell you when you waffle is done. I have been VERY pleased with my waffle maker.
