5Pleased with Plano's engineering.
By Marvin Carnahan
I am a full time engineer and a part time woodworker.

The engineer in me concludes that there was more then the usuall napkin drawings while drinking coffee. A lot of thought has gone into the development and mfg of this exceptional product.

From the woodworker side of me I have used no other clamping product that uses so small a space yet clamps very large products, and does it very well keeping the work strait and under equal pressure.

A true 10 ********** star product. Marvin Carnahan

5Heluva Tool
By L. Michaelis
Bought this a few months ago and just had the time this past week and the necessity to assemble/install it in my shop. I'm a full time professional woodworker/cabinet maker and after using the Plano for the last week gluing up shelving for a double bookcase for a customer, I've got nothing but the best to say about it. I was fortunate to get it at a 40% off sale which made it affordable, and I'm really glad I parted w/my $$$. Just saved me HOURS of time in glue-ups. I want to recommend it so that a lot of people will use it and the price will go down. I'd like to double up on what I have and cant wait for another 40% off sale lol. Time saving, simple as hell, efficient, strong, very clever, tho expensive. I can see the springs on the mechanism are going to be a problem down the road. Hopefully the Plano folks are listening and will come up with a more easily replaceable spring - interesting how they included a few extra with the unit. Anyway, highly regarded. You'll love it - no need for biscuits and excessive aggravation with having boards gluing up flat (tho you still have to fiddle a bit)as well as alternating clamps on top and below to equalize pressure. You can even add extra clamping across the ribs if you want to really bring the plane flat.

4You really need at least 8 clamps - but a good space saver if you get enough of them
By Austinite
We just received this system - instructions were pretty bad so installation took quite a while but when we did get set up some 4/4 cherry glue ups went together very quickly and cleanly. You really need 8 if not 10 of the clamps and three rails to glue up anything over 3 ft long. The clamps dont apply a ton of pressure but they do apply it in all the right places to give tight glue joints and alignment. Will update after a few uses, loss of a star is for poor instructions and the high cost of now having to order 3 more clamps from these guys to make my existing set of 5 useful.

5Excellent portable router table
By A Customer
Absolutely no complaints about this table. It arrived in A1 condition, carefully packed. Assembly was simple thanks to both the clear instructions and the quality of the components. I doubt that constructing the table took much more than 15-20 minutes after reading the instructions.

The fence is a solid aluminium extrusion. Being a one-piece fence simplifies setting-up when working compared to some 2-piece fences. The sub fences adjust easily making zero clearance work straightforward.

The Lexan table insert supplied with the table has to be drilled and countersunk to accept whatever router you are using, which means a bit of care is required when aligning the centre of the router baseplate with the centre of the hole in the insert. Once this is done and the plate marked, the Lexan drills easily. The Lexan plate is fairly solid and shows no flexing when the router is attached (I use an ELU OF97E - now appearing as a European version of the Dewalt 621) and it works well. This router has the on/off trigger on one of the plunge handles on the opposite side of the router from the fine depth adjuster, which means it can be a bit hard to get hold of once the router is inverted in the cabinet. This can be addressed easily by putting a switch on the outside of the cabinet, if it proves a problem.

At 35lbs this table is portable enough to move around the shop as and when you need it. If I want to use the table I stand it on a Workmate and secure it with four spring clamps. This has provided plenty of stability and a comfortable working height whilst requiring minimal set-up time.

I looked at a lot of tables before reading about this one in a magazine review. I have seen nothing that comes close in terms of solid build and quality/robustness of fence for the price.

5The FINEST Benchtop router table at ANY price!
By D. B. SLAGTER
I just bought the ProTop Contractor Router Table as a second table that I could set atop one of my workbenches in my woodshop at home. I figured "Hey, for a quick round over, or a second set-up in multi-step operation this would be great. I'm happy to say this has far exceeded my expectations. Allow me to brag-on for just a "bit" (no pun intended). Why a small quality table even if you're NOT a contractor?FirstThe price point of this unit is so attractive that I thought I'd be nuts to not have a second table. The only thing a serious home woodworker lacks is "multiple" machine setups like an industrial shop. I invested almost $1,700 in my first table with a sophisticated permanent lift, a sleek table with just the holes drilled for my router, and of course extremely well machined parts for accuracy with an awesome fence. All this is great, but it still needs to be setup for each and every operation, this takes time.SecondFor many of us we have multiple routers, generally sitting in their cases until used. I thought this was just the reason to put one of them to better use.ThirdA small table is more useful than I would have thought. I mean most of the time you're only routing smaller boards, rails, stiles, etc. These sizes are quite manageable on a small table, and I find myself using this little table more and more.ForthFast, easy and accurate use. Let's be honest. It's nice to have the micro-fine adjustments of the higher end tables with a great lift. But, a good router today sells with an above-the-table adjustment tool. So it's entirely possible to get 1/64th adjustments with the turn of a $20 accessory! So what impressed me the most about the ProTop unit?1. Everything, and I mean everything fit perfectly the first time2. The instructions - if followed, are accurate and well done.3. There are extra parts in case you loose one - hurray! (I must admit though, I called tech support wondering why I was left with 4 lock washers, my answer was "we threw them in with the previous version, so don't worry about it you won't need them".4. The price! Who cares if it took me a few hours to put together this little wonder, I didn't want to spend another $1,700 like I did on the last table. The most time consuming element is getting the router plate "just right".5. It looks great when assembled, and the finish is really first class for any shop.6. Even the doggone decals look great. (I normally would never put these things on)7. This is even more embarrassing, I bought two "orange" feather-locs" by Benchdog since they match so nicely! (They also work great, too)8. The "Lighted" Power Switch (option) also matches nicely and is SO practical and safe by being able to put it ON top of the fence.9. This thing is quiet.10. The table is flat.11. The engineering is an elegant use of simple concepts to achieve the fit, the flatness, and it's square, true fence.10. The fence is smooth AND SIMPLE TO USE11.It works with lots of options. I simply got a different plate, drilled it out and viola! I had my above the table micro-fine adjustment tool put to work - I HAD NEVER USED THAT THING UNTIL NOW!! I wonder if I'm the only woodworker who buys these gadgets but doesn't actually use them for months?12. The aluminum extrusions are true and flat, and really are the finishing touch for making a great table and fence at any price. This thing will do you proud. If you're a woodworker, you'll wish you had developed this thing. It's a beautiful piece to just look at, not to mention a joy to use.

5Bench Dog's Pro Top Portable Router Table
By Leon Berkowitz
The Pro Top arrived in excellent condition. Nothing lose, rubbing or parts missing. Assembly was easy as long as you follow directions. The individual components are of a very good quality. I tested the assembled unit using a Porter Cable model 6931 without any installation problem. I am impressed with the results and look forward to getting a lot of use from this invaluable addition to my growing workshop. Thank you folks at Bench Dog for a great design with exceptional features.

4Nice table, directions could be better
By Mark C Willequer
The completed table is a great solid product. The instructions however for assembly are not very clear and not to be undertaken by a beginner.

The leg assembly table insturctions indicated that the top should be drilled into the holes on the long table extentions, meanwhile the pre drilled holes are in the short table..........

The router fence came with no instructions except a templete for a non rousseau table

In general.........this needs improvement..........how do I like my completed table..........LOVE IT.

By Wendell D. Reynolds
Directions are hard to follow due to picture diagrams not being very detailed. 3/8 holes were in short rails as indicated by directions and this attached top of table to legs with four screws. Arm that came with table is simple and easy to install into the table top. I also purchased router lift from Rousseau for a Makita 2 1/4HP for this table which fit perfectly. This is a great basic table for routing and very stable once completed. Love the table.

5If I Can Do It, Anyone Can!
By Bob
Having heard how easy it was to make good dovetail joints with the Keller system and after a lot of research, I bought the Journeyman Model 1500 system. "Easy" may be a slight reach for a newcomer, but with a bit of reading and understanding of the instructions, it all worked out okay. The instruction manual is written for their aluminum templates with a single sheet inserted for the 1500, but the process is generally the same for both types of templates. The 1500 requires a block of wood 2¼ x 3½ x about 18 inches on which the template is mounted. I don't think these dimensions are very critical. The workpiece is clamped vertically in a vise and the block of wood is clamped on the side of the workpiece with the template projecting over the edge to be dovetailed. It is suggested you put the block on the near side of the workpiece so you route away from you and so the chips don't come off in your face. Keller provides two router bits - one to cut the tails (a dovetail bit) and one for the pins (a straight bit). You cut the tails first, then put the mating workpiece in the vise and lay the just-cut piece with the tails on the edge (line it up good) and scribe the inside of one of the tail cutouts on the new workpiece. Then you align the template pin side OVER the scribed lines and clamp it down. This determines what will remain when you route the pins. The first set came out okay but were too tight. Keller provides instructions on how to loosen up the joint (slide the pin side of the template further onto the backing block). I nearly wore out the screws holding the template to the block of wood with my fiddling around to get the joints fitting the way I wanted. The Keller system makes through dovetails, so if you want half-blind dovetails, this is not the one you want unless there is a trick I am not aware of. IMO I think through dovetails are more elegant than half-blind as you see the artistry on both sides of the joint. I also like the idea of not being limited to a maximum width workpiece. I understand additional router bits are available for box joints.

5change the block
By W. F. Marterre Jr.
This is a great jig. The backing block thickness dimension needs an adjustment in order to make hardwood joints that aren't too tight, however - read other reviews. The 3 1/2" depth isn't critical; neither is the 18" length. I suggest milling the block out of poplar, soft maple, or (like I did) salvaged yellow pine in order to get a thickness of 2 5/16" (not 2 1/4", as instructed). Then set the scribed line BACK exactly 1/16" by making your own scribe on the dovetail side and set your screws in. This will allow your pins to be slightly thinner than they would be with the instructed measurements. Then play with the router bit depths between 1/32" and 1/16" extra (beyond your stock thickness and the 1/2" thickness of the jig) to fine tune (a deeper dovetail bit will make the joint tighter). I had perfect joints that just needed a little sanding after only 15 minutes! These were the first dovetail joints I've ever cut in my life (and only the second time I'd ever used a router)!

5Precision Dovetails made too dang easy.
By Mike Martin
I've been woodworking for over 20 years, and used to cut dovetails by hand. I looked at the jigs but was always put off by the high price and big manuals. I read a review on different jigs and the Keller was deemed the simplest to use. I bought it and could not be happier. It took me about 5 minutes to screw the jig to a backer board, and 10 minutes later I was putting together the first joint. It was perfect. My only regret is not buying this thing years ago. It's so simple, you don't even need to keep the booklet around, because there is nothing really to set up. Bit depth is not critical, you just set it a hair deeper than the wood thickness. I now can buzz through a whole project's dovetails faster than I used to chop out one side by hand, and they look better too. I'd be surprized if anyone was disappointed with this jig.

5Easy to use!
By Kenny bond
I watched the video, went to my shop, set up my Dovertail machine and the only setting i had to change that the video suggested was the depth of the dovetail bit. The precision was incredible, and best yet repeatable! I love this machine, my wife just got me the variable spaced template (more on that later)!

5Turned Good into Great
By David Lindamood
The Carter bandsaw guide has turned my 14" bandsaw from a good system to a GREAT system. I hesitated to buy the guides, because of the price, but it is well worth the investment. Maintaining blade alignment is now a snap, resawing is dead straight, circular cuts do not wave or float from the workpiece. The blade travel is very easy to control and maintain.

The installation was very simple and easy, took about 15 minutes, and most of that was actually reading the directions. Adjustment is also very simple. The bearings adjust forward/backward and side to side, so each blade setup can be easliy accomplished with a simple allen wrench.

I mainly used the saw for resawing, but now I am using the bandsaw for scrollsaw type work and bandsaw boxes. The smaller blades (1/8") are a little trickier to set up, (the blade teeth have to be in the guide groove), but I'm now able to make many items I would have never tried before.

If added accuratecy is what you are looking for, then the Carter bandsaw guides will help acheive a consistent product. Well worth the investment.!

2Great Guides, but be careful!
By Jeffrey A. Smith

Don't get these guides if you're planning on using 1/8" blades. These guides are great for resawing and heavy cutting where you're going to use a wide blade, but you can't use thin blades on these guides, so you can forget making really tight turns (as in cutting a bandsaw box or when doing tight scrolling). Plus, the price of these guides will leave a sore spot where your wallet used to be.

These are GREAT for specialized purposes where a wide blade can be used, but for general bandsaw work in a small shop where different blade widths are used commonly, I'd rather have a good set of cool blocks and pocket the difference in the cost!

5The Kindest Cut
By Marc Ruby™
I have a fairly recent 14" Delta bandsaw which has been pretty accurate through most of its life. Until, out of the blue, is snapped the upper wheel mount. Delta cheerfully replaced the part, but for some reason, the blade suddenly developed a tendency to yaw when resawing under full steam. I decided that, if I was going to go through all the adjustment hassle I might as well extend the height as well. To my surprise and delight, this worked, but the blade would intermittently wander, and then, just as suddenly start working perfectly again. Definitely time to tear my hair out.I already had a set of cheap ball bearing guides in the saw, but since the problem had to be in the guide performance somewhere, I bit the bullet and sprang for the Carter's. These have an excellent reputation among woodworkers. So I figured that the risk was minimal. I normally have a 1/2" blade on the saw - while the Carters don't work well with 1/8" blades they do fine with everything else. For tight curves I prefer a real scroll saw, anyway.Installation is basically a case of removing the entire upper and lower guide mechanisms from the saw. No small feat, but doable, The upper guides fit neatly on the round post (there is a different set available it you have the old hex posts). The lower disassembly is a bit more complicated as you are removing both the guide set and the adjusters. Putting the new bearing set in was something of a trip, since the bolts are definitely not easy to turn. By all means, get a hex driver set for your socket wrench, you will need them.Adjustment is uncomplicated, although you have to do without the Delta's dial adjusters. But basically all you do is loosen the socket screws for the bearings and set them up correctly relative to the blade. You may have to adjust the upper wheel angle a bit as well, but in essence it is exactly what you did before (although you will now need two allen wrenches to change a blade). Once finished I ran some wood through and was suitably impressed. Properly set, the blade moves not at all, and the quality of the cut is excellent. Time after time. The parts are very well made and machined - no compromises anywhere. Of course, when I figured it out I spent nearly as much to enhance my 14" band saw as it would have cost to by an 18" saw in the first place. But that's another issue entirely. If you are trying to improve what you have, this kit is the way to go. If you're shopping for a new saw than the standard advice is buy the very biggest you can - it's cheaper in the long run.

3Fragile parts
By VanMan
The 3 star rating is not meant to reflect the usefulness of the product or the accuracy of the work one can perform with it. It is a reflection of the robustness of some key components. The stand is very sturdy as is the laminate coated table top and the actual aluminium fence. There are some weak areas. The phenolic insert accepts either of 2 reducing rings. These rings are held in place by screws which are threaded into very small, very fragile threaded holes in the phenolic insert. It is extremely easy to strip the threads in the phenolic insert by over-tightening. There is no positive "stop" when the screws are in far enough. Exercise extreme care when installing the reducing rings.More disappointingly, the aluminium assembly which attaches the fence to the levered glide (and the glide itself) which attaches to the guide on the side of the table are extremely fragile. The assembly is held to the levered glide by 4 machine screws with brass washers. I stripped the threads in the aluminium parts tightening one of those screws, using a hand screwdriver gripped by my fingers only (i.e. I did not grab the screwdriver with a "fist grip"). I'm a lawyer and I am not noted for my death grip. There are 2 nylon screws which take the slop out of the levered glide. When I assembled my table one went in perfectly while the other cross-threaded as it entered the second piece of metal. This is not the first tool I have had to assemble from a myriad of parts. It is, however, one of the most fragile. The fence is billed as being similar to a table saw fence. In my view, that is a bit of marketing hyperbole. The fence does have a locking lever at one end like a table saw fence. Engaging the lever does not, however, lock the fence perpendicular to the side of the table. There is a tall twist knob at the opposite end of the fence that you tighten after aligning the fence properly. It certainly isn't a bad system, just not as effective as a table saw fence.

5Excellent Router Table for the money!
By D. Vo
If you are a serious woodworker, this is by far THE best router table to buy. I bought the complete table, fence, stand, casters & micro-adjuster. Every little piece of hardware was accounted for and very neatly packaged. The reliability and accuracy of the fence make it very easy to use. And if you don't want to drill the insert yourself, for 3o bucks, Kreg will drill it for you, shipping included. The assembly instructions were written in simple, easy-to-understand English and not like the 'Chinglish' from other manufacturers who outsourced their products. This router table examplifies American ingenuity & workmanship. It's definitely a 5-star rating.

Sweet table! I'm not a master woodworker or great furniture maker, but this table is one of the greatest additions I've made to my shop in quite awhile. Smooth operation, easy to use and accurate. You won't be disappointed. The only item I'll add is a router lift.
