Poor quality control

Been using the Big Berkey for years with the ceramic filters. No problem but these looked like they filtered more and thus made that purchase.Well, they worked about one week and then they began leaking unfiltered water into the tank. They were just not doing the job. These can be tested by putting red dye in the water and it should filter it out. It was touch and go. Sent them back for another set. They did the same thing. This was over a year ago, so maybe they are better now but I wouldn't buy them again.What was really annoying is that I sold my set of ceramic filters after the purchase and had to at a loss buy them again. :-(I would expect better from British Berkefeld. We were filtering only tap water from the city. Not dangerous, only disgusting. These could risk your life if they were being used out in the field.

Dont Waste Your Money!!!!! Filters are defective

I ordered these as back up filters for a berkey system that I bought from the berkey sight. I put these on the shelf to use at a later date. I stared having issues(the base came unglued) with the filters that came with my system so I replaced them with my back up filters that I ordered from amazon. I didnt realize that the ones that came with the system were defective too.. I thought I miss handled them. I was wroung. ALL OF THEM ARE BROKEN TOO. I have sent emails to berkey directly and all Ive gotten back is if I order more they'll give me 25% off.I have responed with many emails pleading my case on how they should replace them and I have not heard from them since. ARE YOU KIDDING ME..I have spent hundreds on a system that has hardly worked. Not to mention that the bottom chamber started leaking at the spout 4 months after I bought it and the base cracked. (I bought the berkey light) I really wanted this...and Im Really upset with the company and they're poor customer service. Im not the only one..There are tons of forums all over the internet with people have the same issues with the filters falling apart, the leaking, the poor customer service, and dealing with the shock that this company has not issued a recall on the filters. There are people trusting that they are drinking CLEAN FILTERED water and they are in fact NOT...I should know Im one of them. If you have bought filters already I suggest doing a die test right out of the box and not trusting that they work and putting them in your back stock.

Massive quantities of filtered water

I'm a prepper, and have stocked a number of these as they're supposed to filter ecoli and so much else. I used two food buckets and bought my own spout to make make my own filter system (YouTube!) but make sure you have a lid and bucket bottom which fit very flat together or you may need more gaskets or sealant material.I use this in my home for any beverages, fishtanks, etc. Otherwise, my local water kills fis.

Best tasting filtered water!

Like a lot of folks, I struggled to get the spigot installed correctly without leaks, but the folks at 9G Health Foods (the reseller), sent me a PDF diagram that was much better than the original which made it clear how to assemble it correctly.The all stainless steel look is unobtrusive and attractive, but I do wish there was an external visual indicator of current water level.The flow rate through four filters is great. Our city water has a strong chlorine odor coming out of the tap, but the water on the other side of the filters is awesome.

My family use those filters since 2001. I think this is the best filters for my heavily mineralized well water. We use those filters in the Big Berkey body. I use only 2 filters at a time and this is enough for all our needs (and we drink a lot of water!) Top rating for this product!

Berkey Ceramic Water filters

I was so happy to get these filters for our old Aqua Rain water filtration system which is very similar to the Berkey. The price was much better than Aqua Rain. The filter are a nicer design with a complete ceramic head for faster filtering. The company sent them quickly and packaged them very well. I will definately buy more of these from this seller. I am very satisfied with the product and company.

For long term use, still the best water filter system

I recently purchased these to replace the filters I've had in my Travel Berkey since 2001, so this is a review of the British Berkefeld ceramic water filters over a long period of time. We've lived in multiple countries on several continents over the past 10+ years and used our Travel Berkey on a daily basis. We frequently cleaned the ceramic filters per the instructions. How frequently we needed to clean them depended on water quality and climate. The warmer the climate, the more often we needed to clean them. Over time, the constant cleaning visibly wore down the ceramic, but they lasted us ten years, which is an exceptionally long time for a water filter - and far beyond their stated life span from the manufacturer.So, yes, they are expensive, and they are fragile (if you drop them, they WILL break), but if you take care of them, I feel they are the most effective and economical water filters for long term use.

I thought Berkey was a quality brand...

Bought this about 3 months ago and was happy with the convenience of use. Out of the box the stainless steel containers had 3 minor dents - no big deal. Then a month ago, I noticed one of the four elements was defective as water was flowing out of it like a faucet while the other 3 were dripping along. Got a replacement element (actually they sent me two - I guess they knew I would have problems with at least one more since they come in pairs). I was told that there was a defective batch in which the glue was coming undone. Glue? Hmmm. Well, a month ago, I notice sediment (I get my water from a creek) in the 'filtered' water. I did the red food dye test and one of the elements clearly failed. Then I notice that in two others, the plastic base was coming unglued from the element. There was very sloppy glue work where the plastic was peeling off. And finally, I noticed that the threads on the plastic bolt and nut strips very easily. On initial installation of the elements, the threads hold nicely as you hand-tighten the nuts. But later when you unscrew them for a cleaning, and try to re-install them the plastic nuts just strip with moderate torque. On the first element, I thought it was my fault for over-torquing it. But this happened to all the elements. I work on carbon bike components so I know a thing or two about not over-torquing. This should not even be an issue - especially when Berkey emphasizes re-tightening the nuts when running the red food dye test. In fact, they recommend doing the dye test "upon first use then at six month intervals". First use? So much for quality control or quality confidence. Oh well, live and learn. I'm hoping I can get a full refund after 3 months since I have lost all confidence in this filtration system. We shall see...edit: The customer support at Berkeyfilters.com was very supportive and understanding. The defective batch of filter elements have been isolated and removed from circulation. They are accepting my return for a full refund. If/when they fix the issue with the stripping threads, then I would reconsider their product.

The Best

Hands down the best filter on the market. We love love love it! We live on a well that has the egg smell from hydrogen sulfide in the water and because of that we didn't drink our own water. We used to buy bottled water and now we love our own water! We purchased 10 heavy duty pcb free bottles and assigned certain colors to the everyone in the house and just refill them. We now drink 4 times as much water! I recommend you purchase the spout with the viewing window so you don't have to lift the top off to see how much water you have left. Can't say enough good!

Berkey? It's not.....

This filter is great! No question about it! High water pressure & thoroughly cleaned. No more dry skin or hair. I was a bit concerned about the unmarked filter & shower head. I emailed the vender and they indeed admitted it is a sprite brand. Which means berkey simply uses sprite filters (common practice in any business). My point...? Sprite filters are cheaper :(

Great product~

I have the berkey drinking water filter and wanted to try the shower filter. I am very happy with it. After my shower I could brush through my hair without any detangler and when it dried my hair was soft and not as corse like it usually is. My sister also has the shower filter and loves it. It helped with her hair and the kids'. When the kids take a shower after swimming it rinses all the chlorine out and she can brush throught their hair easy as of before she could not. She also said she shower doors are always clean and clear with no lime/ water spots. All together- its great!

Great piece! Quality constructed product.Covers a wide range of filtration and eliminates mold and fungus!The part where the silver band is around the center of the filter leaks slightly, but this may be due to installation. (Unfortunately I wasn't there when it was installed so I can't say for sure...lol)It's a great feeling to know that I'm not breathing in Chlorine vapors anymore when I shower (nor absorbing the toxic chlorine through my skin), and my hair is super shiny and soft since I started using it.It has a perfectly even flow of water and I find it very appealing to not have to frequently change or clean/sanitize my shower curtain :)Tall folk: Keep in mind this brings the traditional shower head down a couple of inches.

This device helped me survive the Christchurch quakes

Christchurch was recently rocked by a series of two major unrelated quakes. The Sep 4, 2010 7.1 quake did a lot of damage but the 6.3 of Feb 22, 2011 was much closer and shallower and destroyed most of the business district. My home was in the hardest hit Eastern suburbs along the Avon River. Since these quakes began we had almost 1700 aftershocks. My house is still standing although most of my neighbors are not. I had the foresight to buy a Berkey 8 months before the quakes began. My initial thought was that I did not need to store any water as I could take it from the river across the street to purify. But the day of the first quake all the water in the river disappeared and came up a liquefaction in the road and property. The only water left in the river was a white sludge which would have clogged any purifier. I was able to get some municipal water and use the Berkey to purify that. It has been in constant use since the quakes began. Although the city says the water is safe, several friends have reported strange infections they attribute to the water. So, I will continue to purify the water and have not had any of these problems. The water tastes wonderful and makes a drop at a time but fairly quickly. My only complaints are that the instructions were not clear how the washers on the tap go on (they are not symmetrical) so I had a few leaks the first time I used it. Also, the device is called "Berkey Light" so I assumed it was the model that has the LEDs built in to illuminate it at night; it does not. That model is called the Berkey Light LED. The use of the word Light is misleading. Now I wish I could have had the model with the LEDs as power was off for a considerable time. The device looks a bit top heavy and looks unstable but so far it has not fallen over in some large aftershocks. Maybe the company can invent a device to secure it. During the latest quake I didn't have water for over one month. This device is a lifesaver and I am purchasing extra filters for it just in case Planet X shows up one day in the future...

Have used one in Costa Rica for a year. Bought another for this year. The water comes through clean and pure. However, after 6 months, one of the water filter components came unglued from its base and we didn't have the proper glue to fix it.

Excellent for Drinking Water in the Home

February 2009: Works great and so much easier than bringing bottled water from the grocery. No need to stock up during hurricane season and no plastic bottles going into the recycling. Makes tea and coffee taste better. Got one for several family members and it takes away the off taste from water out in the country.Update April 2011: The Berkey Light continues to serve me very well. There was a slight glitch a couple of years ago when the upper container developed a crack in the bottom, parallel to the seam. The company replaced it quickly and without question. I only started using the 2nd filter a couple of months ago. So filtering approximately 10 gallons per week the original filter lasted 4+ years. One family member is still using the Berkey Light mainly to make better tasting tea. The other family member who received one as a gift no longer uses it, probably because of lack of space and the inconvenience.
