If you want better quality pictures with instant cameras, this is the one. There are professional instant cameras, but we want affordable ones. All instant cameras are easy to use and this one has a better lens, so picture will be almost clear, but not perfect.

If you can afford this one, buy it and don't look at the other instant film cameras that are cheaper. Quality is what you'll find instead of fun toys with fuzzy pictures.

5The Best of a Dying Breed
    By Michael J. Edelman
The era of Polaroid Photography seems to be nearing an end. With one-hour developing for conventional fold available right around the corner from most people, and the amazing advances in digital photography, it would seem that there's very little need for Polaroid's expensive system.

And yet the cameras hand on, and with good reason. Even the most automated of the digital systems still require you to connect your camera to a printer, while Polaroids just pop out beautiful photos as quickly as you can press the button.

I own a sack full of Nikons, a couple of digital cameras and a few point-and-shoot 35s, and yet I still find myself reaching occasionally for the Spectra. There are times when you need the ability to quickly produce an archival-quality color snapshot that digital or standard photography can't deliver. Selling something by mail? Take a snap and pop it in an envelope. Building or remodeling a house? Take snaps of the plumbing and wiring before you seal up a wall, and put them in an album. I did this in my home remodeling, and it was a lifesaver when I had to go back and drill into walls a week later. When it came time to install towel racks in the bath, there was no question as to where the studs were.

Sure, you can do a lot of those things with other camera, but nothing else gives you that immediate feedback AND and immediate archival copy. Shot not right? Do it again. No doubt in a few years we'll have digital systems that can pop out archival-quality hard copies right from the camera, but until then the Spectra is still the only choice.

    5Superb Photos
    By Kristi Swede
The Polaroid Spectra 1200si, using the bright Spectra film, produces superb photos in almost any circumstance. The camera focuses automatically, beeping if you are too close to your subject, and adjusts to various lighting conditions.

The timer feature is simple to use, giving off a very helpful insistent beeping as the picture is about to be taken - rather than taking a photo of you telling your family the camera's about to take a picture, it takes a photo of everyone paying attention to the beeping Spectra.

If all of this beeping is too much to bear, you can set the camera to a silent mode.

I use a variety of Polaroid and Minolta APS cameras for art and family photos. When I need a reliably good picture right away, I reach for the Spectra and am rarely disappointed. Polaroid, by the way, is an extremely responsive company with great technical assistance and customer service.

    4Blasphemous, But Worthwhile
    By Bill Cornell
I got my Simac 700 about 2 months ago and have used it about 10 times. I wanted to make pasta at home, but I wasn't about to try the hand-made approach favored by every Italian cookbook I've read. Authentic is okay, but not if it takes 2 pairs of hands and 3 hours...

My short-term verdict is that this is a terrific machine that makes noticeably better pasta than the dried variety. I was a tad intimidated at first with the kneading process (too wet? too dry?), but it's not brain surgery - I've only had one unrecoverable batch, and that was on a very humid night. The machine and its instructions are excellent. Can't vouch for egg-noodle pasta, as I've only tried the flour-and-water variety so far.

One little caveat - do NOT attempt to clean this machine immediately after use or you'll be a floury mess. Let it dry out overnight (or two) and you can easily get it back to cleanliness.

5You won't make boxed pasta anymore!!!!
    By Daniel F. Moore
Having read all of the reviews of the machine, it strikes me that people who have had trouble are probably not used to making things that require a level of attention. Making pasta is not like using a breadmaker. You can't just put all of the ingredients in the machine and walk away. Having used a CTC Pasta Express for years and being generally satisfied with it, I wasn't in the market for a machine as expensive as the Simac. But as an earlier reviewed observed, a large mail order company was selling it for 119 dollars including shipping. I decided to give it a try.The PastaMatic 700MX operates differently than most models. For one thing, you have to weigh your flour and carefully measure the egg mixture(I use Egg Beaters). It takes longer to knead than my CTC too.BUT...it makes the best pasta I have ever tried. The strands are much thinner than the CTC and a short dip in boiling water produces a superior pasta. I have purchased additional dies from Lello and look forward to trying them. The complaint about not being able to use 100% semolina is a recognition that that flour alone is just too dense and coarse for an extruder. No electric machine recommends using 100% semolina. But you can use a mixture of semolina and durum flour, which is a finer grind of semolina. As for the cleanup, I was expecting all kinds of problems but it really wasn't any more difficult than any other appliance. Let it sit for an hour or so and the remaining dough will harden and be much easier to remove. In short, I really like this machine! It takes time to make it work but that is time well spent.

    5Satisfied customer
    By J. Couture
My wife and I decided we wanted to make our own pasta. Step one was to see what was on the market and what others liked (and didn't). The Simac went to the top of the list very quickly. Step two, find the most reasonable price. Failing Amazon (dicont.) went to Ebay. Average price was $150 for a new or barely used machine with all the parts/manuals. So I tried my luck...no good, and I hate the outrageous shipping charges. Went to Google again and did a deeper search. Ah ha, a big name retailer had them in their clearance section for $119 (wow) with free shipping (FedEx home delivery no less). I ordered it on Tuesday night and it arrived on Friday afternoon...double wow. Due to the issues we read about below, we decided to RTFM first. However, we also decided to go with a recipe for tomato pasta from the recipe book.

After we washed all the parts, we assembled the ingredients. I happen to own a kitchen scale (I use it for my RC airplane hobby) so we used that method to measure out a lb of flour. We sifted it as directed and put in the other ingredients. Pushed the button, and added the water slowly as directed. The pasta was too wet so we added a tbs. of flour (as directed) and let it run 3 minutes more. We had to add about two more tbs. of flour to get it in the "walnut sized balls" stage. During this time, something strange happened that I'll describe at the end. Finally, we ran hot water over the die we wanted while extruding 2 "golf ball" sized lumps without the die in place (as directed). The pasta was "ragged" on the edges, but after the first foot or so it cleared right up. We just recycled it. The pasta (linguini) only took 45 seconds to cook. It tasted good, but I am now aching to try some semolina :)

The weirdness:We have GFCI plugs in the kitchen (as is code). After the first 10 minutes of kneading, the GFCI tripped? They should only trip if the HOT (120VAC) is connected to the ground. Very weird. It tripped both GFCI's. I didn't smell any burning so I moved the machine to a non-GFCI outlet to complete the process. Weird item number two: neither switch would turn off the machine? Hmmm, I'm an EE so I had an idea of how the machine is put together. The two switches are in series (if either opens then no current will flow) and most manufacturers switch the HOT side. When I opened the unit up, I saw that they were switching the neutral side. I also saw the problem. The HOT wire had become pinched between the case and the very hefty gearbox (metal BTW) and was shorting to ground. This completed the circuit to the motor so it would run but bypassed the switches too. I wire tied the offending wire out of harm's way and all is well. The motor on this machine is massive and I am positive that running it like that did no harm. After seeing the quality of the insides, I am also positive this machine will last a lifetime.

This collection is beautiful. I have only used "He Loves Me He Loves Me Not" so far but it went on beautifully and cured perfectly. I also styled it a little more by using the glitter gradient technique. It took a couple of days for the product to arrive but that was expected.

5Homemade Frozen Desserts Without The Fuss
    By sdh537
I love this frozen dessert maker. I have used it at least once every night since it arrived 2 weeks ago. It's so simple to make a delicious frozen dessert with this machine, just mix up your ingredients (or you can just turn on the "churn" switch and have this machine mix it) and pour it in. 30-40 minutes later your dessert will be frozen to perfection. The machine has a 60 minute timer which acts as a master on/off and two buttons, one to "churn" (mix) and the other to "chill". I often start it just before we begin our meal so we'll have a freshly made dessert when we're done. This machine does an excellent job of making frozen desserts. We've made perfect fresh lime, cantaloupe and blueberry sorbets as well as delicious smooth and creamy ice creams like Mocha, Chocolate and Honeydew Melon. Because this machine is so easy to use, it allows you to be creative, often, and without the fuss of ice, salt or prefrozen bowls. The 1-1/2 quart capacity is perfect for an average family, with some to spare, though for big parties you'd have to make more then one batch. Of course multiple batches are no problem with this machine and we've done 3-4 batches in a row more then a few times. Unfortunately since the bowl is not removable (the blades and cover are) you'll have to clean it out with a sponge and warm/soapy water between batches of different flavors. You will need to have a permanent space for it since it is heavy and not the type of appliance you'd want to move in and out of a cabinet. This machine is really beautiful too with its stainless steel body/blade and eye appealing curves, it occupies a prominent spot in our home and has been a conversation piece. I consider it a practical "luxury" appliance. This is a solid well built machine that should last a long time, my only concern is with the plastic cover, though it does seem sturdy enough. The plastic cover does however allow you to see your dessert while its being made, great for kids (and adults) anxious for dessert. If you or your family loves frozen desserts, this is the machine for you. I've been looking at it for awhile now, I'm so glad I decided to buy it.

5The king of home ice cream machines
    By R. Gilbert
Since you're reading this, you're probably wondering if it's worth the extra money compared to a lot of the other home machines on the market. I've had mine for five and a half years now, and I can tell you that this is the King, the Cadillac, the Ultimate home ice cream machine. It's absolutely worth the extra money, and I'd recommend it to anyone that's serious about their ice cream. You probably already know that this model has a built-in freezer, so you don't have to pre-freeze a bowl for 24 hours or so before making a batch of ice cream. It'll happily make back-to-back batches if you want, and the extra freezing power makes incredibly smooth ice cream. Every batch I've made has been on par with Ben & Jerry's, my favorite ice cream up until buying this machine.Unlike most other machines, everything is made of metal, including the dasher, so it feels extremely durable. It also has a large see-through plastic cover that you can lift off to have full access to the ingredients moving inside, which makes adding things like nuts, candy, chocolate pieces, etc. very easy, instead of having to funnel them down a tiny chute and not really being able to see how the freezing is progressing. One of the fun things about this machine is being able to stand over it and watch as the liquid starts transforming into ice cream. If you've read other reviews, you've probably heard people complain about a few things, so let me ease your mind:Weight - it's 44 pounds, which I have no problem lifting up onto the counter.Cleanup - because of the way it freezes, it uses a non-removable stainless steel bowl. Use a sponge with warm water, and you'll have it cleaned out in less than two minutes. It's a bit easier if you let the bowl warm back up to room temperature first, but if you're in a hurry to start another batch, you can do it right away also.Ice Cream Extraction - use the specially-designed plastic spoon that comes with it, and you'll have no problem getting it all out, even in the curves along the bottom of the bowl where the spoon fits perfectly. The description says it's a 1.5 quart machine, but use recipes that say they make 1 quart and it'll have a bit of room for the air that gets added.I store the ice cream in cardboard ice cream containers and then put them in the freezer for several hours to get the consistency of store-bought ice cream. (although several batches have been eaten right after coming out of the machine -- it makes a very stiff, soft-serve consistency) Quart-sized containers are here: 25ct White Quart Frozen Dessert Containers and pint sized here: 25ct White Pint Frozen Dessert ContainersI'd recommend starting with Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book. The sweet cream base is a good first recipe to try, since it's used in so many other recipes, and is delicious even on its own. Another good book to start with is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Homemade Ice Cream.Generally a batch takes about 30 minutes, and I usually shut off the machine when I hear it slowing down.If you're serious about ice cream, this is the one. I've even seen it on TV a couple of times when they talk about high quality machines and ice cream classes.Update: Dec. 31, 2012 - After five and a half years, the machine finally started taking longer to chill the bowl. I called an appliance repair company and they sent someone over to add more Freon to it. Now it's back to chilling in about 5 minutes, and good as new. While he had the machine open, he pointed out that it has a direct drive motor and fan, with no belts. It also has a clutch on the motor, so in theory you should be able to run it until the ice cream gets hard enough to stop the motor, without hurting it. Great, high-quality machine!

    4Solid
    By Eric Scott
I spent two years, and graduated from culinary school on a whim (let's not go into that).

I had an opportunity to use quite a few machines in pastry class. This is one of the better ones. It's at the edge of being a pro tool, but it's capacity is too small to qualify for that, and the freezer unit is slow for a pro unit, (which will encourage ice crystal formation).

On the other hand, it's a capable machine, and a huge step up from cheaper machines in terms of build and performance. It's quiet, strong, and so far, very reliable.

If you are simply experimenting with ice cream making, this isn't the machine, probably (because of the price).

If you do like ice cream enough to plunk down half a grand, it's the best one I've used under [$$$$]. For [$$$$] you'll double the capacity and freeze cream in about 8 or 10 minutes.

It's not too hard to clean, and is easy on power consumption (sometimes we take the machine on picnics and use a generator to power the unit). I'm satisfied with the performance, quality and product produced to say I fully recommend it to ice cream loving families who know how truly great fresh ice cream is.

    5Throw your CD changer away!
    By A Customer
I recently purchased this DVD-changer, and I'm thrilled with it. There are more than enough features to keep you busy, and it's a very good looking unit. But what's most important here is that the video and audio are INCREDIBLE! Really, you can't go wrong, especially for the price. The remote isn't any worse than most out there these days. Unless you spend big $$$, they always give you a cheap remote. But I'm notoriously picky about video equipment, and the Pioneer has exceeded my expectations.

Brief highlights include: Built-in digital decoder with outputs for coax and optical, as well as six analog outs. Component, s-video, and composite video outputs. User-friendly menu system with graphical on-screen interface. Picture adjustment for regular, cinema, or animation (cinema is stunning). Beautiful color and clarity. Fast access to layer-switches, and scene changes. Onboard memory for retaining setup options of 15 DVDs (very handy), and the unit will remember where you stopped viewing up to 5 discs if you can't finish a movie.

The only thing missing is a zoom feature, but believe me, you'll never miss it.

All in all, a superb player. If you're looking to get into DVD and would like to preserve some rack space, toss your CD-changer out the window and buy this thing!

5Are you making home Video CDs? Buy this unit!
    By Colorful Years
Nowadays, more and more computer companies are producing computers with the video editing and production functions. Sony, Dell, Compaq and iMac AVs are examples of these machines that come with video editing components and a CD burner for you to burn your own movie, or, Video CD on a CD. However, unlike people in China or Japan, where video cd players are more popular than DVD players, people in the US will soon find that their home DVD players are not able to play video CDs. Some of the units will be able to play Video CDs encoded using the version 1 standards, but not able to play VCD version 2 or 3 standards. Other DVD units simply do not accept Video CDs recorded on a CD-R. This Pioneer is one of the Pioneer DVD families that fully accept a "home-made" video cd. This makes sharing your vocation CD with your grandma's family on her big screen TV and home theater possible. Another beautiful function of this unit is that you may stop at anytime while you're watching a movie. When you come back, it will start right from where you stopped. Most DVD units require that you either use fast forward or scene selection to jump to where you left, which requires more steps on your remote.

I love my pioneer dvc302d dvd player. The picture and sound quality issuperb. The looks of it are also very nice. The only drawback from aperfect 5 star product was the forward and reverse scanning feature. Instead of having both a quick moving, smooth search/scan and fast scan,it only has a fast scan which tends to overpass a section one may be searching for. I am a big fan of new technologies and the price for this product is just right. The three disc tray is also great...not too many as a 5 disc and definatley better than one.Just be careful not to stare too long at the little blue light. Its aura is hypnotizing. just as a reminder, pioneer was the first to have it. Now the other companies are copying it. Pioneer was also the first in laser video. You cant go wrong here.

    5Great Product
    By SC2013
Just received my winterflush kit in the mail this past week and am extremely content with the product. The skirt and interlocking pipe were simple to assemble and connected to my motor without any issues. Easy assembly and quick breakdown all into the bucket really makes it easy for putting away during the season. Also this shipped surprisingly fast! Would recommend to fellow boaters

    5SUPERB FEATURES AND QUALITY
    By BURT KRITT
I first purchased a Toshiba 3109 and then a Panasonic 220. Both units had typical dvd sound and picture quality and were fairly easy to use. But some of the features that I wanted were either missing or difficult to use. Also, I am very lazy, and when I had an occaisonal whim to see a portion of of a movie that was not already loaded, I usually did not bother. The Pioneer more than satisfied any disatisfaction that I had with the other players. With 300 + 1 discs available, a quick touch of the shuttle made any disc immediately available. The display menues are incredibly versatile and easy to use compared to other DVD players. And finally the picture was equal to the others, but the sound quality was MUCH, MUCH SUPERIOR. The price may be higher, but dollar for disc and overall quality and features make purchasing this Pioneer DVD a no brainer.

    3Fun, but needs more polish
    By Charles Oppermann
This is a nice changer with some interesting features, but the user interfaces is lacking.

Pros: The "Best" feature allows you to save a chapter to a last-in, first-out list. Press the "Best" button the remote to save the current chapter. When not playing, pressing "Best" plays back the chapters saved. Great for storing those awesome scenes. Pressing next chapter takes you to the next saved disk/chapter.

Digital Noise Reduction. Very nice and highly customizable for those DVD's with lousy transfers.

Single-Loader: Easy to pop in a rental DVD and play.

Cons: Size of Title/Artist fields are tiny and very difficult to fit text into.

    Difficult to create play lists

Only displays title on unit display - which is horrible when looking for a CD named "Greatest Hits" and you have several stored in the unit.

Over all a good unit, but comparsion shop and see if there are better user interfaces available. I have no qualms about the display or audio quality.

    5Pioneer DV-F727 301-Disc DVD Changer
    By L. Hickman
I purchased both the Sony DVPCX995V and the Pioneer and compared them side by side. I took the Sony back and kept the Pionneer. This was to simplify the kids life (load all their DVD's and not have to worry about finger prints, scratches etc). The menu is fast and easy and compared the Sony, this thing quickly rotates the the chosen disc. Having to constantly re-enter titles on the Sony was what did it in for me. I haven't had any issues at all with the Pioneer. Remembers all the disc titles even when I am shuffling the discs around for better organization. Well worth the money!Pros: Quick and easy menu, remembers DVD titles, quick searching for DVD titles.Cons: Only enter 12 characters for titles, no HDMI, or other High Def output.

4terrific service but the coat size was much larger than expected
    By Michael Morgan
Terrific service from Amazon and the original vendor. The coat size was way larger than expected. I'm purchasing from Australia so this may be a variation between countries. However, the returns policy was excellent. I had no problems sending it back.

    5Love this DVD player!
    By A Customer
I own this DVD player and it works beautifully! In response to the previous review with the remote problem, the unit will not accept fuctions at certain times. I was concerned, so I read my instruction manual to determine the problem. It seems that some DVD's will not allow you to perform certain functions. For instance, it might not allow you to fast forward through movie previews. That is not a problem with the XVM555BK, it is built in on the DVD to make you watch them. An easy way to avoid this is to press stop and then just start the movie. As far as movie viewing and sound quality, the unit is AMAZING! I recommend it highly! I listen to CD's on it rather than my old CD player. The convenience of 3 discs is good and the sound quality is great. I was also amazed at the price, less than some single disc DVD players. Thank you Amazon.com! I have really enjoyed the unit!

    5Great player for the price.
    By A Customer
This is my second DVD player and I am very happy with it. I have owned it since December of 99 and had no problems at all. Problematic DVDs such as The Matrix, Arlington Road and ID4 have all played flawlessly, which cannot be said for many more expensive players. Having 3 trays instead of just 1 is a major advantage to this player in my opinion. If you like to watch bits and pieces of your DVD collection here and there, this is really the selling point of this player, since obviously, it is nice not to have to get up to change DVDs. Overall, I am totally happy with my purchase.

    5Great Features -- Great Price
    By R Maginn
This was an absolutely great purchase. As far as I'm concerned it can go head-to-head with any of the more expensive models. As the author of the June 30, 2000 review notes, it handles many of the "problematic" titles with a breeze. This is truly a great machine. Another great JVC product. A company, which in my opinion, is leading the market!

    2fell apart after 7 months
    By Charlotte
JUNE 13 UPDATE: I bought this chair 7 months ago. Today it broke into pieces when I got up. The screws fit into plastic joints is the basic problem. If you buy this chair, don't expect it to last.Overall I like this chair, which I got to try out as a tall person's task chair for someone with back issues. Since the chair is a somewhat interesting and unusual design I will talk in detail about the ergonomics of this chair which apply to me and may not apply to others of different sizes or uses. The seat is plastic but the shape is fairly comfortable and I don't have to worry about the padding wearing out and then sitting against the sharp edge of particle board like my old chair. The front left and right edge do pinch a bit when my feet are not on the foot rest, I'm not able to splay feet out to balance myself very well because of these edges. So I have to sort of put my legs over the edgy part of the front and it does cut off circulation on the bottom of the thigh when sitting like this. I think it is for someone with a more narrow frame. The butt size is fine for me (I'm not fat), but a wider seat front or without the ridges on the sides would work better. The back rest seems fine. It's not something I will use much since I am not using this as a recliner, but it works fine to stop you from falling off the chair, but to be that far back your butt is going to be pressing against the two metal bars. I expect I will be normally sitting more forward in it normally.I wanted skids instead of casters because all the casters nowadays break apart after a year. The skids though are on a bolt attached via a nut that is welded to somewhat thin tubular metal flared at the end. We'll see how that works out in a year, the issue is really the angle of attachment of these things that causes fracturing through the leverage. Someday someone will address caster attachment issues on chairs and figure out how it was done in the old days before all the caster attachments started failing on every (Chinese made) chair in the world. So with the skids they might last longer than casters but I'm not totally sure yet.The big problem is the footrest is not adjustable, it sits on top of a ridge that is where there is a change in diameter in the pneumatic canister. The only height where the foot ring works for me is when fully extended. The big problem here is that foot ring height is extremely dependent on a person's height, leg length, and chair elevation. So it should always be adjustable, it's a big over sight that it is not. Full height though is too tall for what I need, but if I was at a kitchen counter it would probably work OK. Instead I'm at my drafting desk.In the lowest position the height is 22-23". 22" at the base of the seat, 23" at the top since it is curvy. This is in accordance with the specifications which I should have read more closely since I really prefer a base position of 21", but that is my fault for not paying more attention. In the 22" lowest position, the foot rest would only be at a good height for a pretty short person. So in this position I need to touch the floor with my toes instead otherwise the angle between my legs and spine gets to be too acute which is a posture problem leading to back pain. My goal with getting drafting task chairs and having a higher work surface is to be able to keep this angle obtuse (greater than 90°) so that I avoid back pain. If the angle is acute there is a problem. Being at a higher position is what enables the obtuse angle, especially when leaning forward. You'll be amazed at how small the box is that this comes in. Because the seat is not padded they are able to fit everything in very closely in a box that you might think is just the seat only.Overall I am not dissatisfied, though I think the chair would be better the foot ring should be adjustable, the lowest position just 1" lower, and the front of the seat widened, even an inch would help, but maybe a required size of the box was the constraining factor since the seat is what determines the size of the box. Take this in the context of the fact that 100% of office store chairs do not work for me at all and so this chair for me is better than all of those. I tend to shift and do different sitting positions during the day. On this one I can perch on the front edge of the seat, something not possible on most office store chairs where I'd just slip off doing this. I think though I am going to get a second drafting chair and switch between them every few days.

3No frills high seat bar stool
    By Ian Bowles
I bought this to use while I use my computer which sits on my breakfast bar. This is about one of the cheapest bar stools around for a reason. I gave it three stars because its not bad enough to be a two but not really a 3. more like 6.5/10Remember those hard plastic chairs they had in school? Well this basically one of those with a push up cylinder and a foot rest. The seat is firm and hard. The minimal back-rest sits low and is not all that comfortable to rest your back against. Again for the price, compared to other bar stools I wasn't expecting a lot.The cylinder, my main concern when purchasing this, seems good enough. It loses maybe a half inch when I sit my 5'11'' 175lb frame down but otherwise seems sturdy. It takes only about 5 - 10 minutes to put together out of the box and includes the only tool you will need to do it.This bar stool has good looks if you prefer a more modern feel. It will probably fit in if you like Ikea or Design Within Reach. Probably would stick out in more conservative decor. This bar stool is cheap for a reason but I could not find anything comparative in the price range. So if you need something economical and modern looking I can recommend it. If you have the dough I would suggest finding something with a higher, padded back rest.

    5Sleek and functional!
    By S. Jeffrey
Wasn't sure that it would be sturdy but this thing has stood up to the twirlings of my 5year old cousins...the weight of my 6'5" 240lb cousin and daily use by me. I wished the back support was a little higher as it only rests around my lower back but other than that I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
