Ok, so let's compare this to Carhartt...

Right off the top I am going to say that this is the first Berne jacket that I have ever purchased and I am comparing it to my last two Carhartt Sandstone Active Jackets and I am going so say it is almost like comparing apples to oranges. A few things that I notices about the Berne that differentiate it from the Carhartt was that even though both brands that I purchased are the same size, the Berne is a much more slim cut. The sleeves are tighter and the coat up front is less baggy, and less ideal if you are the type of person that likes to layer to stay warm. Both sets of zippers are heavy duty and in my opinion, the Berne zipper matches the Carhartt in apparent ruggedness. The waist and sleeve strech ribbing in the Berne is tighter and is very similar to Carhartt but seems to stretch back to its original length when you take the coat off, whereas my Carhartt sandstones (and just for the record I do not layer underneath them) would stretch out in the waste and would stay streched out. The Berne overall feels lighter but the outside canvas and quilted inside feel almost identical to the Carhartt. The hood fit is nearly identical and like I said, other than the Carhartt being a larger jacket overall (all of mine are XLT's) you are also getting more physical coat for the money by purchasing a Carhartt. Both of my Carhartt sandstones are over 5 years old and only get used as an outdoor coat for casual use (nothing outdoor work related) and still look like new. The sandstone ages nicely. I have only owned my Berne for two weeks but have worn it daily and I like the slimmer cut and lighter feel of it. It is less bulky overall than the Carhartt (not that I'm saying anything bad about Carhartt). Warmth wise, I've worn the Berne outdoors in 20 degree temperatures as I walk to my job in the mornings (4 blocks away) and it feels a bit cooler than the Carhartt. Again, it could be the tighter fit or just a bit less insulation and that doesn't bother me for the price I payed. Ah yes, the price. I purchased my coat on sale at a local Orschelen (kinda like TSC or Tractor Supply Company) for $41 out the door. The original retail on the coat is $60 or so. My previous 2 Carhartts were purchased on Amazon in the spring for less than $70 on sale/clearance. I do know that the Carhartt sandstone active jacket, when not on sale, in larger sizes can retail for close to $90, so you make the call.If you want a lighter jacket that will keep you warm (but not too warm) three seasons out of the year, buy this Berne. If you work outdoors and need to stay warm, and can layer accordingly, spend the extra $50-$60 and get the Carhartt. I love and support both brands. I will say that Carhartt does stand behind their products and recently starting manufacturing their sandstone active jackets in the USA again so let's hope they keep it that way. I didn't see any warranty information on my Berne but they are not exactly a new company, so I would imagine that a call to customer service would be productive if I had a problem. At this point I would say your budget and work demand might dictate which coat you go with but I feel like I've pretty much laid it out for you here. If you want a lighter jacket and layering isn't too important, the Berne jacket is a perfectly fine way to go.
