4Awsome sander, but...
By B. Blazer
I just got this sander, and have been able to use it on some red oak. By far this is the best ROS I have ever used - and I have many hours logged with ROS. This sander can be very aggressive, but it is very easy to control, and gives very precise action. I put most of my 220 lbs. on it and it didn't chock for a second. There was almost no vibration, and my hands did not tingle after a few hours of use. Also, I have never seen better dust extraction. PERIOD!

Now to why it did not get 5 stars from me.

1) No case. At this price you think you would get a case.2) Poor doccumentation. Mine came with two manuals. Both were safety oriented, and not use or operation oriented.3) The dust collection outlet is propietary. It is an odd shaped rectange, forcing you to use a hard to find Fein adapter, or make one yourself.4) Cost.

However, because of the preformance of this unit, I mostly have been able to overlook these problems. I am thinking of buying their 8" model next.

5This is Amazing!
By Matthew Schenker
If you do woodworking, you know that sanding is the most dreadful part of any project. Sanding is usually a dirty, dusty, and unhealthy job. When my last random-orbit sander got worn out, I replaced it with the 6" Fein MSF636-1. I also bought the Fein Turbo II dust collector to go with it. I am so impressed, I just had to sing its praises...

I have been through several random-orbit sanders -- DeWalt, two from Bosch, Makita, Porter+Cable, and others. Always, when I'm done sanding, my hair and face, and all surfaces in the shop, are covered in dust. For days afterwards, I have to vacuum up the dust. The dust flies around, the dust is all over my work clothes, the dust makes its way from my shop into the house. It is dirty and it is unhealthy -- it is very dangerous to breathe fine dust particles.

When I bought this sander, I figured that "dust free" meant less dust. I thought it would just be an improvement over my other sanders. Not so! With this sander, dust free really means dust free. With the Fein sander, attached to the Fein Turbo II dust collector, there is absolutely no dust in the air at all! I have a bright shop light right over my sanding table, and after I am done sanding I cannot see anything floating around in there. Definitely close to 100% dust collection.

The Fein sander is an aggressive machine, and at first you might be surprised at how much material it removes in a short time. There is an adjustment period when switching to this machine from other ROS, but it is a nice thing to adjust to. Also, I should say that this is a heavy machine, definitely heavier than other ROS I've used. But it does a beautiful job. I've used it on grits from 40 up to 400, and it is easy to control and very well balanced.

One definite minus is that Fein includes no instructions. I know that a sander is a pretty simple machine, but there are a couple of items in the box that didn't make sense to me right away, and it's nice to have instructions to make you feel confident you're doing things correctly.

The bottom line is, I no longer dread sanding. I actually look forward to the sanding phase of my wood projects now.

2Fein compared to the Festool 6" Rotex RO 150
By Rand T. Frantz
If you have been using cheap orbital sanders, the Fein will be a big improvement. For about four years, I have been using the Festool 6" Rotex 150 but it goes through motor brushes about every year. So, I thought a change was in order. I bought the Fein sander hoping not only to solve the motor brush problem but maybe improve over the Festool. There is absolutely no comparison. The Festool is a far better sander. Controling the Fein is difficult at best. When sanding narrow pieces like a cabinet face frame, the Fein jumps around. When sanding larger areas, the Fein sucks down onto the work piece making it more difficult to move. Long periods of sanding with the Fein are a struggle. The Fein is aggresive but, when you want less agressive sanding, you don't have a choice since it is only one speed not variable. I am especially disappointed in the amount of vibration the Fein has. The worse thing of all is the poor quality when sanding with high grit paper for the final pass. One other downer is the high cost and lack of availability of sand paper for the Fein. And if all that isn't enough, I emailed Fein regarding problems trying to register my sander online for the extra 2 year warranty. I never heard from them. By the way, I spoke with a Fein representative prior to buying the sander and told him I already have a Festool. He said Fein is the best. So much for honest salesmanship. If you don't want the above problems, go with Festool. The motor brush problem is the only down side and that might just be a problem with the one I have. Other people have told me they have never changed motor brushes in their Festool sander. The price is about the same on both sanders.

5Fein Sander vs Bosch 3727DVS.
By Bob Feeser
At the risk of being the odd man out. I just came from the WoodWorks2002 show at the Ft Washington PA Center. Top names were there demonstrating, as well as vendors with their wares. Fortunately the Fein sander vac combination, with all of the Fein sanders were there to use. The rep attached each of the sanders to the latest Turbo III vac. As an owner of a Bosch 3727DVS 6" sander, which is twice the money of their regular line, but less than half the cost of the Fein, I noticed that the Fein models, had vibration delivered to your hands. I had so so feelings about the Bosch sander, but after using the Fein, I must admit, I am now a lot fonder of my Bosch. The Fein did remove the material rapidly from the stock. I thought the Bosch removed material quickly also. Without a side by side comparison, it would be tough to tell any differences. The only problem with the Fein is the vibration would give me discomfort after using it for awhile. I know this sounds unbelievable after reading the other reviews that state they did not have a problem with vibration, even after hours of use. The vibration next to the Bosch model was substantial in comparison. It was that way with both of the Fein sanding models. He did not hook up the air driven model, stating it was the same as the electric, and did not have a compressor to feed it. The odd thing is that I was talking to someone else at the store that had a Fein sanding system, and he mentioned the vibration to me. I did not prompt him for that information. A conversation broke out near a router station, and it drifted into sanders. He said, "I have the Fein sander, and the vibration is a problem." I immediately responded that I noticed the same thing.I own a Fein RT-1800 router, see my review, "Simply put, this is the very best", and I also have the Fein Multimaster, with their pro cut, and extra individual blades, and loads of sandpaper boxes. I love the Fein quality. The dust capturing feature is something that the Bosch has also. Holes in the bottom of the sanding pad and paper, allow the vacuum to suck up the dust. Fein advertises that it picks up 99 percent of the dust. A small amount of dust that is generated at the edges of the disc, escape the draw of the vacuum. The Bosch does the same thing. The Fein Turbo vac is a very nice unit. It doesn't complain when the air flow is limited. It has an independent cooling air flow. I use a Sears 6 1/4 HP model that is designed for a ton of airflow. Hooking it up to the small flow of the sander, is like trying to breathe through a straw. What I did was to hook up the 2 1/2" airline to the outlet, which is smaller. I let it leak. The extra air that is released around the outside of the inlet nozzle, successfully draws that 1% of dust that escapes the edges of the pad. Wahlah, complete dust capture. Noisy in comparison, but complete. The Fein turbo vac has the advantage of being super quiet, auto run when you start the sander (the sander plugs into an outlet on the vac, so it knows when it turns on) and is designed specifically for the flow levels of sanding.I know I will receive a lot of flak stating that it vibrates, especially since the other reviewers are obviously professionals, and did not notice a problem with that. I did not use it for a long period of time, but the vibration was very noticeable. The Bosch 6" is substantially smoother. The other thing worth mentioning is that the 8" Fein had a tendency to dance across the wood, when riding flat, whereas the smaller model gave you a more stable ride. It is capable of hovering without pulling you erratically. Either sander you could ever so lightly tilt to one edge, minutely off of plane, and get a stable ride, but then you are doing more digging. The perfectly flat ride, will not dig, and gives you the maximum work surface at one time. So the smaller model gives you more of the advantage of a flat sheet sander, than the 8" model does. The Bosch 6" gives you that kind of stability at all speeds. Maybe their is something inherent in the 6" disc that makes for a more stable ride.I must admit the Fein cut a lot of material very quickly. The package is very quiet. I know from my other Fein equipment that it is built to last. For those reasons, I gave it 5 stars.I'm overly sensitive to vibration, because I was using an inexpensive vibrating sander, that gave me throbbing fingers after 20 minutes of use. The Bosch was a dream in comparison, so when I did a hands on with the Fein, I was surprised. It was a lot better than the vibrating sander, but not as smooth as the Bosch. If you do a decent amount of sanding, and have a hard time scuffing up the cash for the Fein unit, check out the Bosch 3727DVS. It's twice the money of the standard Bosch line, but is an impressive unit. Hope this helps.

5The best sanding system ever
By A Customer
This FEIN system is by far the most effective of any of its competitors. This system is for anyone who is a serious woodworker. The price is higher than the competition, but in the end, well worth the investment. It has saved myself and my employees valuable time in the field. I would strongly recommend this system to anyone who wants a superior finish and real dust containment.

5Amazing!
By A Customer
I don't personally own this system, but I used to work in a boat shop that had it and I can safely say that it stands out head and shoulders above anything else I have used. I'm supprised that more people aren't aware of the benefits of having the vacuum attached to the sander. It keeps your abrasive clear, so that you aren't just sanding dust. Your pads don't load up and they stay sharper longer and so the work proceeds much faster! To me it was like having the aggressive stock removal of a belt sander with the finesse of a pad sander. The vacuum is fairly quiet and the switch is a nice feature. It comes on when you turn on the tool and off after you turn it off. While this is a more expensive set up, it is easily worth it for both the health benefits and the increased productivity. If you do much sanding, I suspect that it will easily pay for itself over time. I own a Porter Cable for now. It is a good machine for the money and I like it, but I have used one of these and I know what the good stuff is.

5The Rolls Royce of Orbital polishers
By Sam
So you can go and buy a $75 Home Depot brand... or a $150 Makita at a "pro" tools place... and you'll have a usable, or at best good polisher. Or you can go all out and get one that's going to last long enough for your grand children to use in 2100... This German made, 100% variable speed orbital polisher with a standard 5/8-11 mount is the most robustly made, easy to use polisher I've ever had the pleasure of using. I will not lend this one out, where as my Makita is now sitting at a neighbor's house and I couldn't care less.It normally sells for around $600, but the street price is about 20% off, and well worth it.

1This sprayer does a pretty rough job
By P. MSakamoto
I purchased the CH HVLP sprayer as an alternative to a compressor plus gun setup for spraying clear finishes as well as interior trim paint. The previous CH products that I had purchased had been great. This one has been a great disappointment.

First, the transfer of material to the surface being painted appears to be about as inefficient as a normal high pressure sprayer. This is especially true when spraying higher viscosity coatings that require more airflow in order to move them. The second issue is the fineness of the spray pattern. This unit produces a pretty rough and uneven pattern compared with other units. The air supply hose is a real handicap as it is not only too stiff for easy use, but it has a really nasty chemical smell that just doesn't go away.

Summary, I have a CH compressor, an airless sprayer and this HVLP. I can reccommend the first two without hesitation. This last is just not worth it. Get a Fuji, Apollo or perhaps the top of the line Wagner. They are all $500 or more, but at least they do the job.

5This thing is great!
By Michael J. Murphy
I am so impressed with this product and I too am surprised by the not so great reviews. I have a feeling that the people who don't like this product are people who have significant experience with other paint sprayers . . . People who like to thin the paint, tweak knobs, make adjustments, etc., etc., etc. This is a ($) paint sprayer. . . it doesn't have a lot of knobs and whistles and probably isn't very forgiving in some respects (compared to ($) paint sprayers).

This was my first time ever using a paint sprayer. I read through the manual, (especially the part where it specifically says to not mess with anything), poured in the paint . . . and I was off spraying (I didn't need to thin the paint!). There is only one knob to adjust the volume of paint that is coming out . . that's all that I needed. It worked great and the finish is smooth and even (I painted my veneer kitchen cabinets using a BIN primer and an Alkyd based semi-gloss).

This is the perfect paint sprayer for the do it yourselfer. Just RTFM and don't mess with anything. Also, pick paints that don't require thinning (the one's I used specifically stated that you shouldn't thin it . . . RTFM)

1Don't buy this product
By D. Obenland
I own this sprayer and it is not woth the money. You cannot get a fine spray pattern from this unit. The air cap is poorly machined and the turbine does not supply enough CFM. Spend more money and get an Accuspray system.

5Smooth cut; a quality blade
By A Customer
I've purchsed Freud blades for my contractors TS before and have been very pleased, so I decided to buy their dado. The quality of this blade is excellent! The case which holds the outter blades, chippers, and shims is a thin plastic but firm foam lines the inside to keep everything supported and in-place. The blades and chippers are kept separated, while they're in the case, by a dimped plastic disks; they seem to do a decent job. As for the cut - smooth and glasslike on both the sides and bottom!! The only thing that bothers me is that the chippers are not labeled. To choose which configuation of chippers for a particular thinkness requires you to mic them.

It cleanly and easily cuts through oak to particle board. No chipping or tear out.

The only improvement to this dado blade would be to stamp the chipper with its thickness. Otherwise it is a very good purchase.

5Best dado set I own
By John R Malmquist
Having two dado sets already, I was frustrated that I couldn't get a chip-free cut in oak plywood. Even though I felt that the $154 price of this set was steep, I decided to try it. What a pleasure! I only have one suggestion: color code the shim stock so that quick placement is possoble. As it is now, you have to mic each shim to get what you want. I used some nail polish to color-code each one, but Freud could do us all a favor and identify each different size when the product is made. I would certainly recommend this dado set to anyone-beginner or experienced!

4Very sharp grooves
By A Customer
I just bought this dado set and used it to mill about 15 1/2" dados in red oak. At first I had to check to make sure I was cutting. This set is almost as smooth as my Forrest WWII! The dados were very sharp with perfectly flat bottoms. No shims were required. Although a lot of money, I think it is well worth it. Better to buy a great product once than a poor one first.

My only complaint is that the shims are not coded in any way. Would be nice to see some color coding for thickness. If not for that, this product would get 5 stars.

3Warning - check saw compatibility before purchase
By Pope John
Thanks to the other review guy for pointing this out. This product was rated top tool by Wood magazine, so I was ready to buy, but it won't fit my saw. I have an old Craftsman. Go the the Freud website for the directions on compatibility [...]. The blade requires at least 1-3/32" arbor length for a 3/4" dado. Mine was less then an inch after subtracting the arbor nut width.

5Great tool
By Bruce W. Thompson, Inc.
Dado setup has never been easier. No spacers or shims needed to get the exact desired width of cut, just dial more or less width in .004" increments.A handy chart tells how many rakers and dial "clicks" are required for a range of cut widths. The case keeps all parts neatly stowed.I got the 6" version for use in an under-powered (1.5HP) table saw. If your saw is beefier, the 8" version would enable you to cut deeper dadoes.

3Nice product-poor documentation
By J. Langevin
Unfortunately I had to return it as it did not work with the Ridgid T2424 tablesaw. The arbor bolt is too short and housing interferes with 3 small bolts on the outside dado blade (opposite of dial blade). Talking with the Freud representatives, it doesn't sound like it works with Craftsman either but you should double-check to be sure before buying like I did. Duh!Documentation is unclear and inaccurate. Luckily there is an 800 number and person I talked to was friendly. Dado blade didn't work on his tablesaw either! Make sure you have a good tablesaw... ha ha.

5Weekend Woodworker... Perfectly Happy
By D. Thiel
I used these blades on a 1hp, 3450rpm Craftsman tablesaw. I am pretty experienced at rough carpentry and am just now getting into finer woodworking.First of all... these reviews include many people complaining about how difficult it is to put the shims on and off... I dunno, I'm a VERY impatient person, but I found the 5 seconds it takes to add/remove a shim worthwhile. Also, some folks had said that the measurements are "nominal" and not actual... who knows? Bottom line is that you need to do a test with scrap wood to make sure you have exactly what width you want... (and doing a test with scrap wood is a good woodworking practice and a good habit to form.)In the "box": the outer blades, chippers, shims, and a case/rack which holds it all quite well. (Note, most other sets in this price range don't come with shims.) Freud includes instructions which are pretty straightforward, but again you should run scrap because every bit of wood is different -- not to mention that humidity can affect the thickness of your stock.I find this set to be excellent and well priced. Couldn't be happier. Easy to use, well packaged in a carryall/case.Worked so well my wife thought Norm had dropped by to help me.-----EDIT: I've now had this set for years and have since upgraded nearly ALL my tools, including the purchase of a cabinet saw. I still feel no need to upgrade this dado set. Works great and gives nice flat dados.

4Nice Blade
By allen twiford
I just put this through the paces rabbeting (yes that's how it's really spelled) several drawers I installed under the bed (much to my wife's delight). Very accurate and well made blades. One word of advice: the blades and wing chippers cut 1/32" light of their stated width. I think this is because plywood is is 1/32" light of its nominal thickness, ie 1/2" plywood is actually 15/32". So this is actually a good thing for cutting grooves for plywood. To actually get 1/2" thickness, add two of the shims supplied with the blade. The nly reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that the directions don't give you this handy tidbit, I figured it out with a test cut and some research.

5Looks flat to me!!
By Karl Zemlin
Just picked up one of these blades. The old Craftsman stack I inherited from my Grandfather just isn't up to the requirements of my next project.

I read the previous reviews as part of my decision making process. I am a mechanical engineer, machine designer, and a machinist. The review that complained about the lack of flatness was a real concern to me. Precision is very high on my list of priorities.

After the first few cuts with the new Dado I felt compelled to run to my computer (I'm covered with saw dust!!) and add my two bits to the list.

I am completely satisfied with the cut quality of this dado. The cuts are smooth, very flat, and clean. I have not measured/checked the accuracy of the width. I will use the included spacers to tune the width of any slot I cut. I don't expect the stack height to be precise. This one's a keeper!
