5Clean and sharp dados
By Alan L. Wieskamp
I've run this dado set through just about every material there is and it produces sharp sidewalls and flat bottoms every time. The blades run true and with about 150 lineal feet of material run through, the teeth are still sharp. Just remember to clean the resin or glue residue from the cavity behind each tooth as it builds up easily and starts to burn the work piece. I have a Jet contractor's saw with the 1.5 hp motor. The dado insert you can order from Jet will only accomodate a 6" dado set. You will have to use a zero clearance insert to make your own, otherwise you can use the metal one from Jet and limit the depth of cut to about 1 1/4". Kind of defeats the purpose of the 8" blade. Also these blades are heavy and if you use the entire stack, the 1.5 hp motor does not have enough power to cut a dado to more than 3/4". You will have to make more than one pass to cut one deeper effectively.

5Great performance, excellent price.
By Robert J. Hogan
I just received this dado set for Christmas. I set it up on my Jet contractor saw and cut 3/4" dados 3/8" deep in pine, oak, and melamine with no problems whatsoever. The dados were absolutely flat with no tearout in the pine or oak. There was a microscopic amount of tearout on the melamine, but I had to search extremely hard and squint just right to see it. My saw never even began to slow or "bog" down even when cutting the oak. For the average woodworker, this set is perfect. I am extremely satisfied.

5Flat, Clean Dadoes
By A Customer
Right out of the box onto my Delta table saw, cut flat bottomed dadoes with no splintering. Case came with the scantest instructions and didn't diagram all the thickness combinations. I may pick up the shim kit for less than 1/8" increment set ups.

5Jet Riser Block
By S. Boris
I recently purchased a Jet 14 inch closed base bandsaw. It works great. Before I ordered any blades for it, I decided to get the Riser block first. The Riser block increases your cutting height from 6 to 12 inches. Your band saw blade size will then go from 93 1/2 inches to 105 inches. If you need this, get it before you buy any blades because your old blades will be too short. This is not an item that you can take off at any time. It is a permanent option. The Riser Block was very easy to install. You remove the big bolt that holds the top wheel support the the bottom and add the Riser block and use the new bolt to secure it. The kit comes with a metal rear blade guard. The one that came with my saw was plastic. The only tricky part was lifting off the upper wheel and reattaching it. Since it is fastened at the back, it wanted to tip forward. With me Riser installed, I can resaw fire wood and thick beams into boards. Think of all the flavors of wood you can now use for projects.

5Added versatility can't be beat
By David J. Wilga
...no matter where I looked, Including JET's own site, I could not come up with a listing of included parts, and the tiny picture of kit found on everyone's web site is nearly useless. Sure I trust JET -- but only to a point. For those like me who have modified their bandsaw with accessories like the Carter de-tensioner, or roller bearings, rest assured this kit will still fit, and you won't lose any functionality.

The parts in my kit were as follows:

1. Rear blade guard (metal, not the cheezy plastic that came with the saw)

2. Longer v-grooved shaft for the front/upper blade guard, enabling your upper guides to extend all the way to the table-top. Read the instructions carefully to install this one, or you'll be chasing a very small ball-bearing around your shop.

3. Front Blade Guard -- sheet metal, just like the original, but with an adjustable extension. Mine didn't quite fit the bolt holes, even on the OEM guide, but a couple passes with a file fixed it in short order.

4. Cast Aluminum Riser Block and hold-down screw.

5. 105" saw blade -- toss it out and buy a TimberWolf brand.

Assembly was a snap. Mine went together in about 20 minutes. The hardest part was balancing the upper roller assembly while tightening the hold-down screw. Not really too big of an issue, but a third hand to hold the bolt steady while you hand-tighten the nut would be helpful. Alternately, you could do as I did and use a piece of tape on the bolt head to keep it from turning as you snug the nut.

After it's all set according to included instructions, you may want to go one step further and tap a 10-32 hole in the back of the original lower cast aluminum bracket. It will allow you to re-use the original power cable loom (W shaped bracket) and thus keep the power cords from chafing on the lower blade door. The instructions don't call for this, but it's never a good idea to allow power cords to rub against sheet metal.

5Let the Resawing begin
By John Young
I added the riser block to the 14" closed stand Jet bandsaw. The installation was easy, the instructions straightforward. With the added height, I can now resaw some serious wood! Just a note, if you are thinking of buying this, you will need all new blades. The standard ones will not fit after you put in the riser.

4A behemoth! Puckered belt/crowned wheel problem...
By Ken Bean
When this unit arrived the first thing that impressed me was it's size. This thing is huge! It's also very fast, and very powerful. Watch your fingertips! It's also very heavy. You need 2 people, at least, to set it up. The stand takes the most time, it has close to a zillion bolts...

Seems to be well-designed: The tables can both be set with precision and the sawdust collection passages are well thought-out. The quick-release lever for belt removal and the graphite pad/platen behind the belt are nice touches. As on other of Jet's machines, the weak links are things like the 90 degree stops for the tables, which don't have good repeatability. Keep a machinist's square handy. In all other respects, though, it truly seems an industrial quality machine.

The motor and sanding disc are extremely quiet, and virtually vibrationless. You have to be careful because in a shop with a fair level of background noise it might be possible to forget it's running. (I run it mainly with the sanding belt off, for reasons explained below; with the belt installed it's definitely noisier.)

After you shut the sander off the disc will coast for an amazingly long time before coming to a stop (with sanding belt off, of course). I thought, boy this thing either has really good bearings, or a lot of inertia, or perhaps both.

The one problem I encountered with the sander is that, perhaps because it was shipped with the sanding belt installed, the belt had two puckers in it which corresponded exactly with where it had been in contact with the drive and idler wheels. These wheels are both crowned the same way band saw wheels are, to help center the belt, I guess. (But perhaps too much.) When I first started the sander up, the puckers in the belt took a small bite out of the belt sanding table before I could hit the off switch! The belt was high quality, it said Made in Germany on the back. I guess it had just gotten stretched while sitting on the crowned wheels. I took the belt off and left it off for about a week. It seemed to regain it's original shape and the puckers disappeared. But after leaving it on the machine for a week the puckers were back. Anyone else had this problem?

I told the Tool Doctor at Jet about this problem. His remedy was to send me a new sanding belt. However, when I received the package, there were 10 sanding belts enclosed, probably more than I will ever use in a lifetime! I think maybe they made a mistake...

Overall very impressed with the machine. I'm still not sure whether I should leave the sanding belt on the machine when I'm not using it...the crowned wheels are pretty radically crowned and I wonder if they tend to distort the belt when it just sits there. I have absolutely no complaints about the disc part. It is so quiet, accurate and vibration-free you really have to look twice to make sure it's moving!

A mobile base is a necessity, if you ever plan to move it. This is one of Jet's higher quality pieces of equipment that is of the same caliber/quality level as, say, their 10" cabinet saw.

5"NOT A TOY"!
By Robert A. Ricciardi
This tool is very impressive and not a toy as some others may be. If Jet keeps this type of quality in workmanship going and the costs down, the competition will be blown away. The first thing that impressed me was the weight. You will need two adults to get it out of the box and without a mobile base this unit will stay parked in the shop. The fininh was well done and it looks like a tool that will last a life time. Assembly was a snap and the instructions were well written. I could not believe how quiet this unit runs and without vibration ! I also like the idea of one dust port for both ends of the tool. I have another Jet product and I noticed if there is anything I could say in the negative sense is the 90/45 deg. stops could be better. This would not change my mind about the unit ,it's just an observation that needs a mention. I really don't think anyone would be dissapointed with the purchase of this one ! Good Job Jet!

5Some details on this great machine
By Rex Wiederanders
I received my sander this weekend and am surprised at how goodit is. I would like to pass along a few comments to those looking fora sander in this price range. I have always wanted the old style Delta sander, but the price differential cannot be ignored. The Jet is a cast iron beast, but carefully machined and well designed. It has cast iron dust shrouds, when plastic or sheet metal would have been an option. The base is an extreamly large casting which goes a long way to reducing vibration. Be sure to have help on hand when you attempt to lift it out of its box. The disc has no visible runout on my unit and sands smoothly. Tracking on the belt is easy with a fine degree of adjustment. Both the belt and disc tables have 90 degree stops which are beefy and work. It has a single effective 4" dust collection port for both the belt and the disc. I really like the included work stop which replaces the belt table and allows full use of the belt. The machining is superb, and the tables are ground. The paint appears to be powder coated. The motor is slighly overkill, but I like that. The only fault I could find is the two locking knobs for the disc table are far too small and are difficult to tighten. After many years of Delta and Powermatic machines, this one is a great fit in my shop. END

3Solid & Smooth, but some Quality Concerns
By Robert Strasser
A two foot square smooth cast iron table top combined with a very smooth spindle makes this machine very easy to work with. I measured the spindle runout to be 0.004 inches maximum for all spindles, except for the 1/4 spindle that was 0.013. My lower rating of only 3 stars is due to 3 quality issues. The top came with chemical stains, but was smooth and usable. I had to re-wire the switch... minor but should not have been required. And third, the table inserts are not flush with the table top. This can cause a piece of wood to catch as you are sanding with a resulting cup or glitch. Jet is sending me a new set of table inserts, but I have a feeling it is a poorly machined table top. I could easily shim the inserts, but for the price of the machine I expect it to be right and I want JET to know their quality control is slipping.

5A big winner
By Michelle Stone
I've tried some other bench top spindle sanders and had to move up from a piece of junk that I've been using for the past couple of years.I wanted a bigger table, smoother action from the sanding spindle, and a smoother surface to work on. Additionally, I wanted a dedicated tool on its own stand. I spend a lot of time at the spindle sander. I wanted a comfortable and rock steady station to work. After looking at what was available, my choice came down to this unit and one made by Grizzly. After looking very closely at the pictures and manuals offered by both companies, I decided that these were very likely made by the same company in China. There are virtually no differences that can be determined.... except one. The Jet's table is rounded on the corners. I envisioned pemanent bruises on my hips from running into sharp corners of the Grizz.I own several Jet and Delta tools. I like working with tools that are well finished, that have a surplus of power for the job, that have smooth and flat work surfaces, and look good. I have customers in my shop all the time, so appearances mean a lot.So, for the looks and rounded top corners, I decided to spend the extra couple hundred for the Jet. I am not dissapointed. The work surface has been machined flat and sanded smooth. It has the nicest surface of any machine in my shop. The unit came fully assembled. All I had to do was to remove the protective gunk that prevents rust from the table top and install the sleeves on the spindles. The manual is nicely prepared in B&W and has good pictures to illustrate the points being made. The manual is also pleasantly short yet covers all significant details. The spindle action is smooth and quiet. There is plenty of power to quickly remove material but it is easy to control as well. The result is you'll have exceptional control when removing material. I hooked up my dust collection and with only 650 CFM, it pulls most all the dust very well. I'm very impressed with the operation of the tool. It is truly the nicest OSS that I've used. The machine comes with a full assortment of different sized spindles of 60 grit paper. I practically never use 60 grit for my projects. I've found that sanding spindles are available from Southern Tool and from Grizzly. I've got some on order for the sizes and grits I use most. It also has a 4 inch spindle. This is great for sanding straight edges or large arcs. One nit that I have is that there are two shelves for spindle storage, one mounted on each side of the cabinet. The holes in these shelves accomodate the smaller spindles well enough. But the larger spindles have large nuts on the bottom and don't fit in the smaller holes. They keep tipping or even fall out when I move the tool around.Other than the silly thing with the spindle storage, I feel that this tool is of the highest quality. I am very happy with this purchase and highly recommend the tool for anyone who needs a spindle sander.

4A great not-so-little sander!
By A Customer
This machine is solidly built. It runs smoothly and does a great sanding job on all your curvy things. Despite a warning that it was on backorder and that delivery wouldn't be possible for many weeks, www.Amazon.com confirmed within three days that it had shipped! With the exception of the wooden pallet on which it was shipped (the pallet had been smashed to the point of almost being useless), the sander arrived intact and ready to go. It's heavy, so plan on having some help on hand at your end to assist with the unloading. It's top is ground flat and glassy smooth and provides ample support for any of the projects I'm likely to encounter at home. It's also square to the spindle which is always a plus. There was some spillage of the 90 weight oil from its reservoir during shipping (caused by the unit having been tipped too far, no doubt), and some missing or chipped paint from the backside of the base unit where the access door butts against it. Aside from these minor defects, I'm very pleased with the condition in which it arrived, and very happy with this choice in an oscillating sander. I doubt there's abetter one out there for the $. I've given this purchase only four stars for one reason only: www.Amazon.com does not sell replacement sleeves for this sander. The sleeves are not readily available in any of the local woodworking stores and I haven't figured out yet where I'm going to get them (perhaps the folks at JET can make a recommendation?).

4Good Value and Good Quality
By kevan d western
If you utilize mortise and tenon joints and have been creating them with a router or a drill press with a mortising attachment, you will really enjoy this product. There are several positive attributes about this tool and one negative.Positive Attributes:1) HP is quite adequate.2) The chisels and bits I received were very sharp. They believe that they would serve the non-professional well. I usually use Clico bits, but I recommend that you at least try these before you purchase an expensive set. You might be as pleasantly suprised as I was and you could save yourself some money.3) Fit and finish is very good.4) The column mounts to the base structure with capscrews. The Jet engineers were thinking, because they provided two assembly hole patterns. The second hole pattern allows you to turn the head around 180 degrees. This will enable you to mortise stock one or two inches taller than normal designed capacity without a major setup changes.5) Good quality for the price.

One Negative attribute:If you have read any of the reviews of mortise machines, you will notice a common issue with bench top mortise machines is the hold down fixture. Jet is considered to have one of the better hold down fixtures. If you have used drill press with a mortise attachment you have lived the pain of setup and hold down. This machine is by far a huge improvement over a drill press attachment. However, this hold down fixture could also be improved. Mine is not parallel with the base surface or square with the back fence. This allows the stock to rack slightly when withdrawing the chisel from the mortise. It doesn't take much movement of the wood to bind the chisel in the mortise.

Note:I am upgrading to the Powermatics floor model because of the improved hold down, the translating table, and the larger chisel capacity. I am very happy with my Jet mortiser and do regret purchasing it. I just want more.

Operator errors to avoid: A) If you try force the chisel and bit, you run the risk of elevating the temperature of your cutting tools and ruining the temper. Try to keep the wood from smoking. B) If you force the cut faster than the helix on the bit can remove the chips, you can induce too much heat into the cutting tools and could stall the motor. C) The HP is fine. If the wood is smoking, slow down. D) Lastly, it seems too obvious, but be prepared to mount this to a table or some other ridgid structure before use.

5JET Benchtop Mortiser is Tops!
By Roy Brouwer
After having used biscuit joiners, dowels, and hand-made mortise and tenon furniture, I decided to invest in a powered benchtop mortising machine. After seeing and using various brands, I found the JET JBM-5 to be the best designed and most precisely built of the lot. The machining, design, simplicity of use are the best available for the novice-to-advanced woodworker. The hold-down bracket is designed to clamp evenly and the depth stop is easily adjusted without tools, unlike the Delta model. Another useful feature is the unit can be reversed on its base, allowing mortising of long objects--I built a clamping devise on the back of my mortising stand and can accomodate 36" long material for end-mortises or wide stock. The 2 year warranty should be more than adequate, given the history of other JET tools I've used--all running prefectly as designed.

5Love that mortiser
By Gerald B. Hatley
I have a Delta drill press and had used a mortising attachment for several years. It is quite difficult and time consuming to set up. I had wanted a dedicated mortiser and decided to try the Jet, and boy am I pleased. Basically, right out of the box you are ready to make great mortises. I attached it to an auxilliary table as described in the manual and began work. I am building an antique pie safe and am using very hard red oak lumber. The Jet tooled through the red oak like cutting through butter. I especially like the slow speed (1750 RPM) that the drill bit turns. You are assured that you will not burn the wood. The chisels are also incredibly sharp. I found it easy to set the work fence to center the work piece and properly setting the cutting depth adjustment is a breeze. All in all, a very fine tool. Very glad I bought it!

5Very nice with one little exception.
By W. Lawrence
Fortunately this beast comes fully assembled except for the infeed and outfeed table and arrived in excellent shape due to the good crating at the factory. It is already setup at the factory and I did not have to make any adjustments. Operation is intuitive and fit and finish on the machine is very nice. The only problem I saw was on my first use. A large chip of wood flew up and hit the outbound chip deflector and broke it because it is made of plastic. Personally I think it should have been made of metal to avoid this problem as I think it will happen again. On the plus side, I called JET and they were very helpful and happy to send the replacement part without any argument. Even with the plastic chip deflector I would highly recommend this machine for several reasons. First, it does a great job as a planer with a full 20" planing width (the blades are a little wider than 20"), second, I find it well assembled and a heavy duty machine, third, obviously great support after the sale, and fourth, I couldn't beat Amazon's price anywhere and you can't get any better deal than free freight especially since we are talking over 700 lbs.

4Jet 20" Planer -- Satisfied
By James E. Ballenthin
A very good planer. I read all the reviews I could find for the Jet and other planers before deciding to purchase the Jet, and I am very satisfied. I considered giving 5 stars, but I am very reluctant to give 5 stars to anyone. There always is room for improvement.I agree that if the planer head moved rather than the table it would be easier to support long boards, but after using the planer, I regard this as a minor issue, as board support (at least on 8' boards) is very firm and solid. The first boards I planed were 3/4" white pine, 12" and 13-1/2" wide, for some cabinet doors. Excellent results. Powerful, firm feed, and superb finish (which I would expect from new blades). Then on the bandsaw I resawed into two boards some 4" and 6" wide birch which I had rough sawn on my sawmill to 1-1/4" (1-1/8" dry). The resaw turned out a little wavy, and I planed these down to 5/16". These are for a new ceiling in our remodeled bathroom, and the 5/16" thickness was fine. Again, results were superb, and I especially noticed no to practically no snipe. I need more experience to discover best how to minimize what snipe there is.The Jet planer itself is a very substantial machine. I put it on a mobile base, as I need to move it occasionally to make room in my shop. Except for the mobile base, this is a two-person machine to move. I used a jack and supports to lift it onto the mobile base, as I had no access to a second person. If I had 3-phase available, I would have opted for the 3-phase model of this planer, but the single phase 230V (my shop voltage supply actually is a srong 240V) so far has had plenty of power and I have no complaint. My other planer experience is with my Dewalt 12-1/2" bench planer, which I have been very satisifed with in general, although it is no match for the Jet. I will keep the Dewalt for lighter planing uses. I also have used my friend's off-brand 12" bench planer which was definitely inferior to the Dewalt. Which reminds me that everytime I try to cut corners on serious tools, I make a big mistake. My shop is minimally equipped for the quantity of shavings emitted by this planer. I have a Delta 2-bag collector with an intervening collector barrel to catch most of the droppings, and this fills really fast. While not an issue with the planer, it does slow production for me because of the need to very frequently empty the collector bag and barrel.Free shipping with Amazon was a definite plus. Shipping was fast, the trucker arrived with a drop gate delivery truck, and I used my forklift to carry the pallet with the Jet into my shop. The planer obviously had been tipped over in transit, and one cover was cracked, but the planer itself was true in all respects -- a tribute to the substantial nature of this machine. I called Jet on the cracked cover, and Jet sent sent me a replacement which arrived within one week. I had expected to have to file a claim with the truck company.I also have a Jet 10" table saw which now is about 10 years old -- a faithful, strong performer; a Jet 6" jointer with which I am very satisfied; and a Jet 18" bandsaw which is only two years old and frankly I have not used a lot, not because of the machine but because of limited applications so far. It's biggest job so far was resawing the birch, which indicated the bandsaw may be under-powered as I had to saw quite slowly. To this add a 12" Delta radial arm saw and a variety of quality hand power and manual tools and there is little I cannot do in my shop.A final word to the wise -- if a machine motor can be re-wired for 230-240V any you have it available, do it -- the performance improves markedly. I have placed 240V outlets all around my shop so every power tool that can run on 240V now does. And a word to the manufacturers -- always supply motors that can be rewired for 240V operation.

5A Winner...
By Wild Alaskan
A nice Planer from Jet...Arrives assembled, ready to use within minutes after arrival. Cuts efficiently, I like the top rollers for moving your stock quickly back into feed. We milled Log Slabs one afternoon, taking just a few minutes from "chainsaw cut" down to "ready for final sanding".I have been very pleased with this planer, although it is not a daily use tool for me, I feel it has performed well. The only thing that causes any problem is that the feed table raises and lowers with thickness adjustments (Rather than the cutter assembly)...So I cannot easily build an outfeed table, since it too, would have to move with the planer table. Therefore, it is necessary to have two people planing large pieces. But, a good planer for the price...and free shipping! That makes it tough to beat.

4Excellent collector for a small shop
By A Customer
I bought a Jet DC-650 from Tool Crib in December 99 and I couldn't be more pleased with it's performance. My shop co-exists with the family automobile in a two car garage. The collector is attached to one machine at a time with a 10ft flex hose; in this mode of use, it has all the power that's needed. Before I got this machine, I'd do almost anything to avoid using my thickness planer - cleaning up the mess often took longer than than the planing! And to a lesser degree, the same could be said about my jointer. Without a controlled sampling, I'd estimate that the collector easily captures better than 99.5% of the dust from these machines. Dust collection from my contractors style table saw isn't quite as efficient, but that was expected. I still capture well over 60% of the dust from it. The air is cleaner, the garage is much cleaner, and cleanup time is a fraction of what it once was. I don't fully agree with the notion that bag emptying is a snap; even with improvements to the clamping system, it's still a "pain in the butt" (and I think this comment can probably be generalized to all the Taiwanese made single stage units). This prompted me to add a first stage separator. I use the one built around a 30 gal fiber drum that's sold by Highland Hardware. Now I collect probably 6 times as much material before emptying the drum and bag - and I've devised a method of capturing a 30 gal trash bag inside the first stage drum so emptying it is truly a snap. You don't have to use these machines as they come out of the box; you can put the DC-650 on a larger base that accomodates a first stage separator and a method for holding and transporting the attached flex hose. It's generally agreed that the ultimate dust collector is some configuration of a cyclone, but I don't know where one of these can be found for the money that will equal the mobility and performance of the DC-650. It's very simply an outstanding machine for a very modest price.

5Jet DC-650 Dust Collector
By Clyde Franklin
Although this is on the low end of power (650 CFM) I find that it works well with my all my tools. Once I found adequate adapters for all the different connections on my sanders, shaper, joiner, table saw, etc. I have found when using cheap 4" sewer pipe for overhead delivery of the vacuum and using as little flexible pipe as possible, to keep down the air flow resistance, it has more than sufficient capacity, if running only one tool at a time.

I rate this collector 5 stars on the basis of getting a big return for the investment.

If you are looking for a great collector for the one-man shop I highly recommend the Jet DC-650.

4Jet 650 dust collector
By J. Webb
I have used this dust collector in my garage/shop for more than a year. It has worked great! I will not, again, go without a dust collector. This one is very mobil and easy to empty and I have had no problems with leaks. I would advise buying another set of bags to filter to .5 micron particles. I have used it on my tablesaw, planer and router table.
