Small, Convenient, Works Great!!

The Canon BJC-85 is a small, lightweight printer that is easy to pack and works wonderfully well. It has both parallel and USB connections for PC's or MAC's. The quality of the black text printing is very good - especially when you consider the small size and light weight of this printer. The color printing is also amazingly good. The software loads easily, and I had mine up and running in a matter of minutes attached to my laptop. You'll need to buy either a parallel or USB cable, since it isn't included. Canon has the best reputation, by far, of all the brands who make portable printers and this is their newest model. This is really a terrific little printer that is well worth the price for people on the road who need to print from their laptops.

Just what I was looking for..

This printer is a convenient size for someone with limited desk space or for taking it with you when traveling. The battery pak mentioned that can be used with this printer is available through DELL. It may take a bit of searching to find it. Click on Printers, then look for the Canon BJC-85, then click on more details under the printer icon, then related products on the next screen. It does not state for BJC-85 but it is the correct battery pack or ask Dell for reassurance, I did! I have been very pleased with the print quality of such a small printer, even the graphics are great. For Word Processing that requires mostly black ink, use the large BCI-10 Ink Cartridge it is better than the small black tank you use with color printing. I have not been able to locate the Infrared Driver for it does anyone know where that can be acquired? I am more than pleased with this quality and size of this printer.

Slow and unreliable

I have had this printer for almost four years now, and while it has saved my bacon on the road a number of times, it has also really let me down at some crucial moments. First, like a lot of older Canon printers, it is noisy and slow. It takes forever to get started on a page. But also like a lot of canons, when it is working right the output is beautiful.But you cannot count on finding ink cartridges for this printer on the road. It also has a weird and unpleasant ink cartridge system which includes two very different little trays, and three different kinds of tank.But what made me finally leave the thing in a hotel room was its tendency to get halfway through a print job and jam or inexplicably give an error signal. I have spent hours trying to get a clean copy of a single transparency. Very frustrating.

Great Product -- Does the Job

I just got the Samsung Yepp and I think it's a great player. From the moment you open the box it definitely has that "touch me, feel me" look to it. This thing is very very small (smaller than I expected from pictures on the web), I'd say about the size of a deck of cards. You can easily "palm" it in your hand, and it weighs almost NOTHING (I hardly notice it when it's in my pocket, I think it's lighter than my wallet). This certainly beats carrying around a discman and a caselogic.

The sound quality is excellent (The earbuds that come with it are okay, but I prefer my Sony Fontopias). The controls are intuitive, and the PC interface software is easy to use (Make sure to get the newest version from the samsung website). The voice recorder is definitely a nice bonus; it's great for recording lectures in class. I don't use the phonebook feature b/c I have a Palm Pilot, but that's also a nice feature.

My only reservations are that:

It only plays MP3 format, unlike other players which also support RMA, WMA, etc. There's no backlighting for the LCD. No USB yet (but due out soon).

If you can deal without these extras for now, this player is for you. If you shop around, you can find this player a lot cheaper than any other player out there.

Samsung Yepp YP-E64 Review

The Yepp 64 is very cool. With 64MB built in and a SmartMedia slot for additional memory, this device ranks among the top in terms of storage space.

It is very small and very light. Sound quality is excellent - although the earbuds that it comes with are not that great. (I went out and purchased a set of Sony Earbuds - much much better).

It comes with an ECP Parallel Port Cable, but also supports USB (cable sold separately). As long as you have an EPP/ECP Parallel port the transfer rate is actually pretty fast.

Although I was't planning on ever using it - the built in microphone is pretty good for recording live events :)

It plays all forms of MP3 with no problems (Variable bitrate, high bitrate etc..)

The only negatives I can see are, you need to buy new headphones, The display isn't backlit.

I am a very happy customer.

You will not be disappointed

After hesitating between the choice of the Yepp and the Rio, I chose the Yepp, and I am happy I did. It is very easy to use. I had mine full of songs within 20 minutes of opening the box. I will probably buy the optional USB connection, but the parallel port transferred the mp3 files fast enough. This thing is small--smaller than the pictures make it look and smaller than I was expecting. About the size of a deck of cards, but thinner. Its way lighter than my StarTac cell phone. The headphones, of course, are not the best, but that should be expected. It sounds great, and there are a few EQ modes you can use. The microphone works really well. Battery life is suprisingly long. Volume is good enough that you can hear the music in a noisy atmosphere. I don't think the lack of backlighting is a big deal because the controls are simple and this also saves battery juice. It comes loaded with two strange sounding songs that I deleted. I haven't used the phone book option, so I can't comment on that. Overall, I was pleasantly suprised about the high level of quality because I was unsure of whether to get this or the Rio. Yepp Yepp!

Great little TV for bedroom or dorm room

Very happy with this TV. Wanted something small to watch videos on in my bedroom and this is perfect. The picture quality from videos is actually better than on the 19" we've got in our living room. You have to set the clock or the light blinks incessantly, but overall it's feature packed. The remote is light and easy to use, automatically turns on captioning if you mute and has 30-sec fast forward to jump past recorded commercials. The onscreen navigation is very easy to use. Recommended if you're looking for a light, compact and fully functional TV/VCR combination.

Take me to your dorm room!

This is the perfect bedroom companion! The TV works beautifully, and the VCR is nicely integrated both on the set and via the remote. The adequate (but not great) FM tuner is a nice touch, and the alarm clock feature is wonderful, allowing you to get up to music or to TV. That it has a built-in battery source to counteract a power failure and an auto-time setting feature make it that much more secure when doing alarm clock duty. Overall, this is the Swiss Army Knife of small TVs.

You get what you pay for

It's a great little TV, but there are some things to keep in mind before you buy it.

First of all, you will never use the FM radio tuner, so don't let that feature influence your purchase. The presets are erased if you unplug the unit, and the controls are too difficult to use for it to be worthwhile.

Second, the remote control is the worst-designed remote I have ever seen. It consists of 34 buttons -- all but two the same size and shape -- in a 1.5-inch by 3.5-inch space. The buttons are poorly arranged, so it will be months before you you will be able to operate the remote without looking at it. This is a major problem in the dark. The remote really will drive you nuts.

Third, there is no video-out port on the unit, meaning that you can't hook its VCR up to a larger TV. This may not be a big deal, but if you were expecting to be able to use the built-in VCR in every way that a regular VCR can be used, think again.

Fourth, for some bizarre reason, there are no picture controls on this TV. This means that you can't adjust the color, contrast, brightness, tint, etc. Probably not a big deal for most people, but it's something that is included on almost every other TV out there.

However, the TV has some really excellent features. The sound quality is excellent, although there is only one speaker, so you don't get stereo sound. The video quality is also quite good. The SLEEP function is good if you want to fall asleep with the TV on. The programming feature is top-notch -- you can set up eight separate programs to record your favorite shows, and you can set it up to record Monday-through-Friday, or every Monday, for example, or for one specific day. Although you can't watch one channel while it's recording another channel, the recording feature is very well done and easy to use.

By the way, although 13 inches sounds small, it is definitely large enough to see across a bedroom or dorm room.

It's probably worth the money, but it definitely has its flaws.

Exactly what I was looking for

Before this watch came on to the market, I had looked at other GPS watches from time to time, but they generally seemed too big/bulky and expensive. This is the first moderately priced GPS watch with the features I was looking for. I have been using it for 1 week and am happy to say that it operates as advertised. It is lightweight, not too bulky, and starts/stops with the push of one button. The main face is preset to display run time and total distance, but you can toggle to a second screen to see your pace. The watch notifies you as you complete each mile, and displays your average pace for the mile as well as your average pace at the end of your run. You can also set the watch for run/walk intervals, or use the "virtual pacer" to notify you if you are running slower or faster than your desired pace.Battery life may be a big issue if you want to use the watch outside of running, but I have just used it during runs, and recharged while connecting to Garmin's website to download my run stats, so it hasn't been an issue for me. If you are looking for a basic GPS watch that tracks how far and how fast, this is a great choice! Note that it will not monitor your heart rate, so if that feature is important to you, you should like at a higher end version.

Simpler, smaller... but lacks some critical things

What I want from a running watch is pretty simple. I want a watch that shows me my time, distance, and pace, in reasonably big font that I can read while running. I want decent battery life, so I don't have to charge every single run. I want a watch that doesn't make me wait for 5 minutes while it looks for satellites. And I want a watch that looks and feels like a watch rather than a small computer strapped to my arm.For years, I've run with the Forerunner 305. It is a product I love to hate. It works well, and in a way it's been indispensable to me as a runner, but it is also a little bit deficient in nearly every respect mentioned above.I've considered buying a new Garmin, such as the 410, but always decided not to after reading reviews. So when I heard about the 10, I was thrilled. Finally, Garmin had figured it out.I've had it now for a couple weeks. The watch is a big improvement, but it also remains deficient in some critical respects. In fact, sadly, I am not sure I will keep it.It is small. It looks and feels infinitely better than the 305. The display is easy to read. Big font means I can see and read it at a quick glance. The buttons are easy to find. The interface is simple and intuitive, making it easy to scroll around and program the watch. The battery life seems very good so far. Finally, it seems to pick up the satellites much quicker than the 305 does. In short, there are many things to love.And yet...1. The display is not fully customizable. There are only four things that it can display (1) pace, (2) distance, (3) time, (4) calories. You can display two and only two of those at any time, in pairs.2. While running, I generally want to know three things -- pace, distance, and time. On the 305, I can customize to view all three at once. On the 10, I can't. I understand the trade-off: if the watch displayed three things, then the font would be smaller, and so you couldn't see stuff at a glance. So I get why they made this choice. But it is nonetheless a drawback.3. I could live with 1 and 2. But then there is the killer -- it will not display lap pace. Instead, it will only show current pace.Over the years, with my 305, I've come to rely on lap pace for the simple reason that it is much, much more accurate. "Current pace" jumps around a lot, even if you are running at a completely even pace. The reason, I suppose, is the watch only communicates with the satellite every few seconds, so then it makes a sort of quick estimation about your spot pace. Lap pace, by contrast, has a bunch more data points, everything in the last mile (if you have it set to auto-lap at one mile). So it is far, far more accurate.Let's say you're running a 7:35 pace. Your lap pace will say 7:35. Your current pace, however, will jump around -- 7:20, then 7:40, then 7:30, etc.I'm sorry, but if you are even a remotely serious runner, this matters a great deal. If you are running a race, you probably have a goal in mind. You therefore probably have a specific pace you need to run. Like you want to run a 1:50 half marathon, so you know you need to stay with a 8:23 pace. The Garmin Forerunner 10 will not help you very much -- because you can't tell whether you are actually running an 8:23 as opposed to an 8:15 or an 8:30. Because all you get is the rough approximation of "current pace."Now, if you have it set to auto-lap, then it will display your lap pace as a "lap banner" at the completion of each lap. So you have it set to auto-lap each mile, then at the end of each mile, it will show you your exact time. That's good, and to some extent, it helps to make up for the lack of constant lap pace display.But in a way, that almost makes the whole thing more maddening. I know that my watch is calculating lap pace -- it is in there somewhere. But I can't see it until the end of my mile. Why? WHY???I understand that they made a choice to cut down on features to make a simpler watch. But this watch still has a few more elaborate features like "virtual pacer" (which I will never use). If they can have that, why can't they at least give you an option of viewing lap pace?I am running a half marathon next weekend. I would like to wear my new pretty Forerunner 10, but I will probably end up wearing my old clunky 305, just so I can know what my actual pace is. And honestly, that is hugely depressing.

Finally, a great looking women's GPS watch!

As soon as I heard that the forerunner 10 would be hitting the market I did a ton of research on the thing to figure out if it was right for me or not. This is my first GPS watch so I wanted to familiarize myself with all the features and consider if indeed this was the one for me. In the past I was aware that Garmin watches are great but I must say, they are not very attractive (for most women's smaller wrists). This compared with their price point kept me away but the F10 is very affordable and cute in either pink/green. Note the black version is a bit larger than the pink or green. I got the watch about a week ago and so far I love it. The instruction manual it came with is barely needed (and lacks a lot of info anyways). It was super easy for me to figure out and lightweight on the run. I love how it has the run/walk feature, virtual pacer and is water proof as well. All I really wanted/needed was a watch that will tell me exactly how far I went, how fast, avg speed so any additional info for me was an xtra. It holds up to your last 5 runs showing you avg speed for each, total time, calories burned, date and distance. It has a break down for laps (each is 1 mile and no you can't change the lap distance) it will show your pace per lap as well. Syncing with Garmin connect was very simple and Wow, tons of information on there as well. For me, this will greatly enhance my runs whether I am training for an event or just going out running for fun. I enjoy being able to look back and compare my achievements over time. You can even set weekly or monthly goals on the garmin connect site. Before this watch I was using runkeeper to track my runs but it was not very precise at all. That combined with having to lug my phone on my arm was a drag. It's nice to look down on your wrist and see the info right there. I love this watch and highly recommend it for anyone who doesn't need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive and detailed Garmin GPS watches. Pros: Reliable, Easy to use, Waterproof, Lightweight, Nice size display w/light, Easy to sync w/Garmin connect Cons: 5 hour battery time (after 5 hrs you have to charge it via USB cable to your computer). Personally this doesn't bother me as I usually run for about an hour 5x a week. If you plan on going for runs longer than 5 hrs at a time, this is NOT the watch for you. If the watch is not in GPS mode it is said to last about 2 weeks.*Update on 2/11/13* Due to a recent injury I've been unable to run but I still love my Garmin. I'm happy to report 4+ weeks without charging and it's still ON like a watch (not using GPS feature) a bonus!!

No regrets.

Bottom line. I went shopping for one of these for about a month before I finally got the LV-75 and as soon as I got it, I had to really see if all the stuff I read on this board had any validity. Here are my results. 1) BATTERY TIME 2 tests. Fully charged overnight each time, brightness set to "0" (goes from -5 to 5), using headphones ONLY: Test 1 --> 4h:55min + 18 seconds Test 2 --> 4h:50min + 44 seconds

(each test had about 5 min worth of fast-forwarding, change out disks.etc... Have yet to test the entire time with speakers on and I'm guessing that these results would drop dramatically.)

2) PICTURE QUALITY (Using about 8 different movies, being viewed from 3 feet away) Sharpness: Over-all, pretty good. Could clearly see pixels but stopped noticing them after about 10 mins. Doesn't match my regular flatscreen but hey, I can't really take a 27' Sony VEGA on a flight so I'm not complaining. Color reproduction: Trying out all the color settings, I found that I couldn't get truly good skin reproduction without over bleeding the screen. Cooler colors such as blues and greens came out better than my regular TV. I also checked for broken pixels and didn't find one. Overall, the picture is above average to very good.

3) SOUND Best ever micro speakers I've ever heard were from my Thinkpad. Bass was non-existent but overall sound was great. The LV75 comes very close to that performance. The area where the LV75 blows away my Thinkpad is that it decodes 5.1 DTS and mixes it into my 2 channel headphones. Even though it's two channels, it still sounds awesome compared to regular 5.1 digital surround. (Try watching Gladiator DTS/ES which decodes 6 channels)

4) EQUIPMENT If you were thinking about getting this player instead of a regular rack player, think again. I use an optical out on my regular DVD and expected to just plug my Toslink into the LV75. I was rejected! You need to buy a Miniplug-to-Toslink cable that is not provided to get the optical feed. If you still want 5.1 digital surround, you need to buy 2 more Miniplug-to-RCA cables (they provide you with one, which alone will give you 2 channel stereo). The S-video works, but I don't really use it so I don't know if it will give you 5.1, but if it does, you won't have to go shopping again.

5) OVERHEATING The unit does get very hot when you are using it without the battery. (the battery sits on the bottom and insulates the heat from your lap!) With the battery, non-existent. The battery on mine NEVER got warm enough to even notice. I watched half of Almost Famous laying down in bed with the unit sitting on my bare chest and I didn't feel a thing.

6) ACTUAL SIZE The pictures show you this thin little unit, when folded, will be about an inch thick. This is without the battery. With the battery, it gets about a pound heavier and 1.5" (I know that it isn't much, but considering it was just an inch before, that's a 50% increase).

7) EXTRA BATTERIES I have yet been able to locate on my manual where shows me how to order extra batteries, I can't really say, but I [found it] on the panasonic website [...]

OVERALL VERDICT Not regretting my purchase in the slightest. This is one of the coolest things I've bought, ever... and it makes me smile just looking at it. Last suggestions: Buy the 7 inch instead of the 5. Get a good pair of headphones.

The biggest thing on your mind while watching this unit is TIME--> how much of it you have left. [...] I on last biz trip to NY, I was sitting in a rear exit row with about 3' of leg room in front of me with my LV-75 sitting on my lap... and everytime someone passed me to use the bathroom, all I could feel were the "jealous eyes." I don't have to say that this thing cuts flight times in half. -----> If you can't afford it, don't buy it because you won't use it often, but if you travel... don't leave home without it.

Great for the Kids!

Took the kids on vacation. Great player to keep the kids occupied on a long flight. When I arrived I connected the DVD-LV75 to the TV where I was staying. With 25 movies in a CD case, it required practically no room at all. Great for the kids! (I only got one complaint on the plane from someone who didn't like the sound --- with more than one viewer, we didn't use headphones) I waited for a 7" display DVD player and figured that while most other players were first generation, the Panasonic DVD-LV75 was the best bet as it is a second generation product and most of the bugs were worked out. I was right! I have had no problems. The battery lasts for at least two movies (4 hours).

Panasonic DVD-LV75

Wow is the key word here! The Panasonic DVD-LV75 is not only the smallest portable DVD player on the market but probably has the most feature offerings as well! I get 3-4 hours play back on a single battery charge, the screen is crystal sharp, sound is awesome, and plays musical CD's as well.

After looking at several other brands ie: Sharp, Aiwa, this unit beats them hands down. The one thing the Panasonic DVD-LV75 has over the others is size!

The only way to truly appreciate this player is to buy one!

Exactly what I was looking for

Before this watch came on to the market, I had looked at other GPS watches from time to time, but they generally seemed too big/bulky and expensive. This is the first moderately priced GPS watch with the features I was looking for. I have been using it for 1 week and am happy to say that it operates as advertised. It is lightweight, not too bulky, and starts/stops with the push of one button. The main face is preset to display run time and total distance, but you can toggle to a second screen to see your pace. The watch notifies you as you complete each mile, and displays your average pace for the mile as well as your average pace at the end of your run. You can also set the watch for run/walk intervals, or use the "virtual pacer" to notify you if you are running slower or faster than your desired pace.Battery life may be a big issue if you want to use the watch outside of running, but I have just used it during runs, and recharged while connecting to Garmin's website to download my run stats, so it hasn't been an issue for me. If you are looking for a basic GPS watch that tracks how far and how fast, this is a great choice! Note that it will not monitor your heart rate, so if that feature is important to you, you should like at a higher end version.

Simpler, smaller... but lacks some critical things

What I want from a running watch is pretty simple. I want a watch that shows me my time, distance, and pace, in reasonably big font that I can read while running. I want decent battery life, so I don't have to charge every single run. I want a watch that doesn't make me wait for 5 minutes while it looks for satellites. And I want a watch that looks and feels like a watch rather than a small computer strapped to my arm.For years, I've run with the Forerunner 305. It is a product I love to hate. It works well, and in a way it's been indispensable to me as a runner, but it is also a little bit deficient in nearly every respect mentioned above.I've considered buying a new Garmin, such as the 410, but always decided not to after reading reviews. So when I heard about the 10, I was thrilled. Finally, Garmin had figured it out.I've had it now for a couple weeks. The watch is a big improvement, but it also remains deficient in some critical respects. In fact, sadly, I am not sure I will keep it.It is small. It looks and feels infinitely better than the 305. The display is easy to read. Big font means I can see and read it at a quick glance. The buttons are easy to find. The interface is simple and intuitive, making it easy to scroll around and program the watch. The battery life seems very good so far. Finally, it seems to pick up the satellites much quicker than the 305 does. In short, there are many things to love.And yet...1. The display is not fully customizable. There are only four things that it can display (1) pace, (2) distance, (3) time, (4) calories. You can display two and only two of those at any time, in pairs.2. While running, I generally want to know three things -- pace, distance, and time. On the 305, I can customize to view all three at once. On the 10, I can't. I understand the trade-off: if the watch displayed three things, then the font would be smaller, and so you couldn't see stuff at a glance. So I get why they made this choice. But it is nonetheless a drawback.3. I could live with 1 and 2. But then there is the killer -- it will not display lap pace. Instead, it will only show current pace.Over the years, with my 305, I've come to rely on lap pace for the simple reason that it is much, much more accurate. "Current pace" jumps around a lot, even if you are running at a completely even pace. The reason, I suppose, is the watch only communicates with the satellite every few seconds, so then it makes a sort of quick estimation about your spot pace. Lap pace, by contrast, has a bunch more data points, everything in the last mile (if you have it set to auto-lap at one mile). So it is far, far more accurate.Let's say you're running a 7:35 pace. Your lap pace will say 7:35. Your current pace, however, will jump around -- 7:20, then 7:40, then 7:30, etc.I'm sorry, but if you are even a remotely serious runner, this matters a great deal. If you are running a race, you probably have a goal in mind. You therefore probably have a specific pace you need to run. Like you want to run a 1:50 half marathon, so you know you need to stay with a 8:23 pace. The Garmin Forerunner 10 will not help you very much -- because you can't tell whether you are actually running an 8:23 as opposed to an 8:15 or an 8:30. Because all you get is the rough approximation of "current pace."Now, if you have it set to auto-lap, then it will display your lap pace as a "lap banner" at the completion of each lap. So you have it set to auto-lap each mile, then at the end of each mile, it will show you your exact time. That's good, and to some extent, it helps to make up for the lack of constant lap pace display.But in a way, that almost makes the whole thing more maddening. I know that my watch is calculating lap pace -- it is in there somewhere. But I can't see it until the end of my mile. Why? WHY???I understand that they made a choice to cut down on features to make a simpler watch. But this watch still has a few more elaborate features like "virtual pacer" (which I will never use). If they can have that, why can't they at least give you an option of viewing lap pace?I am running a half marathon next weekend. I would like to wear my new pretty Forerunner 10, but I will probably end up wearing my old clunky 305, just so I can know what my actual pace is. And honestly, that is hugely depressing.

Finally, a great looking women's GPS watch!

As soon as I heard that the forerunner 10 would be hitting the market I did a ton of research on the thing to figure out if it was right for me or not. This is my first GPS watch so I wanted to familiarize myself with all the features and consider if indeed this was the one for me. In the past I was aware that Garmin watches are great but I must say, they are not very attractive (for most women's smaller wrists). This compared with their price point kept me away but the F10 is very affordable and cute in either pink/green. Note the black version is a bit larger than the pink or green. I got the watch about a week ago and so far I love it. The instruction manual it came with is barely needed (and lacks a lot of info anyways). It was super easy for me to figure out and lightweight on the run. I love how it has the run/walk feature, virtual pacer and is water proof as well. All I really wanted/needed was a watch that will tell me exactly how far I went, how fast, avg speed so any additional info for me was an xtra. It holds up to your last 5 runs showing you avg speed for each, total time, calories burned, date and distance. It has a break down for laps (each is 1 mile and no you can't change the lap distance) it will show your pace per lap as well. Syncing with Garmin connect was very simple and Wow, tons of information on there as well. For me, this will greatly enhance my runs whether I am training for an event or just going out running for fun. I enjoy being able to look back and compare my achievements over time. You can even set weekly or monthly goals on the garmin connect site. Before this watch I was using runkeeper to track my runs but it was not very precise at all. That combined with having to lug my phone on my arm was a drag. It's nice to look down on your wrist and see the info right there. I love this watch and highly recommend it for anyone who doesn't need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive and detailed Garmin GPS watches. Pros: Reliable, Easy to use, Waterproof, Lightweight, Nice size display w/light, Easy to sync w/Garmin connect Cons: 5 hour battery time (after 5 hrs you have to charge it via USB cable to your computer). Personally this doesn't bother me as I usually run for about an hour 5x a week. If you plan on going for runs longer than 5 hrs at a time, this is NOT the watch for you. If the watch is not in GPS mode it is said to last about 2 weeks.*Update on 2/11/13* Due to a recent injury I've been unable to run but I still love my Garmin. I'm happy to report 4+ weeks without charging and it's still ON like a watch (not using GPS feature) a bonus!!

Good DD/DTS A/V receiver for the price

This affordable A/V receiver does both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, making it ideal for a DVD home theater setup. It also does a better job of Dolby Prologic decoding than my old Pioneer VSX-455 receiver. Amazon's review above already mentions most of the features of this receiver. In addition, it has one coax digital input and one optical digital input (cable not provided) for your DD/DTS source. It also comes with FM and AM antennae.

The receiver lets you fine-tune your surround sound setup by specifying speaker sizes (setting one to "Large" will send more bass to it if you don't have a subwoofer), set cutoff frequency for the subwoofer, set volumes of individual speakers, and set distances between the speakers and the listener.

As mentioned in the Amazon review, the "Midnight" mode only helps "slightly". There is a separate "Dynamic Range Compression" feature that lets you select MID (middle) or MAX compression; but at either setting it makes barely noticeable difference to loud sounds. Like me, many people sometimes find it hard to hear movies at home -- dialogs too soft, sound effects too loud. The truth is that movies are made to be listened in an ideal accoustic environment like a theater, and most homes simply cannot recreate such an environment. Hence, many receivers include features like "Midnight" mode to make a movie soundtrack less overwhelming. But they often don't work well enough, and they distort the original sound way too much.

The "DSP sound modes", which turn plain stereo sound (such as from CD or radio) into a sort of "fake surround" sound, are OK. They don't do magic, but at least they don't distort the sound into an unrecognizable mess like my old Pioneer VSX-455 did.

One concern is there are not too many A/V inputs on this receiver. Besides the coax and optical digital inputs, there are just 3 video inputs and 4 analog audio inputs. This is barely enough to accommodate a TV, VCR, DVD player, LD Player, and CD Player. And it's definitely not enough if you also have satellite TV, audio cassette deck, turntable, etc.

I find the the receiver's 60 watts of power sufficient, although I often have to turn up the volume to about -30db (0db is max, -94 is min), which is almost 70% above the minimum.

The remote control is typically unexceptional: small buttons, confusing interface, useless as a universal remote.

Not a bad receiver

This receiver packs a lot of features for home theater that are really great when it comes to playback of your favorite movies. The price is one of the lowest out there for a good-looking and well functioning piece of equipment like this, but you may find yourself a little disappointed if you're the type that likes to crank it because this box only pumps 60 watts per channel. But hey, it's an overall good value for a well built receiver.

Apartment dwellers delight

At this price - entry level for surround sound - I did not expect so many ways to customize the sound to match your speakers and your room conditions. Great flexibility in that regard.

One of these features has turned out to be essential for me, and may be for you as well if you are living in an apartment as opposed to a suburban house. I'll explain: "Midnight Mode" takes the softest parts of the movie (or CD) and elevates it a bit, so you get the full presence of the scene even if you haven't set the volume excessively high. When watching DVDs before I had this unit I'd noticed that many times I needed to turn up the volume during dialogue scenes, and turn it down during "explosion scenes". Midnight Mode (and a couple other methods of compressing the dynamic range) overcomes this problem. You simply put the volume at your favorite level (a level you will enjoy which won't damage your hearing, and which your housemates won't mind) and you will never have to be worried that a softly spoken scene will be inaudible. It will be audible - and sound very good indeed. To a lesser extent, this mode also reduces the excess volume of explosions, but I believe it is weighed more in favor of bringing up the quiet than in reducing the loud - which is why other reviews said they didn't notice it reducing the loud sounds much at all. (It is actually good that people think the effect is subtle -- if it drew attention to itself, it wouldn't be doing the job well, would it?) I think it is more intended to bring out the nuances, and it does so splendidly. Also works great for keeping music CDs sound full when played at background levels. All with a simple one-click change.

Another nice things I've noticed: This unit doesn't get too hot. Maybe because it is only 60 watts per channel (which is double what I grew up with!). Perhaps it costs less to run, as well?

In summary, I was concerned that at this price I'd be making sacrifices, that I'd be stuck with something that sounded one particular way. But it is flexible to your room conditions and your speaker sizes. No sacrifices here, except the lack of S-Video inputs (which might not be a factor for you at all).
