5Finest professional grade circular saw at any price
By Caslo Cranston
Update 8/19/07 - I have recently discovered that there is a fence/shoe adjustment that allows you to precisely align the blade and shoe for all of your speed square cuts. To my knowledge - this feature is not available on any other saw.Several years ago I had a chance to use a friend's Dewalt DW364. It was so amazing that I hoped my venerable Makita 8 1/4" contractor saw would die. The Makita is still running strong (it's 22 years old) but I finally bought a DW364 anyway. This saw was not designed for the homeowner but for the professional carpenter. It will be too heavy for the casual board cutter and the great design features will only be apparent to skilled pro's.Circular saws have been built following the same basic design for years. Expensive circular saws had strong, durable motors and heavy duty fences while the cheapies had poor fences and poor motors. The depth and angle adjustments in either group were at best a suggestion of precision.Dewalt to their credit decided to build a better saw and succeeded masterfully. The other saw manufacturers are still doing things the same old way. What's great - Heavy duty fence, clear view of the cut point from the left hand side of the saw, notch to position power cord so it is out of the way on rips, clear and precise depth and angle adjustment, unbelievably smooth and powerful motor. What's not - it's heavy yet it's mass makes it stable, although not as stable as a worm drive.Caslo

2Disappointed
By Luminosity
I have been using this model saw for roughly 20 years and have been a fan of Dewalt tools for about the same length of time. As a finish carpenter it had a lot of features that I liked and has proven rather durable. It seemed that I had finally given the current one enough abuse so I picked up a new one. I needed it for doing precision work on a cabinet project. Although the manual stated that all of the adjustments had been set at the factory, upon removing it from the box I double checked because of the accuracey I need. First the bevel angle would not zero by more than a degree, and then I discovered the sole plate was warped and while one rail was parallel to the blade the other was not. This makes the saw completely useless for my needs and to a certain extent if the blade can't be made parellel to a cutting guide this could cause dangerous binding. First Black and Decker bought Porter Cable and has made it a mediocre product and I fear they are taking the good name of Dewalt there too. Perhaps this was just a lone bad one, but just comparing the quality of the sole plate with the one on my current saw, which I replaced a few years ago, I see a difference there.

4Great saw, but get a good blade!
By Egar
Well, I have yet to buy a DeWalt tool that I haven't been happy with, and this saw is no exception. This saw makes consistent cuts and has a ton of great features. I would make two suggestions when buying it that some people may overlook:First, I would buy a quality blade for use with your intended projects rather than the one included (it cuts, but as with most blades included with saws, probably isn't going to satisfy your needs)Second, I would strongly suggest picking up the optional rip fence (DW3278). You can usually find it up for around $10.00, and it makes long straight cuts infinitely easier. Definitely a good investment!Nevertheless, I am extremely happy with this saw. THe only reason it got 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the included accessories (and lack of an included rip fence).

5Contractor Friendly
By James Perry
This saw gets put through it daily at the job. If you ever cut in roof's with beaded 3/8 plywood and then have to cut 5/8, then cut three sheets with 2' rips--you really come to love the ease of the adjusting knob; especially if you are the one cutting and you have two men calling for cuts while two men tack it down. The break has never failed, especially while leaning over cutting a left angle on 4' ply. The cord is nice and long 9', which keeps cord connection from hindering cut. Nice plate, alum. (just watch on wood to be stained-some small black marks) 50% miter, better than 45% when you need it, you need it. Depth adjuster in a great place--no more holding the blade next to the wood--lost time in the past. Good balance. One minor problem: you might have to replace bolt on knob every 700 to 800 adjustments. Double insulated-a must on the job. This saw may not be for the once in a while user, but it is for the heavy everyday man. Worth the price

5Great solid feel, reliable tool
By A Customer
This saw is the best I've ever used. For such a heavy duty product, it is reliatively light weight. Nevertheless, it has a very solid feel to it and is well balanced for keeping straight on those long rip cuts. A great investment.

5Dewalt Finest Tools Made
By Vincent Liner
As a general contractor I can say one thing with confidence, you cannot buy a better tool than those made by Dewalt. I have triedalmost every brand made and every saw or drill that I ever bought other than Dawalt has simply not lasted more than a year and quiet a few of those tools we in the hundreds of dollars range. I switched to dewalt 5 years ago with the purchase of a drill within the first month the tool inpressed me so much that I purchased all new tools. But whats even more impressive is the fact that I use and abuse this tools everyday along with others I employee, and I have yet to burn one up! In the 5 years that I have used Dawalt I have spent more money replacing cords that have been abused than the purchase price of the equipment. My equipment gets Caught in rain and salt water splase on decks of boats and it has never failed. Their will never be a tool bougth by me again with out finding out if Dewalt makes one first. P.S. The only reason I'm looking for a new cirular saw is because my 5 year old one was stolen! In my experience Dewalt makes the finest tools on the market.

5Great designed saw
By A Customer
The DeWalt saw is designed and manufactured by Sommervile Design in Canada. They make the Excaliber Scroll saw. The Dewalt Saw is very much like the excaliber in that it has very low vibration and having a very smooth operation. I had a dewalt but had to move up to the excaliber because of the work i produced, unless you use a scroll saw for 6 - 12 hours per day, buy this saw. The only problem I had was the motor could not take the beating i gave it, i cut 3/4 to 1 1/2 thickness wood all the time, althought the saw handled that thickness with ease, it could not keep my pace. If your a hobbiest cutting moderately its a GREAT saw. It has a quick release for the blade and you can change blades in seconds, the blade tension is right there in front, the top arm lifts for getting work on and off the table. Fairly quiet operation. Don't waste your money on the light, its not bright at all and does not help. Assembly is a snap upon getting the saw, just put the table on and your ready to go. I have used everything out there, besides the Excaliber, the dewalt is the next best thing. Whats nice about the dewalt, it has the same design as the excaliber in that like other saws that have the full top and lower arms that ofcourse move up and down, the dewalt like the excaliber has only tips of the arms move, the tips that move are only about 4" long, less moving thus less vibration. Inside the top and bottom arms there is a flat rod that move back and forth that moves the tips up and down. When you get your new dewalt and you see how smooth, quiet, and just about no vibration, imagine a saw twice to 3 times better that the dewalt and you have the Excaliber. I think one of the reasons why the Excaliber can take what i dish out is that it is belt driven, this ofcouse increases the power and the strain on the motor, if the dewalt goes belt driven I'll get another one.

5Great Saw, Great Price
By Byard Miller
I scroll saw wooden trivets from 3/4" red oak. In 2000 I made almost 1,000. I spend a lot of time at my saw. All of the cuts I make are inside cuts so ease of blade changing is very important. I have owned a Hegner and two Excaliburs before buying the DeWalt in December 1999. The DeWalt costs 1/3 what the Hegner and Excalibur cost. Hegner is by far the hardest of the three brands to change blades and customer support is poor. DeWalt worked with Somerville Designs (the maker of the Excalibur) to design the DeWalt saw. The Excaliburs I have, one 20" and one 30" saw were good but required routine oiling replacement of the many sleeve bearings. Customer support through Seyco was excellant. When the Excaliburs were getting to the point that repairs were going to cost what a new DeWalt cost I decided to try the DeWalt. I have found the saw to be every bit as good as the Excalibur. All of the sleeve bearings in the Excalibur have been replaced with roller bearings which do not require any maintenance. The blade holders are a much better design, they have required no maintenance during the year of use. The Excalibur blade holders would need to be rebuilt and replaced several times a year. The Excalibur tables were made from aluminum and remained slippery, an important feature for a scroll saw. The DeWalt uses a cast table and the surface wears away around the blade hole causing work to drag on the table. DeWalt says this is caused by the red oak which I don't believe. The table requires constant waxing to keep the surface slippery. This is the only draw-back I have found to this saw. If you go to a wood show or fair and see the Hegner or RBI saws demonstrated, consider the price before you buy. I can tell you from experience that the DeWalt is superior to either of these and it costs 1/3 as much! I like the DeWalt saw so much I just ordered a second one because I cannot afford to have my saw down even for a week.

1This *WAS* a good saw - when it was made in Canada...
By J. Bailey
Sometime in the recent past, DeWalt moved the manufacturing for this saw from Canada to Asia. I recently ordered the saw for my father, and the one he got (and TWO replacements) all had problems due to poor quality control or manufacturing or both. I am a woodworker and own and have used many quality DeWalt tools over the years, so I was surprised at these problems. There are two bolts which hold the table in place, and on ALL THREE SAWS the bolt holes were apparently drilled off-center and mis-aligned, causing the blade to hit the side of the table slot (on the same side all 3 times). We spoke to the scroll saw manager at DeWalt and he was very aware of the problem but didn't offer to do anything to fix it other than return our money. (He even admitted to have several saws in his office that had been returned from customers with this problem.) He said he had "reported the issue to management" multiple times but nothing had been done for several months. Apparently this affects a large portion of the new saws coming from the new manufacturing facility in Asia. Buyer BEWARE.I am not totally surprised at the fact that DeWalt is having the manufacturing problem. I *am* surprised that they are doing little or nothing to fix it. At the very least I suggested that they put a quality check in place at the factory to check for this problem before they shipped out the saw and reject the ones with the problem. They have NOT done this, but instead tell their support people to ask the customer to "drill out the holes to allow the bolts to move over". Not on a brand new $500 saw thank you! We even asked the product manager if he could have someone in his distribution center open a box to check a saw for us and ship us a known good one; but he declined saying "he didn't have anyone who could do that". DeWalt is a better company than this and they shouldn't be allowing this kind of poor quality.UPDATE: Several months later after I wrote this review, we decided to give this saw one more chance and ordered a FOURTH one. Luckily this was was finally correct, and my father is very happy with it. The saw lives up to its original reputation. No vibration, precise clean cuts, etc. Now if you can get a good one in LESS THAN FOUR TRYs!!!

3Porter Cable Installers kit
By A Customer
A nice tool which includes most everything you would want with a small router package like this. I use the offset base most, and the collet is easy to use and bits adjust easily for height. The only problem I have is that the bit chatters when used with the offset base. It has some play in it that is not a problem when using a flush trimmer bit with a bearing, but when other bits are inserted they don't cut smoothly. The other bases work very well though.

5I love this little router
By David C. Brayton
I've been using this things for about a month now. It's a wonderful little router. I can easily handle it with one hand. I am comfortable using this thing in any orientation--horizontal, vertical or upside down.I grab this router for edge treatments, like round overs or chamfers. It has more than enough power for these jobs. I used it to round over about 50' of hickory. It did a splendid job on this very tough wood. The bits are easy enough to change. There is a collet lock button. You press the button to prevent the collet from spinning and then you can loosen the collet with one wrench.UPDATE 01AUG2006. Well, I don't love this router as much. When I use this router for more than a couple of minutes, invariably my wrists start to hurt, like tendinitis or carpal tunnel. The reason is that the diameter is just too big for my hand (I wear medium size gloves). When I grip the router tight to make sure it is under control, there is simply too much force placed on the wrist joint (which is a phenomonally complicated, delicate joint).

2Not all that reliable
By E. M. Booth
I own two of these and one is down now needing repair. The other one was already repaired last summer. Both have had the same problem. This model has a slotted drive belt rather than direct drive. In each case the drive belt has worn out long before I feel like it should have. I use these for trimming wood edgebanding tape on curved panels. They run for about 45 seconds to a minute at a time and then get a rest for 10 or so minutes before being used again. It is rare when both are being used at one time. And most times they are used heavily for a week or so then placed on the shelf again for a month or more before being used again. I have had no issues with the height adjustment.Porter-Cable 7312 Offset Base Laminate Trimmer

I've tested many different laminate trimmer kits that are on the market and have found the porter cable deluxe kit to be the best value for the money. The four different bases that come with the kit allow you to do most any kind of trimming with precision and comfort. The undercut base is especially usefull for making perfect seams on large counter tops. when adjusted properly the seams almost dissapear. The porter cable router itself is smooth running with very little vibration as compared to others. The only down side that I can see is changing the bases can be somewhat combersome and time consuming, however, the added time it takes to change the base is offset by the amount of time it saves by doing the job faster and more accurately.

5Nice very nice
By Toolpig
I can't think of any thing else you would want in a laminate trimmer. It's got everything. It's not hard to change out the bases when the time comes. I wish it was a little smoother and a lot quieter in operation though. It's not any better in those respects than my ten year old Bosch. It is far more flexible though . I was going to get another Bosch but this was cheaper and Makita didn't offer one in a kit.

1Nice but less than accurate flush trimming
By J Binkert
Two weeks old and it's going back. The router base setup is less than ideal. A mounted bit should be at 90 degrees to the base but it's off by a degree or two. If you're trimming 1/4" to 3/8" off the side of a hardwood facing this is less than ideal. The bits pilot bearing runs hard against the lower material leaving a mark and the edge of the facing requires substantial sanding after your done. Checked out a few others in the store and they have the same problem. Called P&C and they claim it should be 90 degrees. The offset base heats up from the vinyl belt in the housing making the unit warm to hold for long runs.

The unit itself feels well made but adjusting the depth is a bother with the base lock loose the base is free to canter a 1/16 - 1/8 so you're always adjusting and then tightening, adjusting then tightening trying to get it just right.

Disappointing.

4Critical Instructions for use!!!
By J. Greene
This machine works but is heavy, like other reviewers said. Myself and my coworker are each 6 foot tall men in good condition. We can barely put in 6 hours a day with the tool and that includes two half hour breaks to allow for muscles to stop spasming.BUT--if used correctly, this tool does remove paint. It is slow, paint dust goes everywhere, and you must wear a respirator mask and a face shield.Contrary to the instructions included with the tool...--read this carefully--There are little adjustable rails on the left and right side of the disc. The rails can be lowered and raised to adjust the angle of attack of the disc. I found that the "cutting" side rail (leading edge rail) of the grinder needs to be set to about 1/16 inch above the grinding disc (leaving 1/16th inch of exposed disc to do the cutting) and the back side rail (trailing edge rail) needs to be about 1/16 of an inch TALLER than the total depth of the paint you are removing. (The back rail should ride along the painted surface, keeping the trailing edge of the disc off of the paint by 1/16th inch.) In my case I am removing approximately 1/8 inch of paint (typical for an 80 year old house). Therefore the trailing edge rail should be set 3/16th lower than the disc, leaving the trailing edge of the cutting disc suspended, by the rail, about 1/16th inch above the painted surface. The cutting edge (leading edge) of the disc is exposed, preventing the rail from riding along the painted surface, about 1/16th of an inch. The measurements are made by laying a straight edge (I use a square) across the disc and raising and lowering the black rails to the appropriate height. This is very easy.Plan on using an inconspicuous place on your house and practicing for about 2 or 3 hours until you get it right. Don't give up. My first day was very frustrating. Lots of clogging. At first I could only use the tool for about 10 seconds before it totally gummed up. Uggh. But with practice, clogging (gumming) is actually quite minimal when you find the right "angle of attack" for your application. Gumming usually occurs when you hold the grinder in one place too long or try to cut too deeply in one pass. You can't expect to realistically remove more than about 1/64 of an inch per pass, maybe even as little as 1/128 of an inch per pass. This equates to about 4-6 passes, sometimes up to 10 passes for severely cupped and warped wood. But this type of use allows for almost constant grinding with very little gumming. When the tool does gum up use a small, wooden-handled ice-pick to "pop" the gum chunks off of the grinding disc. A cleaning session takes about 1-2 minutes or even less. An occasional brushing with a wire brush helps prevent re-gumming on paint covered, problem spots on the disc. This technique works so well that I only change the disc when the teeth wear down and stop cutting effectively (4-8 hours of use, depending). I have only soaked the discs in mineral spirits one time and generally find it unnecessary.Beware--this tool pulverizes the paint into a fine powder that goes everywhere. You will need ridiculous amounts of plastic drop cloths and bricks to hold them in place. Then you must sweep the powder at the end of each day. The amount that you collect is astounding. You can expect to collect about 10-20 gallons of paint powder from an average, 3BR/2Bath, one level home. This must be done for both legal and ethical reasons. Would you actually dump 10-20 gallons of lead and enamel paint into your yard?In closing--this tool works great. It is a bear to use. You must use scaffolding. It is slow. Expect about three weeks of all day work to get your old house scraped and ready to prime. Buy lots of discs, about 10 for an average size house. Use only the 24 grit as the discs wear out and you need all the cutting power you can get. But beware as a new 24 grit disc cuts viciously and leaves severe swirl marks. But after about 10 minutes of use it wears down to a manageable level. If you can afford it--replace your siding. New poplar siding is about 15 cents a foot (in 2005. Prices fluctuate) in the US. Materials for an average home would cost about $4,000. Plus lots of labor. Vinyl siding is usually a poor choice. It costs $5,000, looks fake, and causes weird moisture issues between the vinyl and the old siding. But if you, like me, have little money and lots of time--this is the tool for you.(note: I post my reviews because I take them seriously and I take other people's seriously as well. [...]. Thanks :) ).

5Power Paint Remover saves the day.....
By A Customer
Restoring a 1875 Victorian has a true challenge. The outside of our house is lap siding (1"x8") and has not painted for over 20 years. After using everthing possible to remove the old finish including sanding, scraping and sand blasting, I tried the Porter Cable 7403P Power Paint. After a little work and finally reading the limited directions, I was able to remove numerous layers of paint with minimal effort. The final finish was perfect to apply a good primer coat before the final finish. The Power Paint Remover saved the day. Things to consider using the 7403P. 1)If sanding lead based paint, wear proper breathing equipment. 2)Keep the rpm's of the 7403P low so that the paint does not melt on the sanding disk, which is difficult at to remove. 3)Take your time..the 7403P is slightly heavy and working over your head is difficult. This is componded if you are working off a ladder.

With a little work, the 7403P is a very versitale piece of equipment and can handle a wide range of projects for both the professional and the amature.

5Porter Cable Power Paint Remover
By Greg Perkins
After spending hours trying to remove layers on our 124 year old farm house, and after reading the reviews I purchased the Porter Cable Power Paint Remover. I used it today for the first time. Last weekend I spent six hours on one four sided pillar on the front porch. The process involved scraping and sanding with a high speed random orbital sander with 80 grit disk. This evening I used the Power Paint Remover on the next piller (total of five). The process took a total of about 15 minutes to have the entire pillar down to bear wood, unreal. I'm looking forward to tackling the rest of the house. I am sure that this unit will pay for itself just in the cost of the lumber that I was going to buy to replace old molding just because the paint was too thick and cracked. Now I am sure that I'll be able to just go down to the bear wood with no time or effort.

I had to stop shortly after starting to use this unit and run down to the hardware store to purchase a good quality dual filtered respirator mask, the unit puts out the removed paint big time in a very fine dusk. A good shop vac is needed to clean up afterwards. Safety goggles are a must. I love it. A big 5 STARS +++++
