4DeWalt DW758
By A Customer
Having recently purchased the DeWalt DW758 bench grinder for use in my shop, I can say that it is definitely a good value. The ¾ HP capacitor-start motor comes up to speed quickly, runs smoothly with steady speed and ample power for most any grinding need. Overall, it is a very good heavy-duty general-use grinder.

The stamped steel wheel guards are not as sturdy or easy to remove as the cast iron guards on other manufactures more expensive models. The DW758's guards have screws on the top and bottom, instead of on the side, which can be difficult to remove when the grinder is mounted to a bench. A small right-angle "Yankee" ratcheting screwdriver makes bottom screw removal much easier and more practical than unbolting the grinder from the bench to change wheels. This probably won't even be an issue for most users, given the relative longevity and infrequent changing of grinding wheels with normal use.The DW758's shaft bearings are sealed and require disassembly for lubrication. DeWalt recommends having the bearings serviced by one of their Authorized Service Centers every six weeks to six months, depending on the severity of use. This could add up to quite a substantial cost over the life of the tool, given the minimum "bench fee" most Service Centers have, as well as through lost productivity to businesses from having a tool or piece of equipment out of service. For a shop tool with a recommended maintenance schedule this frequent, it would probably be better if the unit had capped grease fittings and plugs to allow relubrication as required in the shop, without having to remove it and take it to a service center. The grinders tools rests work well, are sturdy, and can be tilted with the use of the supplied allen wrench to change the grinding angle, which is a very useful feature. The unit comes supplied with 60 course-grit and 36 medium-grit wheels installed and can accept other 8" wheels with a face width of up to 1" and wire wheels with a face width of up to 1-1/4" as well as cotton buffing wheels.I have no problem at all recommending the DW758. The unit seems very well made, especially considering the modest price tag, and will no doubt last through many years of hard use.

3Had to fix wobble.
By Allan Lloyd
The price was the best on the Internet, especially with the Amazon super saver shipping. Delivery was faster than expected. However, when I received the machine and turned it ON, I was seriously disappointed with its performance. The course (36 grit) wheel mounted on the right had a very bad wobble to it. Visually, it looked like 1/8", but a close measurement showed it to be little under 1/16" total side to side, enough to vibrate the machine and the bench it was sitting on. I thought about shipping everything back, but then looked at a possible $28.89 shipping charge, and decided to see if I could fix it myself. I removed both wheels and moved the wobbly right-hand (course) wheel to the left hand side. It made no difference in the wobble, so I figured it wasn't the mounting hardware itself. I experimented with a few layers of black electrical tape shimmed on the inside of the wheel under the mounting washer and found that four layers of tape removed the wobble almost entirely. I also mounted two layers under the fine wheel mounting so that the small amount of wobble that it had is nearly gone. Results - an acceptable grinder.Pros: Lowest Internet price, fast shipping, OK after wheel wobble fixed as above. 8" wheels larger than motor case makes it easier to grind extended objects.Cons: Made in China, 1 bad wheel wobble, requires factory service to oil machine, no light, no quenching cup.Other comments: I found that my old 6" grinder had as much wheel wobble as the new Dewalt, but never noticed it even after several decades of use. I checked out several Sears 8" grinders manually. One was near perfect, the other had a slight wobble. Not allowed to turn them ON.

5A superbly built grinder
By A Customer
...this is a beautiful piece of work. It is well built and remarkably well balanced such that I really don't need to bolt it down. Its bearings are perfect as it seems it takes forever to stop once the power is turned off. The wheels are well matched for general use and fairly easy to change once the small screws holding the wheel covers are removed. The tool rests are sturdy and steady and easy to adjust and they stay put. I use it all the time with great results in my home shop. My only suggestion is that a work light should be included and it would be handy if there were a 2nd speed. Overall a real bargain for this 8" grinder.

4My First Bench Grinder
By Ty Reynolds
I am Currently starting my workshop in my garage. So I set out one day for the basics, a drill press, a table saw, an air compressor and a bench grinder. That day I came home with the 6 inch DeWalt bench grinder. Since that day, I've used it to sharpen lawn mower blades, remove burs from angle iron I've drilled and many other chores. I've used other makes of the 6 inch bench grinder, and they just simply don't have the guts of the DeWalt. The DeWalt bench grinder starts up fast, doesn't have a problem removing neccessary material, and runs very quietly. It is relatively easy to change wheels, the only improvement I would make on the grinder would be to use finger tightening screws to make it easier to change grinding wheels. Other than that...Great Job DeWalt!

5Perfect for home use
By Michael Thomas
I have used an 8 inch Jet grinder for years at my job. It performed it's job perfectly over a decade of day-to-day abuse. But for home use, I decided it was overkill. I had looked at the various Delta bench grinders, but wasn't impressed with the reviews they were given. They also seemed underpowered... And Baldors are just too expensive. That left me with the Dewalt. I have been pleased with this grinder, although I have only had it for a month. It has plenty of power for sharpening dull lawnmower blades, chisels, punches, you name it. It comes with two grinding wheels of differing grit, and between the two grits, you should be covered for 99% of any sharpening chores. Although it would be wise to also buy a wire brush wheel for metal cleaning and deburring. The unit seems well constructed. Everything assembled easily and seemed well made, although I would have liked to have seen slightly stronger tool rests. But atleast they were stronger than what I saw on other grinders I looked at. I would easily recommend this for home or small shop use. It's a great value at this price.

4Solid performer!
By A Customer
This bench grinder is heavy and well-constructed, although the parts do not go together very precisely, e.g. the tool rests are not exactly square to the wheels. However, a bench grinder is not exactly a precision piece of bench tool either, so I don't think my little gripe is that important. One problem of real importance though, both wheels were very wobbly as shipped from the factory. But after removing and reinstalling them on the motor shaft, they do run true.

5None better
By Luke T. Evans
Don't waste your money on those cheapie Ryobi or Hitachi countersinks available at Home Depot and Lowes. The W.L. Fuller countersinks are the finest available--sharp, durable, and well-made. I am a professional cabinetmaker, and every cabinetmaker in our shop has a set of Fuller countersinks. Nice, clean countersinks everytime. The tapered bits this set comes with can be swapped out with regular drill bits. The tapered bits work well for wood screws, but it seems like few people use wood screws anymore. We use sheet metal/drywall screws exclusively, and find them far superior. Just put regular drill bits in your Fuller countersink set, and you're ready to roll. Save the tapered bits for acrylic and plexiglass, as they won't crack or chip the material like straight bits do.W.L. Fuller sells an unbelievable line of specialty bits and cutting tools, and their quality is top rate on all their tools. It's a shame Amazon only sells the countersinks, but if you need a set, this is the best price out there.Fuller is a family owned and operated business out of Warwick, Rhode Island. At a time when more and more tool manufacturing jobs are being lost to near-slave labor in China, it's great to see some Yankee ingenuity cranking out products that will still be rockin' when all that Chinese junk has been re-recycled back into beer cans.

5bought the best and got what I expected
By William L. Elkins
An excellent product! It is hard to put more of a review than that. The bits are sharp and durable, and I have found several uses for the bit stops that I don't think were intended. If you need something to countersink a hole and get it ready for a screw, then you have found a tool that will definately save you time.

5Very effective and efficient little meter
By A Customer
In a few words, this is a small, light, efficient moisture meter. Carry it around when you are out to buy wood for your projects. Simple and easy to use, I checked its readings with bigger moisture meters and they are pretty consistent. It does put two small puncture holes in the wood being tested, but I still prefer this type of moisture meters to the electro-magnetic ones (I also own the smaller Wagner).

I did not want to spend the extra money when I ordered this; however, I am glad I did. I how have it and have had a number of opportunities to us it. I believe the use of just the moisture meter would give me an answer, because this allows for deeper penetration, I believe the readings are more correct.

5find moisture anywhere
By John Pashayan
In the world of insurance restoration we need to find how far water has traveled in a house after a flood. This tool is perfect to penetrate through drywall and into wood studs to detect moisture. ( use with the long pins provided). It shows the customer ( to their amazment) how wet things really are. We can then mitigate the loss before mold starts growing.

5Quality product
By J. Moseley
I do woodworking projects building furniture for all my family members in my woodshop during the colder months of Indiana winter. I also harvest and kiln dry my own lumber.I was intially going to buy a less expensive ($60) moisture tester---but reading other's comments convinced me that Delmhorst is a credible company that puts quality even in their lower cost units. I despise purchasing something that works good for a few months and then the electronics simply quit operating, even if it's still under warranty. So I made the decision to purchase the J-lite and have been completely satisfied with the operations of it since purchase. The design is simple to operate, and seems very consistent in reading moisture content. It's a good little unit for the woodworker that is serious about producing quality woodcraft, but doesn't do it everyday.Even if you purchase the material for your projects, this is an essential tool when buying the wood---not all "kiln dried" wood is the same. Good product.

5Useful, sturdy, accurate meter.
By Joseph C. Mooney
If you have read the excellent book "Understanding Wood" by Bruce Hoadley you know why you need a moisture meter.Wood expands or contracts depending on ambient moisture levels. Mr. Hoadley shows you how to calculate how much your wood will "move" in response to this, but to do so you must first know the initial moisture level in your wood. (The calculations are not complicated, by the way.)If you are installing siding, laying down a wood floor, building furniture, determining how much the wall height of your new log cabin will change, or simply verifying your toilet gasket is not leaking, a wood meter can help. Even construction carpenters can make use of thisgadget - for example to determine how much a newly framed building will shrink, which can be useful when applying siding, especially if it is more than a single story. The uses are limited only by your knowledge or wood, and your applications.I've owned the Delmhorst J-lite for about 2-1/2 years, and am very pleased with it. Although I use it less than I thought I would, most every time I do use it, it pays for itself all over again. For example, last year I installed $1,400 worth of pine board inside my house. Measuring the moisture of the existing interior wood, then comparingit to the moisture of the pine, it was easy to see that the pine would contract after installation (and using Hoadley's formula, to compute the magnitude of the changes - in this case the wood was more moist than the existing wood in my house, so I knew that it was going to shrink by about 1/16, so I took care to jamb the tongue and groove planks tightly together. Had the situation been the reverse, I would have left a slight gap between the planks.)Installing flooring, a moisture meter allows you know exactly when your wood planks have acclimated to the moisture in your home. There are many rules of thumb for this ranging from a few weeks to months, but this is unnecessary (and sometimes quite absurd) if your planks arrive at the correct moisture level to begin with.Back to the Delmhorst. What I like about it is:o it is sturdy, and well builto the readouts are reasonably simple and easy to understand.o the battery lasts a very long time.o comes with a spare set of pins, which I have not yet needed to use.o fits the hand well, comfortable.o comes in a nice blow molded plastic caseo provides a chart to correct for particular species and temperature, but this is typically not necessary unless you are a stickler for extreme accuracy.o can test more than just wood by giving a relative reading on plywood, OSB, MDF etc (that is to say the percentage reading may not be correct, but if you compare the OSB in your bathroom floor to another OSB sample it will show you which is wetter/dryer, which can be quite useful). The only negative that I can think of is that it requires a 9 volt battery. It could be a little more convenient if it took AA batteries. In conclusion, this is a well made meter, seems to give accurate and consistent results. It's usefulness depends on your willingness to learn about wood and it's reaction to moisture.

5Mini Ligno S/D vs. Delmhorst J-Lite
By Ted Carruthers
I have been using a friend's Delmhorst J-LITE for a while now, and basically love it. The case is kind of big to lug around, and it is frustrating that the percentage shows up for less than a second, because the only way I know to document a reading is to photograph the meter in action. It takes perfect timing and multiple tries to get a photo of the reading on the J-Lite.I ordered the Lignomat Moisture Meter Mini-Ligno S/D because of the improved portability (it fits easily in a jacket pocket and the cap covers the probes and the switch), its ability to read the moisture in drywall/gypsum, and the slightly lower price. The Mini-Ligno feels lighter and more cheaply made, but I will wait and see if there are any durability issues. I like that the percentage stays displayed for as long as you leave the meter in the wood, for easy photographing or demonstration in a meeting. They both got the same readings in multiple tests. The winner? Hard to say, but the Mini-Ligno is easier to carry, so I will use it more than I used the J-Lite.
