Handy Tool for the Shop

I found this tool to be up to the usual Porter Cable high standard. It was well finished, and ready to go out of the box. I especially liked the D-handle with trigger motor control which allowed for instant on/off control of the tool. Bits are securely held in the collet, and come out freely when the collet is loosened. There is plenty of power for a hand held router, and the torque is applied smoothely so the tool does not jerk in one's hand. The only reason I did not give this tool the highest rating is because of the "knuckle buster" type of wrench system used to loosen and tighten the collet, but this is typical of all Porter cable routers.

Good Router

This router is great for a first or only router because of its versatility. You can buy a plunge base if you need it, but i dont really care for it too much but it is cheaper than a new diecent router.The dhandle is a great feature it gives you alot more contol than just the two knobs found on most routers.1 1/2 hp is pleanty of power for most applications.The collet i dont mind but use real wrenches,the ones in the kit are cheap and tend to cut your fingers especially if the bit is in there really tight.The 690 series is the most popular router, many other accesories are avalible, which make it even more versitle.If this is your 1st router of your 50th, you have to have one.

I use it all day long.

This is a wonderful router. We have made blind, taporing, dovetail socket routs, and parts to match. With this router we wiz right through the ladder rails and rungs with no complaints from this router. I just wish that the bits would keep up with the router. The "D" handle is just the perfect size, and the locking trigger is perfect for all of the routing that we do. The only complaint that i would have with this, and this is with every router I have ever come to research, and use, is that you can not hook up a vacume source anywhere on the router. Luckily i work in a wood shop with my father, and he is definatly from the "old school" and we designed a great design for that. Thanks Porter Cable, Daniel Kroeker Juniata, Nebraska GO HUSKERS!!

Great Router for table mounting

I spent a lot of time researching the best router to do everything that I wanted and this one was one of the best. If you want a great article on routers, see American Woodworker magazine, February 2000. It compares all of the big boys.

It has a great soft start 3 1/4 hp motor that has five speeds and will handle any bit and wood combination I've thrown at it.

The router's base will allow for 3 3/8" bit diameters. Most of the other 3 hp models will only handle 2 1/2" diameter bits. This is good if you want a router to use on a table to run panel bits or large moulding bits.

The router's downfalls are that it doesn't lend itself to be conveneint to use on a router table. The plunge lock lever needs to be pushed and held all the time while you are adjusting the depth. Makes you wish you had a third hand. It also does not have a shaft lock, so bit changes require two wrenches.

It does have a trigger switch that is handle mounted. (a must have for any router) and you can order a dust attachement from Porter Cable to hook up to your shop vac.

What I've learned about this router is that you need a second router to do hand held work for trimming laminate and doing small routing work. (1/2" bit diameter and less) This one at 20 pounds is too heavy for hand held work. My suggestion would be to get a good 1 1/2 or 2 hp model for lighter jobs.

Super workhorse!!!

This is the most powerful router I have ever used. As a dedicated hobbyist I wanted a router to use with my Incra Jig to make boxes. I originally bought the Bosch 2 HP and tried to make one cut and packed it up and returned to get this PC. The difference in power is amazing when cutting oak and walnut. You will need the adjustment knob accessory to make raising and lowering easier in your table,(I also removed the plunge spring handle to make it easier to adjust). It is very large and heavy so to use it for regular routing I believe would be cumbersome on lighter work. The screws that mount the sole plate are hefty and up to the task. If you need power this fits the bill.

Nothing's gonna stop this router!

The first time I used this router, I could not believe how nicely it cut. Even on oak, it cuts as fast as you can feed it. I have mine in a table, since it is pretty heavy, and I bought it knowing that I would be doing raised panel doors with it. I have never gotten a burn on anything, and the speed adjustment is great. Before this, I had only used Craftsman routers, and I haven't since. I plan on getting a smaller Porter Cable in the future for hand work.

No Faults

According to Pat Warner, this router was specifically designed for use in a table. I've had one for about 3 years now, and I can't really fault it. I've never used it handheld; I have other routers for that. The soft-start is really much easier on the nerves. The adjustment mechanism - when it's clean - is fast and precise, but it does have a problem with sawdust clogging it. I was in the habit of changing bits while the motor was still mounted, but I developed the habit of taking it out to change bits and cleaning the threads on the base before remounting it. The problem of the cord I solved by shortening it to about six inches long and using an extension cord. The best was to do that is to shorten it at the motor end rather than the plug end. The motor is powerful enough to drive a horizontal panel-raising bit at full depth without hesitation. Operator hesitation is another matter though! As per PC practice, the buyer gets two separate collets, one for 1/4" shanks and the other for 1/2". The collet is tightened by using two wrenches (supplied) which is more reliable - if more awkward - than the shaft lock used on other makes.

7518 is a very good router

I use my Porter Cable 7518 mounted under a table. The speed control is essential, especially when using large bits. The soft start and relatively quiet operation are big bonuses. The only problem that I have is adjusting the height: This requires the motor to be rotated which can cause dust that is accumulated on top of the motor to become lodged in the threads that adjust the height, causing the mechanism to jam. Once in a while I have to unmount the router, remove the base and thoroughly clean. Otherwise it easily beats other routers I've used.

For What It's Worth

I was very surprised to see the 7518 getting anything but 5-star reviews. I have had mine for five years and had nothing but marvelous experiences with it. It has more power than you're ever going to need, has a soft start that's a very nice feature, variable speeds which come in handy at times, and it's pretty much bullet-proof. What's not to like?

I learned the bulk of my woodworking at Palomar College, which is where I was introduced to Porter-Cable routers. We were taught to always unscrew the base when we changed bits, so it's natural for me to do it that way. Their main workhorse is the Porter-Cable 690, and anything that will stand up to the kind of abuse that 150 students per day can dish out... I first purchased the 690 because of that, and when I made the ultimate router table in the Jigs and Fixture class, I graduated to the 7518.

Because of the weight (18 pounds), I have never left the motor in the router table, as some of my fellow students found that doing so tended to deflect the insert plate over time. I do leave the base attached at all times, but when I'm finished with the router table, I unscrew the motor, blow out all the sawdust from both motor and base, then store the motor in a cabinet. There are no scratches on the motor, and it has always been very easy to adjust the depth of the bit. I think those who are having problems with sawdust gumming things up over time could resolve this by simply taking off the motor and blowing out the sawdust when they're finished using it.

Changing bits has never been a problem because of the procedure I was taught at Palomar. I merely lift the insert plate with attached router out of the router table, unscrew the base and change bits. Pretty simple, really.

I have mostly used the 7518 in my router table, but there have been a few times when I've needed it for hand-held operations. The only drawback then is the weight, but all that power comes at a cost, I suppose. Actually, the much-maligned (and deservedly so) Sears router does pretty well for edge routing because of the light weight and those big handles.

After LOTS of use I can honestly say the 7518 looks like it's brand new. I firmly believe that I will be doing woodworking for the next thirty or forty years, and I have every confidence that my original Porter-Cable routers will still be in use, having, at the very most, had the brushes replaced.

It's a superb router. Buy it with confidence.

Six months of use and abuse, not a hiccup.

I saw that no one had a comment on this saw and wanted to give a testament on this one. I bought this saw to replace several others that were all tired and were for many reasons short on performance Skil, PC, Dewalt, B&D, Makita All 7.25 inch and would fail in less than a year of use and repair would be a Should I/Shouldn't I because of cost reasons on Parts/Labor/Time. I picked this model for a particularly hard project on a remote island and one of the toughest sources of power, a small generator/@3000W to remove a roof, build an addition and remodel a complete Camp/Cabin and Outbuildings. Strength and adjustment are a pleasure with quick release and tightening. Remember to use a little silicone. Especially enjoyed the accurate bevel adjustments and beyond 45 degrees on dormers. This saw laughed at cutting microlam's and plunging into scaffolding grade 2x10's on exposed intricate ridge/tail rafter cuts. None of my other saws would do this. The long cord is nice to lower the saw from the roof peak or eaves with no concerns, even though no one else does this, right. The adjusting handle was nice, but I settled for only two settings depending on work material location above/below. The blade guard was especially strong and was able to be set down with confidence/safety. But overall this is one of the toughest & accurate circular saws I have owned to date. Just so you know that I have received no benefits from Milwaukee,the two things that could be improved on are small, but would perfect the package, First throw away the blade that comes with the saw, they must not want anyone to buy them. And secondly make a case that takes one hand to lock and is completely water tight. A 1/8 inch thin strip of neoprene/sanaprene is the fix on handle side. I want to be able to keep my sandwich fresh.........On it's birthday I may give it a new set of brushes $6.83 and use a nickel to remove and replace them

Pull the trigger and change your brand.

I have to stick my nose in here because something happened that never happened before. I am not using a skill 77 any more, or even the Porter Cable 743. In fact I switched from a left bladed worm to a right blader just to get the toughness and power that this Milwaukee saw has. The first guy to review this saw (conceptbydesign) hit the nail on the head when he said this saw was tough. There are many well-designed features on this saw but the best thing is the power and toughness.

Another great feature is the fact that if you set this saw to a shallow cutting depth, the handle stays where it belongs or where you want it to be - down near the work -- instead of getting way up in the air where it's hard to control. Also, the blade guard handle is back off the shoe where it's easy and safe to grab. Setting a bevel on this saw is a dream. The markings are clear and the lock comes easy to the hand. On some saws the shoe is thin and "bendy" or too narrow. This one is almost perfect.

Now a circular saw is probably the second most personal tool a carpenter will own right after a hammer. I wouldn't be surprised if every saw here on Amazon got five stars, because everyone likes something a little different with their saws. You have to decide which features are right for you. There are almost more opinions about which saw is better than there are saws. That's why I used a 77 for 30 years without changing. But the first time I pulled the trigger on this saw it was clear that the sheer power was going to make for accurate cuts and pleasant work. This is also one of the lightest saws there is - at least amongst the beefy framing saws. It was time for a change. No saw is perfect - here are the gigs: This saw is a bit noisy. It has a good blade guard but it still would be nice to have a blade brake. Maybe someday Milwaukee will read this and make one that has a left blade. That would make my day.

Spend the money, you'll be glad you did

After owning a cheap craftsman circular saw for 15 years, it was time to upgrade. I actually tested out about 15 saws and settled on the Milwaukee 6390 for the following reasons:

1. Power - This thing will cut through it all and it helps with accuracy of the cut. It also just sounds great when you fire this thing up. 2. Weight - Light and easy to handle. 3. Adjustments - Easy, quick and accurate. No effort or tools required except for blade change, and even that is easy and quick. 4. Base - Large, sturdy and the cut line is quite visible. 5. Trigger - Responsive and crisp. On some saws it takes quite a bit of effort to keep power to the trigger

The downsides: The case is a giant and takes up way too much space. The blade that comes with the saw is cheesy.

The bottom line: Circular saws will last a long time, so spend the bucks on a good one, like the Milwaukee. You will be glad you did. If you buy this saw, you will find excuses to use it often.

Yamaha RX-V995 Is Super

This is such a feature-ladened high quality Dolby Digital Receiver that is blows the others away! My last receiver was a Denon, but I will tell you that this is heads and tales above the Denon. This Yamaha receiver is able to accurately reproduce the Dolby 5.1 format in all of its glory fully enabling the expressive power of Dolby Digital!

Now it's my favorite!

Replaced a Denon 3200 with the Yamaha, and immediately noticed a substantial difference in bass output and channel seperation. It also blows the Denon away with DTS and DD listening options. I have an Onkyo, 2 Denon's, and the Yamaha (OK, I'm a Home Theater Junkie! ), and the Yamaha is now my favorite, and it wasn't the most expensive! My wife says that music sounds much better with the Yamaha than with the Denon it replaced. Definitely a 5-star receiver.

Good Alternative to Large CRT Screen

While shopping for a large screen television, I had considered the 32" and 36" Sony WEGAs. However, this 43" Sony projection TV had key advantages over the CRT WEGAs.

KP-43 Advantages: Thinner (shallower depth) than the 36" WEGA; Lighter (about 100 lbs) than the 36" WEGA; and Larger screen viewing area (43" vs 36").

CRT Advantages: Wider viewing angle (both vertical and horizontal); and Shorter minimum viewing distance.

Although the KP-43 projection TV has a larger screen, it is lighter and can be moved more easily. It also is a good choice for apartments or other smaller living spaces.

If picture quality is critical to you, then you should be aware that you may lose detail in the shadows since the black levels do not seem to be reproduced as consistently or accurately as a professional monitors.

To calibrate your TV for your viewing environment, I recommend renting the "Video Essentials" DVD. In general, you may need to decrease the PICTURE (contrast), BRIGHTNESS, and SHARPNESS settings to achieve the best picture quality. With the factory settings, you may notice blooming and additional noise.

You may also notice all the noise from traditional cable and broadcast signals. Therefore, you may wish to subscribe to digital services. There is a single component video input on the TV, which may not be enough if you have digital cable and a DVD player. You may need a separate component video switcher to accommodate multiple component video sources, or you could sacrifice some picture quality and use S-Video connections instead.

Excellent Choice

I was recently in the market for a larger screen TV set. The 32 to 36 screen was going to be the perfect size given my family room deminsions. I was considering the Sony WEGA XBR, Toshiba, and Misubishi. Then one day as I walked through one of the retail stores in my area, I saw the Sony 43' Rear Projection Set. The compact size, the Larger Viewing Screen, Picture Quality, Enhance Digital Features and The Price, were very impressive. My search was over. It's been a week since the TV was delivered to my home and I can truly say that it has been a wonderful experience.

There are a couple of things to be aware of: * Getting all the components connected can take a little time.

* Limited space in the Stand for adding components.

Overall I think Sony 43' is a great investment if your considering 32 to 36" TV's. You'll get excellent picture quality at a better price point.

WoW! That's what I said when I saw them uncrating this TV on the retail floor. I had completed my purchase for a high end 36" tube tv. I went home that evening and called the salesperson to cancel the delivery. I went back to the store the next day and purchased this hot new Sony 43" projection tv. It is far less deep, weighs less, and is even .5" less wide than the 36" t.v. The sound is great. The picture is great, and it even has a pretty wide viewing angle.
