5Used to set fence posts!
By Keith Foster
Bought this to assist in getting fence rows straight. The product worked GREAT! Very pleased with the operation of the unit. We used this product at distances over 500 feet without issue. At 500 feet the instrument is not for precision work, but for setting straight lines it worked fine.

5Good Simple transit

David White makes a good product. This Transit does not have all the bells & whistles, but does a good job laying out nice a grade. Also good for laying out property lines.Easy to setup.

5Easy setup with top vial
By Ron Hogan
I almost bought a Berger sight level and then happened to see a David White in use on a friends job site. I was impressed with the quality of the level. Now that I've had a chance to use mine, I'm very pleased to have bought the David White instead of Berger. The top mounted leveling vial on the David White unit is so much easier to use. Sure was a snap to level my garage floor forms.

4Works well...watch garbage collecting inside it
By Matthew McBride
I used one of these at work, and it does a nice job as part of a larger system. I had a few problems when leaf debris collected on the top...but you will have that problem with any rain collector. It's a good buy, especially for gardeners that need this information.

5Davis Standard Rain Collector
By G. Michael
I've had the Davis Instruments Weather Wizard II [#7420] since 1995 and it always provided me with the weather information I needed, except rainfall. I always missed not having the optional rain collector and was getting tired of relying on a simple cup-type rain gauge that I had to go outside and read. I decided to do a Google search and found the Rain Collector still available after all these years. The price was less than the 1995 MSRP so I went for it. It was delivered in no time. Installation took about an hour and it plugged right into the existing junction box for the Weather Wizard II. A simple test confirmed it was operating properly. The very next day a series of rain showers went through and the rain collector registered the amount down to the hundredth of an inch. More than satisfied, and I didn't have to go outside to read the amount of rain!

4Great product for the price
By nuke
I purchased this to provide rain information to a Gwytech ET-1 sprinkler controller. A relatively simplistic product that gets the job done for a reasonable price. It does occasionally accumulate a false "tip" or two due to wind, but at .01" of rain per tip, not an appreciable factor.

5Quickly becoming indespensible
By Todd J. Niblo
Initially when I looked at this tool, I thought that it was a bit pricey for a digital protractor. Now I find myself using this tool for framing, trim work, and saw alignment. It has been invaluable in checking miter gauges for accuracy, you could use a protractor or speed square, but this is more accurate than a speed square and much quicker than either, especially if you need to make adjustments. This tool impressed me when I was checking alignment on my sliding compound miter saw. I wanted to verify its accuracy out of the box so I dialed into 90 / 0 degrees, the BOSCH protractor read 90.3, flipped it over and measured the other side of the blade and it read 89.7. Definitley much quicker than the conventional way, and you can easily use this with the table saw. Typically over time ( about 5 months now ) this tool reads between 0.0 and 0.1 accuracy, and like most scales you can check its accuracy and know what your margin of accuracy is. The back spring angle feature is very handy for crown molding, and for checking corners the back edge is rounded so as not to foil your reading in an inside corner measurement. This tool does so much more than I have mentioned, these are just tasks that I have used repeatedly and successfully. A carrying case would be nice, as this unit is nicely machined, it has a level built in which is handy and for quick checks, it saves holding two tools. So far, I am very satisfied with this tool.

5This is a mind blower. What a tool
By Bob Feeser
To those of us, who are new to the molding world, in addition to accurately determining the angle in degrees to a tenth of a degree on anything you need a measurement on, it has this cool built in crown molding feature. First you determine the spring angle, (which is the angle the crown molding sits on the wall). With the tool in place you press the button, it memorizes the spring angle which is shown in degrees, and the letters SPR appear. Then place the tool on the corner where the molding is to be installed, it displays the corner angle in degrees, press the button again, the letters CNR appear. Simply press the button once again, and it automatically calculates the Mitre Angle to set your Mitre saw, and by pressing the button once again, it gives you the bevel angle to set saw to as well. Lay your molding flat on your COMPOUND mitre saw and cut perfect moldings every time. If your saw has dead on accurate gauge settings according to the scales, then all you have to do is dial it in, and cut away, if not this Bosch unit will give you the ability to set your saw accurately as well. Another reason why this tool is so important, is that a lot of walls are not really set at a true 90 degrees, so a detent setting on your saw, at the common crown molding setting, is not always the proper angle. It is great for setting up any kind of saw. All of these things can be done with a square, bevel gauge, and protractor, but not with the ease, time savings, and micro accuracy of the Bosch. (Not that we need a tenth of a degree to cut a molding.)The unit is actually 17 inches long. The inexpensive, optional extension available for this unit, will increaase your usability, and give you the capability of measuring on shorter surfaces. One other feature is that it has a hold button, so if you are on a scaffold, or ladder, and reaching for a measurement, you can hit the hold button while in place, and it will hold the display of the measurement, even if you bump it to a new setting. All in all the tool is super well engineered. After hearing everybody raving about it, and checking how high it was in the Amazon sales rank, I decided to give it a try. I am glad I did. What a universal tool. Precision made. Lightweight, since it is housed in Cast Aluminum, and built for strength and durability, even in a harsh environment. The directions say, if you get it wet from submerging it in water, it must be dried out, before it gives you accurate readings again. You have to respect that kind of durability. One final note, it does not come with a carrying pouch. It has built in bubble levels, both for vertical and horizontal at the same time, but I would treat this with more respect than an aluminum level you may throw in the back of the truck. Therefore the Yellow Smart Tool carrying bag from MD Building Products makes a good addition to your purchase. It is a longer carrying case than the Bosch, but it fits it in every other dimension like it was custom built for it. It showed up when I added the Bosch to the shopping cart, as an item that others most frequently bought with it. It is a profit maker in the time it will save, and the quality of the product it helps to produce. This product, brings the task into the 21st Century. I like the old ways, but just think in 50 years, this will be the old way. :-)

5Carpenters, Welcome to the 21st Century!
By A Customer
I purchased the Bosch DWM40L Digital Protractor/Angle Finder to install baseboard, shoemolding, and crownmolding in an older home. Naturally, there wasn't a square corner in the entire project. The Bosch tool made exact measurements for calculating miter angles for each piece of trim. You take its measurements and calculations and then transfer them to your compound miter saw. Nothing could be easier. It took hand fitting and guess work out of the job. This a fabulous invention and it's miles ahead of the older, but timeless tools such as a square, bevel, and protractor. It also doubles as a carpenter's level. This Bosch tool is also extremely well built and cosmetically pleasing--its heft feels good in your hands. My toolbox is now in the 21st Century--what would my Grandfather think? He'd probably say that I have it too easy now that I own the Bosch DWM40L Digital Protractor/Angle Finder. Sorry Grandpa.

5High Quality Precision
By kevan d western
This is a very high quality precision instrument that willprovide years of reliable service. It has very well defined, clearly legible, engraved markings as fine as 1/64".I used one extensively years ago and took the quality granted. The past few years I've been purchasing and using lower costcompetitor's models. (Bad decision) It's not that the othermodels are vastly inferior, because generally, they're fairly close. If you don't use a tool like this very often, you may not notice the difference.Even if you do, it may take a while to notice the true benefits. The precision and accuracy help minimize the small, cumulative errors thatbuild up and finally reveal themselves late in the assembly process. This is an investment in error avoidance. To me, that's worth every penny.

5very well-built precision instrument
By San N. Dinh
after trying out several brands, I decided to give this one a try. I am impressed with the build quality and precision feel of this instrument. All markings are clear, movement is very smooth, rule is table top flat, unlike the cheaper variety. The built-in scriber is truly heavy-duty. Highly recommended for woodworking!

5perfection
By steve middleton
If you want the best - this is it. I've worked machine shop and layout work in the plant where I've been employed the last 27 years, and I've found that if a combination set isn't made by Brown & Sharp or Starrett, it probably isn't accurate. You may think that a tool of this price and caliber is not suited for woodworking, but that's not true. I use one in my wood shop at home and wouldn't be without it. This particular model has the satin chrome finish on the blade, which isn't prone to rust, tarnish, or discoloration. It also has the reversing protractor which is a big help in laying out angles. It is especially useful in laying out miters and compound miters on structural material ( 2x4's, etc.). Buy one, learn to use it correctly, take care of it, and it will last you a lifetime - it's worth every penny of the purchase price.

5Absolutely outstanding!
By B. Johnson
The work you produce can only be as good as the tools you measure it by. Don't even consider the cheap copies, they don't come close to the acuracy and quality of this square. The head is cast and ground with relefs in the channel, and the blade is machined, not stamped. The rule is laser etched and then matt finished to reduce glare. The differences are far more than cosmetic. The slide works smoothly and locks securely. All of the edges are perfectly flat and smooth. I know this seems like a lot to spend for a combination square, but the $10 ones I have tried just don't work. They don't lock square reliably, and the blades are allways rough and warped slightly. If you want something even fancier, get the version with three heads.

5Cheap Tools are a Waste of Money - Starrett is the Best
By Fredric Pierce
A coworker that said that to me once. He was right. This is the original combination square and, as far as I am concerned, the very best. I have a new C33 set and one that belonged to my grandfather (it's about 80 years old). I checked the scales and squareness against each other - perfect match. Starrett quality control is flawless. This one (the C33) is the forged steel head. I would generally recommend it over the slightly cheaper cast head (the C11), since the forged steel is a fair amount tougher - less brittle. The glossy paint is the indicator that you are getting the forged head. The cast head is done in crinkle black. Mr. Zorns' comment (see previous review) tells me that the description is correct - smooth paint = forged head. And, by the way, I would always get the model that starts with "C" - that means satin chrome finish on the blade - very, very important. As a woodworker, a combination square is an essential tool that gets used constantly. Accuracy and durability are very important. At this price, it's a bargain. Don't waste your money on cheap tools - buy Starrett and you'll never regret it.

5You Get What You Pay For
By Marc Ruby™
Most people's first response when they ask how much this set me back is shock. Usually followed by pointiong out that theirs only cost one third that much and had all these extra gadgets. If it's the right day in the shop I point to a work in process and ask them to find one place where it is the least bit out of true. And by 'least bit' I mean not at all. This usually settles the argument right away. When legs are square and cut right tables don't wobble. When cases are square drawers fit perfectly, etc, etc.If all you do is cut moulding and flooring than you don't need this kind of square. But if tiny little gaps and adjustments frustrate your sense of perfection, then take a look at products like this square or its brothers and sisters. Starret makes heirloom quality tools that will remain every bit as accurate until the solar system goes defunct.I have two Starrett squares - the six inch, which generally rides in my pocket or is busy marking off boxes, and the 12 inch, which I use in making full size furniture. There is also an 18" rule and I am severely tempted to have that around as well.I have the extra gadgets (protractor and center) for the 12" and all I can say is that they form the standard for all the tuning in my shop, and they never fail. Yes, they are expensive but at both ends of the supply chain for these tools are people who are very proud of their work.I only wish I could figure out how to get Starrett to send me free samples.

5Life is too short for a crudy square.
By J. Foote
If you use a square frequently, do treat yourself to a good one. Yup, they're expensive, but these folks earn their money doing wonderful metalwork. This is a quality of metalcasting, milling, etching and finish you just don't see very often. If you're like me, you'll find the resulting precision inspirational, useful, and a pleasure to use.Cheap squares are no fun at all, sticky, and like as not, not even square. In contrast, this 6" Starrett is simply substantial. I also use a 12" Mitutoyo set that's equally supurb. It's a one-time investment I enjoy every time I use it.

5Might as well get both now
By Bob Feeser
I just received the Starrett 6" and immediately ordered the 12. First I tried to rejuvenate an old one that belonged to my father. After a half hour of scrubbing, de-rusting, and fine polishing, I thought I had a twelve. I checked the depth accuracy, and it was right on. Then I checked it as a square. Although the end to end was correct, the center of the ruler had been accidentally ground. So if I tried to square up a 4" high table saw blade for example, it would be off. That was all I needed. I went to the computer and ordered the 12 as well. You can't afford to screw around with the device that all other tools are measured by. A cut only off 1 degree creates a 91-degree edge. When gluing and clamping that edge, it bows or skews your project. Then when you try to mate that up to a square project, it doesn't fit. Save yourself a lot of heartache, time, and money, get a starrett combination square.I have the Bosch digital protractor, and that measures in tenths of a degree. The problem is that it is about 18 inches long, and does not measure depths. These combination squares are great for taking a measurement in a difficult to get to area. You simply drop it into the area, slide the ruler out until it stops, then lock it into the base with the knob, then bring the square out, and check your measurement. No more having to dive your head under something, while you contort your body to be able to see the measurement.Pertaining to the 6 or 12, I chose the 6 first because I saw that one being used in higher end woodworking books. Authors even photographed themselves using the starret setting up the table saw blade for example. When I got it my first impression was, boy is that tiny. It probably will be the one that I use the most. I just don't want to be limited when I need to use one on lengths greater than 6 inches. It is well made, and yes it does spec out properly. I used Incra measuring instruments to check the rule, and the Bosch digital protractor to check to see if it was dead on 90. It wasn't off by even a tenth of a degree. It's funny how you have to rave about a tool that does what it is supposed to do, and do it well. Their is so much junk out there. Did you ever check your level, but putting it on a surface, then turn it around end to end to see if the bubble shows the same reading on the same surface. You will be shocked; 80 percent of them are off. Even the bubble on this Starrett tool is dead on.The square ness is right on. The typical check of taping a piece of paper to a flat surface in front of a fence, then use the square to draw a line, flip the tail of the square over to the other side, and see if the line is dead on.If you have a square that has a handle that was riveted, welded, or glued on, chances are it is off. The single stamped pieces of metal are usually accurate. These Starrett combination squares are something that you will grow to use more and more often. Soon you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Highly recommended.

5When It's Right To Be Square
By Marc Ruby™
I like making small boxes during the cold months when being in the shop is an invitation to pneumonia. Small boxes mean small tools, but a big increment in the requirements for precision. The tiny little bit off square that would never be noticable in a large table is a cardinal error in a 6" by 8" box.Starrett is the only answer if you want uncompromising accuracy. The straightedge is absolutely accurate. It body of the square holds it with no wobble at all. The bubble level really works, And everything, right down to the nifty scribing pin is machined perfectly. It's no lightweight, despite its size, and it will take a lot of banging and dropping without a flinch. All Starret tools are expensive, whether it's a 4" square or a 12" combinatiom square. Surprisingly, they are not the most expensive I've seen. But they aren't stamped out in mass quantities, they are individually inspected, and they come in their own little box. They aren't just the best, they are heirloom grade.I like the 6" square better than the 4", mostly because I'm slightly fumble fingered and there's more to hold. There's also a tiny symmetrical 3" that is great for showing off when you pull it out of your pocket.
