Fabulous. Expensive, but very worthwhile as a heavy-duty multi-function machine. Weighs a ton and takes up lots of desk space, but reliably spits out large quantities of faxes, printouts, and copies. I had a couple of cheaper ink-jet fax machines, and they would choke all the time on large documents. This one has yet to have a problem, with months of heavy use. Scanner and scanner software works well and is easy to use, even for the non-technical.

5I miss my R80
By Othanile
My R80 sat in my office for more than 10 years doing its job. Its job was to print every time I asked it to do so. After 8 years its carriage belt shredded, but a replacement was obtained and more importantly the information I needed to perform the repair was available. But after several more years of use it seemed to be time to retire this workhorse. Its replacement, an HP Officejet Pro 8500A, which came loaded with all kinds of nifty modern features, was never as capable of performing the basics of reliably feeding paper and printing on demand, and now after only 2 years it is gone.So I am back on Amazon looking for a printer. I see that HP has dropped from being the top rated printer brand to a distant 3rd or 4th. And all the current HP printers seem to have the same reliability issues which killed the 8500A. As can be inferred from my purchase of the R80, I am willing to pay more for the kind of quality, reliability, and durability that provides years of hassle-free performance. But I will not be shopping the HP brand today.

4Things you should know
By A Customer
Being a newbie, I admit that I am not an expert in home theatre systems. But using this DVD player with the rest of my system, my neighbors threaten to file a noise complaint to the police unless I let them watch movies in my living room for free. Here are some things you should know when setting this DVD player up with your amp, TV, speakers, etc.

** Video Output **

This model also has three video outputs: Video output jack, S-video jack, and component video out jack. Of course you need three different types of wires for each one. Only the cord for the video output jack comes with the DVD. I recommend you buy Monster Cables for the component video out jack (relatively expensive, but worth it). You can definitely see the improvement in the picture quality. If you do go this route, then you must have a TV with component video in. Also, you must change the DVD player's settings (see pg. 42 in the instructions). If you don't, all you will get is black and white, and I seriously thought something was wrong with either my TV or the DVD. Took me a couple days to figure out that you need to explicitly change the settings.

** DTS & Dolby Digital 5.1 **

This model has a DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder built in, so you don't need an amp/receiver with a DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder (but you do need some sort of receiver with 2 front, 2 rear, center, and sub-woofer outputs to take advantage of DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1).

If you do already have a capable amp/receiver, read below for more details.

My ears couldn't tell the difference between DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1. However, you can definitely tell the difference between simple Dolby Pro-Logic and DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1. So it's definitely worth upgrading your system to handle DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1.

** Audio Output **

Read this if you have an amp/receiver with a DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder, and you want to connect this DVD player with it:

You have two digital outputs: coaxial and optical, both use a different type of cord. Someone recommended that the coaxial was better than the optical, but I really don't think it matters too much. At least, I couldn't tell the difference between the two types. Of course the only cord that comes with this is the standard audio cord. If you want to take advantage of the digital outputs then you will have to spend more $$ to buy the appropriate cord.

** CD player **

This player also plays compact discs. I mistakenly bought a Sony CD player, so I could play CD's. This model is also capable of playing DTS encoded CD's! There are not that many DTS encoded CD's, but just like DVD's, the sound quality is tremendous. Listening to the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over", you can really place the instruments and you almost feel like you are listening to them live.

In summary: If you don't want to spend big $$, and you are a newbie, then this DVD player is worth buying because it has all the necessary video/audio outputs. The picture quality is good. The only bad thing is the relative slow access time, so loading up the movie and skipping to different chapters is slower than I would like.

5Very Happy
By A Customer
Having finally decided to take the DVD plunge, I must say that I'm very surprised and happy with this player.

I had researced DVD, and being a Sony Person I assumed I would get a Sony, but with all the sound troubles (and more) that they've had, I decided to get the Pioneer. I have a Pioneer laser and it's great, and this Pioneer DVD player is just as great - if not better. This player has performed beautifully - no sound trouble, no picture trouble, easy to follow instructions - I could go on and on.

For people who are new to the DVD scene like me, but also have knowledge of most things pertaining to audio/visual - this player is perfect. I doubt you could get the name, quality, and ease of this player from some other company without spending more. That's not necessary! This player is priced great and is worth it!

Best of all, this was a higher grade model marked down to the medium grade - when Amazon has it back in stock - get it! It's great, and has the Dolby Digital Decoder built it. If you're not sure (like I was) what all the techno talk is about, suffice it to say that you need the decoder.

All the features you could want in a DVD are here, and more. Unless you have a home theater system that is so high tech that it's almost an actual theater - you don't need all the bells and whistles. This player has the bells and whistles you need for now and if you ever want to upgrade your system.

Don't get me wrong, this is not an entry level DVD player, but it's great for anyone who is new or is upgrading their entry level DVD they mistakenly bought a few years ago. Because it has everything you could want.

Take my advice for this player - you won't be disappointed!

5Excellent Product
By A Customer
I purchased this unit last year when it first came out. It has so many innovative features that until this year were only found on units costing hundreds more. Unit has Built-In Dolby Digital decoder (You must have a 5.1 Receiver to take atvantage of this feature)as well as regular Audio Jacks for Standard Dolby Pro Logic receivers. Some people mistakingly think that unit has a DTS decoder but it does not. It is DTS compatable which means that if you have a DVD with DTS sound it will play it in a standard way (This is no big deal for now believe me. It has a full compliment of inputs and outputs including Component Video (Color Stream) as well as S Video and Composite (Regular). It has an excellent full featured DVD only remote (Oh Well).

5wonderfully user friendly
By A Customer
I liked the following features.1. an excellent universal remote with soft touch keys in a logical layout. This contasts sharply with the Toshiba M675 which has a remote with fewer options and very stiff keys.2. three recording speeds -- many new vcrs have only SP and SLP -- this one also has LP, which is good for recording movies.3. good recording quality at all speeds -- I tried a Toshiba M675 which records beautifully in SP, but poorly in SLP.4. has a one minute fast forward key on the remote, which is good for skipping commercials. 5. one touch record requires only one key6. on screen display is big, bold and informative.7. counter reset is easy and expedites returning to your starting point with another one touch key command. On the negative side.1. The mechanism is somewhat noisy (though most newer machines share this fault.)2. Rewind is slower and noisier than a Toshiba M675, for example.3. High speed record/playback may have been a smidgen inferior to the Toshiba M675 (but I could not make a side by side comparison.)Over-all I found this was a well thought out product and an excellent value.

5Sony SLV-688HF VCR
By A Customer
I purchased this VCR from Amazon.com because my old one broke and is currently being repaired. I needed a good replacement VCR and fast.

This VCR is great! As I have always been impressed with all of Sony's products I have purchased in the past, this VCR continues that great legacy. I get my nicely designed VCR with front inputs, in/out RCA and RF on the back. The controller is nicely designed and easy to use. It comes with batteries for the remote, another plus of not having to buy. A great thing is it comes with an extra RF cable to allow you to continue WATCHING cable AND RECORD at the same time! (when connected properly)

In recording experience, it works great, and timer features, everything is here and I am definently happy. Only small minor flaw is that pushing the record button to record, it takes perhaps 3 to 5 seconds for the tape to "actually" start recording, so if you want to record something, hit record early, then hit pause, and you can go from there.

This is a great VCR for [the price]! Check it out.

4A true workhorse in a dying breed
By Peter Smith
It is hard to believe just how cheap stereo VCR's are getting, only a few years ago you couldn't find one for less then $250 and now they are starting at under $150. In the past I have had the oppertunity to use several differant brands of VCR's and have had nothing but trouble. I have had a Panasonic VCR that in less than a year went into the repair shop twice because a tape had gotten stuck in the unit. I've had a Magnavox VCR that didn't even last a year and a half. I've also used a Toshiba, and another Panasonic unit at my former work, and I must say that they were two of the most tempermental video units that I've ever used. This Sony unit (that I just got) is similar to my other Sony (SLV-675HF) that is almost 3 years old now. In the three years that I've had my Sony VCR, I have never had a problem with it. It is easy to use, program, and if you can't set the clock you must be stupid. The picture has always been great (for VHS, I prefer the quality of DVD), and it records like a champ. The remote is one of the best I've used, the only thing that would make it better is backlighting (but that's just nitpicking). If you need a new VCR, buy a SONY. In a weird side story, both my sister and I bought new VCR's the same week. She got a more expensive Hitachi, and I got my beloved Sony, and of the two units the Sony is the better performer.

3A few problems :-(
By David W. MacDonald
We still have enough VHS tapes for viewing by the grandkids that we did not want to give up on a VCR just yet. Unfortunately, this one came without a manual and was old enough that the manual online was not for the same model that we purchased. The remote was an aftermarket controller without a manual (although I did find that one online). The bottom line is that we can play VHS tapes for the grandkids but we can't record anything because we can't set it up to receive the cable signal without the appropriate manual.

5Teaches great hand-eye coordination!
By Candace
I purchased this for my daughter when she was approx. 16 months and very new to walking. At first she was somewhat frustrated that she couldn't get the duck to make the repetitive flapping noise, but once she learned how to push the duck straight (not as easy as it may appear) she had loads of fun with it. She is now 22 months and still reaches for this toy at least once a day.

5THe Best Duck Ever
By Kerplunk
My daughter loves this toy. She received it as a gift on her first birthday, 7 months ago. The leather flapping shoes have been worn out! They are curved from all the walking. She plays with it every day. Its my favorite, as well. I couldn't be happier. Every child is different, and yours might not be interested in push toys. If you want to try one, this one is very durable and has suffered much abuse, without a single spot of paint chipped at all. I highly recommend this item; i haven't tried their other items but will certainly do so.

3It is just ok
By D. Middleton
Not very satisfied. The duck is very cute but does not make a flapping noise. I was looking for a flapping duck since my son loved a similar duck push toy that he played with at a friend's house. This one does not compare and he stops playing with it a minute after picking it up.

4Always There When I Need It
By MartyHansen
As a heavy on-the-road word processing user of my Palm -- made possible by DataViz's Documents To Go 4.0 (available from Amazon, which downloads MS Word documents to my PDA) -- I've found myself using my Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus with Bookman II almost constantly! Granted, its not as thorough or as in-depth as the large book-style dictionary and thesaurus which I keep at home next to my PC, but, with its portable size, I can always take it with me wherever I go -- such as to my kids' sports practice or music lessons (where I'll write product reviews such as this one), or when I'm traveling away from home for business.

Even though its volume of entries is not as extensive, the Franklin is actually superior in some ways to both my book-style dictionary and thesaurus, and to my laptop PC (personal computer). Here's how I've found the Franklin to be most useful:

For spell checking. Just punch in the word -- as you think it should be spelled -- and the Franklin will fix the spelling for you. With a book-style dictionary (as you already know), you're pretty much on your own!

For definitions. The Franklin provides the meanings of words -- which is something you won't get from your PC's spell checker. This can be very handy, especially when confirming the proper usage of the words suggested by the thesaurus.

For its thesaurus. The Franklin provides both synonyms and antonyms. And you only need to enter the word once -- to look it up in both the dictionary and the thesaurus, (which is very convenient).

The Franklin also has a very legible five-line display -- which is vastly superior (and requires a lot less up-and-down and side-to-side scrolling) as compared to other electronic dictionaries that have only a single or double line array. The replaceable (and long-lasting) watch-style batteries also give the unit a very low profile. (Franklin's other less expensive models, by contrast, use four AAA size batteries, and are noticeably thicker in appearance.)

When I acquired my Franklin, I also purchased the available Bookman II interchangeable Encyclopedia and Word Game cartridges. But, to be quite honest, since I use the dictionary and thesaurus so frequently, I haven't had much of a chance (or desire) to try out these other modules.

(Buy the MWD-1440 for the five-line display and its thin size -- and not for the Bookman II capability. The improvement in usability and portability you'll experience from these extra features is definitely worth the slightly higher cost.)

No matter where you're writing, the Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus is a great tool for finding just the right word to use.

5A Terrific Electronic Dictionary!
By paiige@aol.com
I just recieved this as a gift and I couldn't be more pleased! Its features include a very expansive dictionary and thesaurus, fun games, word lists, SAT words, flashcards, and a unique addition called Bookman. I really like the Word list feature because you are able to add a total of forty words at a time and then use your own words as flashcards. Although I have not used the Bookman, the idea of a electronic card with book length material on them is useful. All of these features combine to form an excellent hand-held dictionary that resolves the nuisance of leafing through a large dictionary. I highly recommend this product, and consider it the best there is to offer in electronic dictionaries.

5How did I get along with out this?
By Monsur Hossain
Usually when I'd discover an unknown word, I'd just infer its meaning through the context, or ignore it, rather that lug out a dictionary, flipping back and forth, squinting until I revealed the word. This handy little device has changed all that! Now its just a matter of typing in the word. And if you need to find a synonym for that word, no need to lug out the thesaurus; just highlight the word and hit enter. Its such a time saver, and when your absorbed in what you're reading, that makes a big difference. You can also save words, and run through "flashcards" of words; a convenient feature for learning new words or studying for the SAT.

The swapable Bookman cards, though I've never used them, seem like a great addition. The unit is small and sturdy, easy to take it with you. And don't forget the games; they can make passing the time in lecture much easier (I never knew how addictive anagrams could be!). The only fault is the unit's top; why is it such a pain to open? I've also had it come off a few times; its fairly easy to replace, but its still a nuisance. I have a feeling that one day when I'm not careful it'll break off. But besides that, if you're a student or an avid reading, this unit is indispensable.

4good but beware of claimed 96/24 support

This is a great DVD player. Only one problem really: This DVD player only supports 96khz/24bit ANALOG output. It downsamples on the DIGITAL output. Sony did this to prevent piracy.

5Superb quality with exceptional picture and sound!
By Kip D. Dietrich
The best DVD player I have ever seen. Expensive but worth it! Superb picture and sound quality. Dual discrete lasers. Precision Drive System enables this player to play discs that are warped or otherwise less than perfect. The Quick Access Drive allows very fast- virtually instantaneous- access to DVD chapters and CD tracks. Great remote control that glows in the dark. The Sony is vastly superior to the Panasonic DVD player I also (unfortunately) own.

2Only half a player!
By M. Bush
There are many similar purchasers of the Sony S7700 that are extremely disappointed in the sound quality of this unit and have had another piece of equipment previously who's audio was far superior and cost less money. For example, my previous player was a Sony S-530D which had within 6 months lip-sync problems, an audio that would periodically cutout, and a picture that froze and broke-up into pixels (similar to satellite broadcast problems), however, its' audio was excellent when it worked. Now that I have moved to the top-of-the-line in Sony DVD players, I am again disappointed and am of the opinion that they can not make a quality product that is complete. Thus far, I have contacted Sony to see if they are willing to do anything about the situation and to determine if the reported down-sampling of the digital output from 97 MHz to 48 MHz is the cause for the poor sound quality or, if not, whether they will do something about this issue. At this point I am not very optimistic about Sony satisfactorily addressing this issue and offering a fix via a service center. Unfortunately, out of all the buyers who have this same issue and want good sound quality, none have posted results of pursuing the down-sampling fix by MSB to address this issue-does it work or is it something else. This unit was supposedly designed to be a top quality audio player since it has dual discrete pickups with separate lasers for CD and DVD at the optimal frequencies, however, the audio output is dismal at best for both. If I were the manufacturer of this product, I would be so embarrassed about my top-of-the-line product, I would move heaven and earth to rectify this issue, we can only assume that they are either incapable or don't care.
