DON'T BUY ANOTHER SANDER< THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT

Listen... I have finished furniture for a living, and I have seen so many folks browsing the sanders in home improvement stores, and I am sorry to say this sander is not frequently stocked. Forget about dust collection, the others don't work that well anyway.If you want dust collection, buy a shop-vac. I have been through two of these over the years of VERY heavy use and I have to say they ARE the best. There is NO comparison. These are the ONLY comfortable sander you'll find. Take a look at the others and you'll see... there are no others designed like this one and when you use it for twenty minutes you'll understand why it is so much better. JUST BUY IT! The key to this baby is the way you hold it. All other sanders have to be held from the top and they cramp your hand in a matter of minutes. This sander is so comfortable I guarantee you'll love it. Porter cable has got everyone hands down on this one. It has all replacable parts , and it allows much more control by the grip design than any other, allowing you to NOT mess up your work. The motor brushes are really long allowing a long time of use, and cheap to replace. There aren't any stupid wire retainers that you'll curse at trying to put new paper on. Some guy here was complaining about the little tool that is required to change the paper, and that you'll lose it or something, but actually, all it is, is a screw driver... you've got a spare one of those already, now don't you. This is the only 1/4 sheet sander you should even consider buying. This is the one you want. JUST BUY IT!!!!

Outstanding service for 30 years

I bought my Porter Cable 330 Block Sander in 1970 and it has performed flawlessly for 30 years. I am only now replacing the four small rubber posts that insulate the upper housing from the vibration of the pad. This sander uses only 1/4 of a sheet of sandpaper, but is, nevertheless, a high quality, durable machine that can be operated continuously without failure. It is an orbital sander, not a random orbital or vibrating sander, and uses three separate sealed roller bearings - two on the armature and one on the pad. It is a tough machine, built to handle sanding chores in areas where larger sanders either won't fit or are too cumbersome and akward to use, such as sanding on the sides and bottoms of drawers.

Quality Piece, a probable heirloom!

I purchased one of these a couple of years ago to finish sand the maple cabinets I was making for my wife's kitchen. They are pretty much one-of-a-kind in that the raised panels are made from Eastern Curly Maple and the stiles and rails are Birdseye Maple. The point is, of course, this is a super hard wood, that is difficult to work with, and takes a while to sand. This sander worked flawlessly, efficiently, and more importantly, comfortably through twenty-five of these doors. I think that is what really sets this little sander apart from all in its class. It is quiet, and its ergonomics make it a pleasure to use. It does use slightly more than one-quarter sheet of sandpaper, though, to cover its base and fit in the clamps. I readily recommend this sander for finish applications.

Good tool

I own at least a dozen of these sanders and have retired several over the last 10 years at my cabinet shop. I just purchased two more. We use them hard and they roll around in the back of trucks and yes, get dropped on occasion. Bottom line is they hold up well and they have made some good changes over the years that eliminated some problem areas. They are well balanced easy to use and have plenty of power. The only flaw that I see in them is the knob that adjusts the belt sticks out too far and gets bent if the sander gets hit or dropped just wrong.I'm not a real fanatic about the "buy america" thing but I was disturbed a couple of years ago when I needed to replace the cord on one of the sanders. On the outside was a sticker with the red white and blue and it said "Proudly made in the USA" on it. Whe I opened it up I noticed a tag on the switch that said "made in Mexico". Did Mexico join the USA when I wasn't looking? What I don't like is false advertising.

Quality Unit

I was facing the daunting task of sanding a 34 X 72 quarter-sawn white oak table top I had glued up, and knew using my Makita 3 X 21 would challenge my somewhat fragile emotional state. I looked at the Bosch and liked it, but am somewhat partial to PC, and also saw the extra weight as an advantage, not a negative. I started out with 80-grit, but just was taking too long, so I switched to 50-grit, then graduated to 80, then 120. What a beautiful job this tool does: smooth, powerful, and well balanced. The key to using a belt-sander is to use a light touch, letting the machine do the work, and to make your transitions in direction (fore & aft) as imperceptively as possible. Try not to concentrate on "problem areas" and sand the entire piece uniformly & methodically. Think of the machine as "floating" over the work. This is a big unit that prduces first rate results. Oh, by the way, don't bother with variable speed, it just is not neccessary...

Beastiality

This beast isn't for small jobs! If you want a unit with variable speed, you're kidding yourself buying a PC 4X24.This sander is made for full throttle. This is not a tool for being tender with delicate work, either. For that, buy a 3X21 with fine sandpaper and an orbital sander. But to remove a lot of stock rapidly without gouging, this is it. In my business, I've even stripped the occasional oak floor for refinishing with this tool. Unlike many 3X21 sanders that can gouge and tip, this sits on the surface like a couch. It's solid, smooth and stable. And as big as it is, it moves easily and is controllable. The dust bag is effective and pivots out of the way .Belt changing and tracking are a breeze. It's so powerful, I've never bogged it down. In fact, there is absolutely NO reason to apply downward pressure; just direct it. If you only want one belt sander for a variety of in-home tasks, this is too much tool. If you need a beast to do the heavy stuff the others can't do as well or as quickly, this is the only 4X24 I'd recommend

Adequate, but I expected more.

Recently, while in the middle of a hardwood flooring project, I purchased this model sander at a local supplier. After considerable use, here's my assessment.Positive observations:- It's build like a tank and will probably run forever.- It's well-balanced and offers smooth sanding capabilitiesNegative observations:- The metal baseplate or "shoe" that came with the unit started warping after 1-2 hours of hard use, due to excessive heat. Fortunately, I had taken the advice of another reviewer and purchased the graphite impregnated shoe and was able to replace the original shoe without losing time on the job.- At 12.0 amps, it's still significanly underpowered. It almost stalls with a 50 grit belt and heavy pressure.- It's dust collection capabilities are mediocre, at best. Even when connected to a large shop vac, it clogs continuously during heavy sanding. Repeated clearing with an air hose is necessary.- The machining on the housing is poor, especially in the area around the dust collection opening near the back of the belt. The mating surfaces don't align, which adds to the dust collection problems since the dust collects in the misaligned joint. I was able to improve this some with a small file but access is limited unless you remove the rear roller.- The label on this machine says "Whisper Seriers". I don't know what Porter Cable's definition of "whisper" is, but it's obviously much different than mine. Ear plugs are absolutely essential for the operator and anyone else within "whisper" distance.Overall, I would have to say that there are better choices than this sander. I own numerous Porter Cable tools and have been satisfied with most but this one leaves me disappointed.

The Beast

This is hands down the best belt sander you can buy new on the market today for a residential/contractor. Certain companies make worm-drive belt sanders but they run about $600+ to start.This belt sander is wide enough, powerful enough, fast enough, to sand a living room floor comfortably without having to buy a rented floor sander. It removes material rapidly. The belt stays on. The belt is easy to change out. The dust collection works.1st word of caution: if you let go this thing will go flying across the room like a race car.2nd word of caution: if you get your finger caught in the front tip of the belt it will rip finger skin off like butter.This tool is a huge sander, it is probably 30% bigger than the 8amp porter cables box stores carry.Belt sanders are great, it does something no other tool can do. A random orbit sander cannot compare to its rate of material removal. A planer is much slower if you get a small planer, and takes too much off if you get a big planer. And planers are horrible at re-finishing irregular surfaces.But belt sanders also have a tendency to burn out. People have a tendency to want to put their entire body weight into them as they sand because they think it will make it go faster or they just get tired and want something to rest against. The sand paper actually rotates faster if you use a light touch which makes it remove stock faster. Let the tool do the work. The metal case on this dissipates heat faster than plastic. Plastic is actually somewhat insulating. This is also the highest amp hand-held sander I have found.Very happy. It is hands down the best. As of 11-09-12 home depot carries this for $265+taxHope that helps.

Best all around belt sander for cabinets and installing !

Used this sander in school years ago, then in cabinet shops later on, so in my later years as a hobbist I wanted to buy what I was used to, this is a heavy duty sander good for any aspect in woodworking.I have used some of the other models that are lighter and smaller but always went back to the porter cable for the overall job it does.sands fast,I will say it is a tool you must master with time.

The best sander for serious sanding

I've inherited this one and prior to which I used 2 different PC sanders. I didn't think that I could justify the purchase of this and really didn't understand what this could do that another sander couldn't do.

The first time I used this I immediately noticed its balance and ability to get an even surface quickly. Its motor sits evenly across its entire length from front to back distributing that weight evenly across it's entire platen in each direction.

The motor on one of my lower-end PC sanders is heavy to one side. You could feel it and see it by holding it up balancing it between the knob and handle and that unbalance translated right to the wood so I had to try to compensate by adjusting pressure. This is something I had to train myself to compensate for.

You can let this 503 sander help you do the work. It's ment to sand flat, and it's heavy so you're working with gravity and balance. I had no trouble getting things even side to side and front to back in short order.

This sander has been relatively unchanged for 50 years. It hasn't fallen victim to planned obsolescence and it's readily servicable. I heard good things from a tool repair specialist. This is one sander that should last a lifetime.

Rugged

I recently aquired one of these and i am very pleased with it.It is a very old model though, but looks just like this one.It is a extreamly heavy machine.Ive taken it apart and foung it very easy to assemble but very rugged internally.Plenty of power. It is most suited for sanding flat surfaces, it would be almost impossible to sand a wall, etc.Its extreamly expensive too, but of the highest quality out there. Sience it is so heavy it alows you to remove stock very quickly. Its quite a diffrence from my little dewalt 3x21.

Nice Machine

If you are looking for a professional belt sander, this is the one to own. Porter-Cable invented the belt sander, and this shows why they are still the industry leader. The 12 amp motor does not bog down. The swivel feature on the dust bag will keep it out of your way, and it's quiet, unlike many competitive models. Simply put, it does it's job, and does it well.

PC 360vs beltsander

I purchased this sander when they first came out. The dust pickup is not as good as the older model. The dust inlet is located on top of the driver roller. The older model (pre-whisper) had the dust inlet located at the back, near the bottom, of the driver roller, which pckup a lot better. The problem is enhanced with the lower variable speeds.

Big bad boy

This sander is very high quaility, and will last for years. It is very powerful, you can sand anything in about 1/2 time compared to a normal belt sander, because you can put so much pressure on it. It works great and the dust bag is great, it holds alot of dust and has yet to rip. The sander is also very stable, ive used it for hours with no fatigue. the speed is also very easy to adjust, just with a simple flick of your thumb. I highly reccomend this belt sander.

An old time workhorse needs updating

There is no doubt this set is legendary for reliability and versatility. It's been a good set, however, when I bought a new Bosch router too add to my collection, what a difference! The porter cable has a slight jerk when it turns on and revs to full speed. Not a comfortable feeling when you have small hands and have to remove a hand to turn it on. The PC is also a screamer, it's loud, it vibrates, and after a few hours of use, you're still tingling from use. I've tried 3 of their plunge bases and they are okay. Mine were hard to plunge, they'd bind, they'd jerk and pungle. Try the dewalt plunger for comparison. The newer routers like the bosch have soft start, super smooth motors, with less vibration, less noise, and overall better feel and more power. Bosch will also have a dual base kit like this in October. The PC is a great oldie that needs updating.

A good deal

Get the standard base and plunge base -- but once you get the hang of using the plunge base, you may never use the standard base again! Plunge base has multiple click stops which is helpfull when plunge routing. If you get 1/2" bits, some will not fit the standard base. Case is a tight fit, power cord must be bent a little to fit.

Two Routers in One

This is a really nice package, you get a fixed base and plunge router all in one. The motor screws out easy and drops in the other.

I use this router in a router table and with a PC dovetail jig. It is such a standard that you can get predrilled router table inserts made for this router.

Switching between 1/4" and 1/2" collets is simple. You can switch back and forth without a concern.

The only thing I don't like is the toggle on-off switch when using it in my hands. That's fine for the router table, but I prefer a finger trigger switch for handheld use.
