4A Fine Router Bit Set--Here is Some Info to Help You
By Adrian
This is fine set--strong, well-made, sharp, and packaged in a handsome wood storage box. Well worth the price. Only negative for me is the reveal on the panel raising bit wasn't quite the size I would have liked.

Here are some points that may prove helpful to you.

A. The description doesn't identify the five bits. They are from left to right in the picture 1) a bit for mating edges of boards for glue-ups 2) the panel raising bit, 3) a door lip bit--for making center panel lips that overhand rails and stiles, 4 and 5) a matched pair for cutting rails and stiles. If you are doing raised panels 2), 4) and 5) are the bits that count.

B. The set comes with a helpful how-to booklet. It is first rate. But, alongside the picture of the five bits on page 6 is a caption that misidentifies the five. The order is wrong. Left to right the bits shown are actually panel raiser, rail cutter, stile cutter, glue joint and door lip.

C. The panel raising bit will produce a relief of 3/4" (excluding the 3/8" that recesses into the rail and stile grooves). That's less than the more common 1-1 1/2" reveals on many kitchen cabinet doors. It turned out to be very acceptable for my rather small doors (20"x20"), but it may or may not be what you need or want.

D. You absolutely need to use a router/shaper table. The panel raising bit has a 2 1/2" diameter, so you need no less than a 3" throat opening.

E. The bits all worked fine on my 2 HP variable speed router--using red oak stock. (Variable speed helps a lot and is probably a must.)

F. You will want to make practice cuts on scrap, back up end cuts with waste stock to minimize tear-out, use a safety guard on the router/shaper table--along with safety glasses and use hold-downs to secure work pieces as they pass through the bit.

The raised panel doors were fun to make and they look splendid. Good luck with yours!

5One more thing....
By Bob Feeser
The large review written here, really covered all of the bases. The one more thing worth mentioning, is that Freud sells the larger more popluar 1 1/2" reveal in a set, which has the 3 1/2" bit to make it, plus the stile and rail set. They come in different part numbers starting with 97- So two of them for example are 97-100, and 97-104. Be sure your router base is at least 3 5/8" to accept them. It does not include the glue up joint bit, or the drawer lock bit. The glue up joint bit is great for mating a number of panels. Avoids the lip of one or more boards sitting a little proud, that is frequently a problem. It is not a problem, if you have a very large sanding station, belt or drum, you can send a complete door through and get all of the surfaces even. For the rest of us, a glue up bit is just what the doctor ordered. What happens is that you run the bit in adjoining pieces. One piece is run face up, then next is run face down. Then the two mate together perfectly, as long as you have the registration set proplerly. When the boards are clamped-compressed together, they line up. The other thing is the drawer lock bit, which gives you the drawer front, by (rabbetting) the back of the drawer front, including and edge lip which is beneficial to ensure a clean close. Freud bits are superior in the job they do. They leave a clean finish on the work, and saves a lot of time not having to sand out imperfections. All in all this is a very nice set. Highly recommended.

5Everything's Included!
By David S. Beach
When I received the Freud raised pannel bit set, I was very anxious to try it out. The bit set included a very detailed booklet on making raised pannel doors - I found it to be quite useful and a nice surprise. The reverse glue joint bit works very well - I have been using biscuits up to this point, but I think I will use this bit for any future pannel glue ups. It took about 10 minutes to set it up for the first time - but it works really well and I can run boards through very quickly. The rail and stile bits are exactly what I was expecting - a high quality set that produces clean, sharp edges and a tight mating joint. The raised pannel bit itself was pretty awesome - unlike some of the other bits I looked at with two cutting edges, Freud uses four edges which results in an extremely smooth cut - even on the end grain. Finally, the multi-profile bit is pretty fun to use - I have created some pretty interesting table edges and pieces of molding by just playing around with the height settings - since I don't have a shaper I find myself turning to this bit whenever a small piece of trim is needed. This bit set offers everything a woodworker needs to complete raised pannel doors and the addition of the multiprofile and glue joint bits make it a great deal!

4Freud Raised Panel Bit Set
By Hugh G Estes
I'm new to the world of wood but enjoy making many different projects including raised panel cabinet doors. I have used 3 of the 5 bits in this set and like the previous reviewer, have found them to be extremely sharp and to leave a perfectly smooth edge in hardwoods including red oak and ash. As a side note, I'm particularly greatful for Amazon's online shopping resource as my local supplier feels justified in gouging me for top quality Freud products such as these. A similar set through him would cost easily 3 times as much as Amazon is charging. Overall the product and the price are certainly a fair value.

Made panel doors from red oak and the rail and stile and panel raiser bits turned out a professional product with no splitting, which is common in red oak. I run a 3.5 hp variable speed router mounted in a table.

5Excellent Performer
By David Neal
I set out to construct an aquarium stand to match my other walnut furniture. To accomplish the task, I needed to build paneled doors. This set more than met my expectations. The doors turned out beautiful! I have always had great results from Freud bits. It certainly does help if you have prior knowledge of door panel construction before using this set. I relied a bit on past experience due to somewhat poor instructions that came with the set. Price wise, the set seemed the way to go to me, because you get more hardware for your money.

5Superior Bits
By Jose Rodriguez
I'm not really sure what foozleface was talking about. I had a project where I needed to bore a 3/4" hole through the end-grain of hard maple, which is significantly harder on a bit than edge grain. Upon the recommendation of a 30-year master woodworker, I purchased the Freud forstner bits. He told me that Freud was the best and I haven't been able to prove him wrong. I drilled through that maple like butter. Freud sold me.

5Great bits
By Rick A. Gifford
These are some of the best bits you can get. If you have experienced cheap bits that dull quickly then you will appreciate these. Chip removal is key to preventing overheating a bit. These are designed well and extract the chips like a good forstner bit should. To date I haven't had any complaints with this set.

5Best Wood Boring Bits
By James M. Fleck
For precision holes the best bits are forstner bits. If you work with wood like I do than you want the best. These bits will not chip your wood like other bits.

4A must have for any shop!
By Christopher Bogush
This set is worth the money for anyone serious about woodworking. These bits offer the most controlled cutting available when used with a drill press. Especially usefull for cutting shallow or flat bottom mortises, partial circles laid over the edge of your stock, and holes drilled at an angle to the surface. The carbide edges offer much longer life between sharpenings. Also the 1 3/8" size is perfect for european cup hinges.

4Have them sharpened first...
By KRASSEL
I love Freud cutters and saw blades. They are usually ready to go out of the box. I have a set of Freud HSS Forstner bits, and they are very good. I recieved this set as a gift and even though I already have these size's I was pretty excited to get a set of carbide bits. I work with a lot of hardwoods and you have to be careful about the pressure you use with HSS bits, so you don't burn your workpiece or overheat your bit.I chucked up the 3/8 bit to bore some holes for decorative plugs and noticed that the bit was not cutting a very clean hole, seemed like I had to apply too much pressure also. I pulled it out of the drill press and upon examining the cutting edge, I noticed it did not have that bright, shiney edge you normally associate with a sharp tool. I examined the rest of the bits and they looked the same. So I carried them down to the local saw shop where I get all my blades and cutters sharpened and ask them to take a look at the bits. Their opinion was that the bits were very dull, looked like the last two steps in sharpening them had been overlooked. So $30 and an hour later I was on my way home with sharp bits. Put the 3/8 back in the drill press and tried again. This time the results were what I had hoped for.The bit cut thru the Padauk very nicely and left a nice clean hole. I cut another 19 holes and each was excellent. Cutting the last hole was as easy as cutting the first. I have noticed no wobble in any of the bits and other than the sharpening problem have had no trouble with this set. I do think my HSS set does a little better job in soft wood and plywood, but it is a close call. Wish I could afford some larger ones in carbide...3"-31/2" would be nice for clock making. These are the first Freud cutter's I have had that were'nt sharp out of the box, so I won't let it influence my love of Freud blades and cutters in the future. I rated it 4 stars because of the sharpening problem. Still recommend Freud blades and cutters.

5Top notch bits
By rdagger
I have been using the bits for several months. I have had very good results working with soft woods on my small drill press. The bits are very straight compared to the junky Irwin bits I got at Home Depot. The carbide bits are very sharp and cut a very true hole. The only problem I have with this set is that it is missing several handy sizes such as 7/8", 1-1/8" & 1-1/4". I tried to purchase the Freud 1-1/4" carbide bit on Amazon, but they appear to no longer stock them. Instead I went with the 1-1/4" Freud steel forstner bit. The steel bit seems to work just as well as the carbide bits. If I had to choose between the Freud carbide set and the Freud steel set, I would probably go with the steel, because it has 9 more bits. Buying forstner bits individually can get very expensive.

5The Best on Amazon.com
By Toolpig
This is an excellent starter set for any woodworker. Once you use 1/2" shank bits , you'll never want to buy a bit with a 1/4 inch shank again. They really do cut smoother. The carbide is a little harder than the average bit. It will stay sharp a little longer than many other carbide bits . I find them very good with most hardwoods. They chip a little faster than some if you hit a misplaced brad nail or other hard object. Some will just keep on going. Not a Freud. This shouldn't be a problem most of the time. Freud was ranked in the top 5 in a fine woodworking bit test. It was far ahead of all other brands available at Amazon.com though. Jesada was ranked last out of 17 brands. I would stick with the Freud set. They are very good and reasonably priced to boot.

5Versatility and quality
By Pete Piccini
I am very pleased with the versatility and the quality of this set. It has allowed me to make a beautiful fireplace mantle out of solid maple. The cuts were clean with no tears, the bits I used stayed sharp throughout the routing. The bits in the set are varied enough to let you do almost any project you would like. I highly recommend this bit set to the novice woodworker or the experienced. It is great.
