4Easy Installation - Necessary Option
By R. W. Mayer
I purchased this Mobility Kit for installation on a Makita G6100R generator. In the past, I had always made my own wheel kits for water pumps, generators and the like. This time around, I thought I would see how the "pros" do it. The Makita kit contains good quality components, and the instructions were lucid. My only slightly negative comment lies in the fact that the kit obviously applies to several models of generators and water pumps, and thus wheel spacing is variable. To account for this Makita simply gives some large washers to prevent the wheel hubs from contacting the generator frame. While this is effective, it is a shoddy method of accomplishment. All in all, and all grousing aside, the kit is cost effective if you value your time to any reasonable degree...and your back will thank you every time you have to move your gargantuan generator.

5An outstanding value
By David Gancarz
After weathering three hurricanes last year here in central Florida, we decided to take the plunge and invest in a generator. We were looking for one with enough power to run our refrigerator, ceiling fans, lights, television, microwave, computer, and miscellaneous small appliances (coffeemaker, fans, etc). We also wanted the machine to be portable so it could be stored in our garage when not in use and moved outside by one person when it needed to be run. It should be gasoline powered, relatively fuel efficient, and affordable. Finally, we wanted to be able to hook the generator into our house circuitry so as not to have to deal with extension cords. Connecting to the house circuitry meant installing a transfer switch for safety and to meet National Electric Code requirements. A transfer switch allows you to power essential, pre-selected branch circuits (refrigerator, living room, dining room, for instance) from either utility power OR generator power, but never both simultaneously. The transfer switch does the very important job of electrically isolating generator-powered branch circuits from utility service. Without it, you would be energizing service lines outside your house, creating an extremely dangerous condition; for instance, you could electrocute utility crews working to restore power. The transfer switch configuration also requires the generator to supply 120/240VAC power, which is what is used to power the transfer switch/subpanel.For the list of items we wanted to power, 5000W is the correct size. A larger generator would be needed if we wanted to run our central air conditioning system, the hot water heater, and/or the electric range. We visited the usual home-improvement-superstore suspects to look at 5000 Watt generators. TroyBilt and Generac are well under $1000 and certainly affordable, but they are made by Briggs & Straton and are of poor quality, in my opinion. I bought a brand new TroyBilt/B&S power-washer some years back and after about 6 months the seams in the plastic gas tank came apart, causing it to leak gasoline when filled more than part way. I bought a new Toro lawn mower with a B&S engine which suffered the exact same fate - the seams in the plastic gas tank failed. Perhaps I am just unlucky with B&S products. But for me, I am not interested in owning another one.Honda generators were very nice and have a well-deserved reputation for reliability. However, they were just not affordable - at least to us. If I were a site contractor and was going to use it every day, then maybe I could justify the $3000+ cost, but certainly not for a machine that was going to spend most of its days sitting in the garage. We settled on a Makita G6100R generator and I have been very happy with it. The 6100R is identical to the Robin Subaru RGV6100 -- evidently rebranded under the Makita name. It is powered by an 11HP OHV, 4-cycle, air-cooled Robin Subaru engine which, according to the literature, has an aluminum alloy block with cast iron cylinder liner, electronic ignition with automatic timing adjustment, dual ball bearing supported crankshaft, automatic decompression system, and splash type lubrication. The generator is brushless, self-exciting, 2-pole, single phase and generates 20 Amps on each of the two 120V output circuits for a total of 40Amps (20Amps at 240VAC). The 5-gallon metal gas tank will, reportedly, allow it to run under full load for about 7 hours. This generator is also available with an electric start (model G6101R). The one I bought (G6100R) has a recoil-type starter (pull cord). I had no problems starting it, whatsoever. It starts very easily. I also purchased the Makita 110004-A 2-wheel mobility kit, which I highly recommend. Without it, you are looking at close to 200 lbs of dead weight to move around.I purchased a Gen/Tran PowerStay 200660 manual transfer switch, which allows me to switch up to 16 branch circuits between utility power and generator power. When in operation, the generator sits OUTDOORS and away from HVAC intakes (avoiding the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning) and plugs into a Reliance PR20 power inlet box using a 10-foot L14-20 power cord (20A @ 120/240VAC). A 50-foot length of 10AWG 4-wire Romex runs from the power inlet box, through the attic, and connects to the transfer switch next to the main power center (breaker box). Basically, you start the generator, then switch the transfer switch to open the Utility breaker and close the generater breaker, thus supplying generated power to all the branch circuits wired into the transfer switch subpanel. A nice side feature of this setup is that when the utility power comes back on, power will be restored to those branch circuits not routed through the transfer switch (such as air conditioning). Therefore, you will know right away when the utility power comes back on.

4Makita Generator 12/2/00
By John Bishop
As a custom homebuilder, I have owned many different brands of generators including Honda, generac, coleman, yamaha, and John Deere. This Makita has been as good or better than any and is easily the best for the dollar. Especially well liked by my men is the auto idle feature along with the fact that even at open throttle this unit is very quiet, very important whe running 8 hours a day. The only problem I've had so far in 6 months use is a broken starter rope.

5Makita Quality at a Great Price
By NCisBeautiful
I decided to upgrade my generator from the 2500 watt Coleman I was using. It would barely run a refrigerator. We had a terrible ice storm here in Durham NC a few months ago. I was without power for three days and we were luck it was only that long. I did alot of research into generators. Here's what I found. Honda gens are wonderful but expensive. Grenerac is garbage for long term use. Read the reviews if you doubt. Makita built by Robin compare feature to feature and quality wise with Honda. I like the way Robin builds their engines, all ball bearing construction. No sleave bearings here. I have use this gen twice so far and it will power my whole house no problem. The control panel on this gen is well layed out. I used a outlet box with a twist lock plug to feed power into my main pannel. By the way Amazon has the best price on these gens.

3purchase with caution
By Indifferent Knievel
Like the other reviewer, I bought this to use with my toro powercurve snowblower. It worked fine except the female end of the extension cord never fit properly with the toro's male connector. The connector blocks are entirely molded which seems to be a good idea for water/weatherproofing, but it was just too big. I had to jam them together and it frequently disconnected. (I was using the toro's cord lock system properly).Anyway, I tried it out this fall with a toro electric vac/blower, and had the same problem, only this time I ended up with some melted plastic and some really nasty smelling smoke. It turns out that the connectors inside the female end of this cord are placed very far back into the molded block and there was very little surface area of actual plug contact, which led to the problem. (I was using the cord lock correctly with this one, too).It could just be an issue with toro electric power tools but just be aware. Other than that, seemed to be a pretty decent cord - didn't kink a lot and I ran over it a couple of times with the snowblower and I'm still here writing this, so it's fairly tough as well... Can't give it more than 3 stars because of the odd female plug design.

5Great Extension Cord
By Jack O'brien
I bought this Extension cord to work with my Toro 38025 1800 Power Curve Snow Thrower I got from Amazon. I was a bit hesitant at first thinking I really didnt need 100 feet but now after 18 inches of Snow today im glad I got it. This cord works great! The color makes it very easy to see in the snow and with the added length I was able to clear Snow all the way to the back of my house and from both my neighbors houses. If you have an electric Snowblower then this is the Cord to go with!!!

5Great cord for all uses.
By D R Mull
This cord is really helpful. The way the end glows when plugged in is a timesaver, especially if you have several lines plugged into one another. All you have to do is look and the end, and if it is lit, you know you have juice. And it will deliver plenty of power so you know you won't burn up your expensive tools and equiptment.

5Great Heavy Duty Cord
By bryghtbuild
This cord is a must for heavy duty, high amp, power tool users. I bought this cord to go with my new PorterCable 15 amp saw because of its #12 gauge size. I wanted a cord that would ensure a proper power supply and low voltage drop to protect my tools from burnout. It certainly is handy and rugged to boot. The bright yellow exterior stands up to rough use and is easy to see on jobsites. I like the lighted plug end; it lets you know when the wire is hot and can be seen in the dark. Thanks, Amazon !

5Buy it, Use it
By Inquisit
I've purchased two of these.

I'm a small contractor who does many non-structural remodeling jobs. I've been in construction for 15 years and have used many tools and many extension cords.

Since 12 guage cords are commonly available that is primarily what I've used in the past. My experience has been that most of my higher power tools do not run as well on them (even 25 foot cords) as they do when plugged directly into the wall. With the 10 guage cord I can no longer tell the difference.

My 15 amp chop saw, my worm drive saw and my 8 1/2 inch sliding miter saw all run perfectly with the 50 foot extension. I am even able to run my 1 1/2 horsepower Emglo compressor through a 25 foot length. I was never able to do this before -- the compressor was very fussy and I had never been able to use any kind of extension cord with it until I moved to 10 guage.

5Heavy duty
By A Customer
If you're going to be running your heavy power tools any distance from an outlet, you need this one. You won't burn up your contractor's saw or planer with one of these.

After all, you spent the money for the tool...spend a little more for a cord that will keep it running right.

5Extension Cord - second to none
By Engineer
I bought this 100' extension cord (and a 50' model) to run my Black & Decker MM675 lawn mower (all bought from Amazon). I am an electrical engineer and am keenly aware of how a typical 14- or 16-gauge cord will cause a significant voltage drop which will definitely impact the performance of a high-current device.I have not been disappointed at all in this 10-gauge (thicker wire if you aren't familiar with what 'gauge' means; lower 'gauge' means thicker, higher 'gauge' means thinner) extension cord. My mower runs noticably better with this 100' cord than the 50' 14-gauge cord that my father originally wanted to use. The mower doesn't get bogged down in tall grass with the Coleman Cable cord.Additionally, and equally important, Coleman Cable makes this cord in the USA as you can read for yourself at: http://www.colemancable.com/CatalogProducts.asp?nProductsID=156I know that this cord is somewhat more expensive than the 14- or 16-gauge cords made in China you find in Home Depot or Lowes, but you really do get your money's worth in performance and also support workers/jobs here in the USA.

5Good quality, works as advertised
By Timothy J. Mccarthy
I just got mine, and have it rigged at my indoor job site. It's heavy gauge, sturdy, good quality, and works exactly as it should. I'm using 5 100w flourescent bulbs and it provides plenty of light. I can't assess the outdoor performance. It's a tad pricey but a good value.

5Top quality & well worth the money
By Steve Terry
Unlike cheap offshore reels in many of the cheap tool catalogs, this one has a very strong spring that winds up 45 feet of 12/3 SO cord effortlessly. It has top quality Hubbell wiring devices and strain reliefs, as well as a durable powder coat finish. The cord feed-out can be adjusted in 90 degree increments relative to the mounting base, so it can easily go on a wall, ceiling, or floor. This product is a classic case of "you get what you pay for". To me, Reelcraft is the "Snap-On" of cord and hose reels. Go into any working garage and see what type of reels they have on cords, air hoses, and grease guns. They will probably be Reelcraft, because they work great and last forever. I am totally happy with this purchase, just as I am with a Reelcraft 50' air-hose reel I have been using for more than 10 years without problems.

5This reel is built like a tank!
By GLVR
I wanted a cord reel to hang from the ceiling in my garage out of the way, yet immediately accessible without having to get an extension cord, unwrapping it re-wrapping it, etc. This one, though much more expensive than the variety you'll find at the local hardware store, is built like it will last my lifetime and my kid's too. Heavy gauge metal everywhere with no corners cut. It comes packed like it was china too with heavy styrofoam all around. I found a Reelcraft ceiling mount on another web site and it, too, is made to last. I would not hesitate to buy anything from this company as they obviously build their stuff for the commercial, every-day-use market. I've used it for quite awhile now and have nothing but good things to say about it.

5Supurb cord reel
By Victor H. Agresti
Reelcraft L-4545-123-3 Electric Cord Reel with 12/3-Gauge 45-Foot CordThis cord reel is designed and manufactured to be used in commercial settings such as automobile repair facilities, where it's used dozens of times every day, year in and year out. Shops can't be bothered with the frustration or breakdown, of inferior cord reels.- every aspect of this reel is high quality; heavy steel, strong spring, powder-coat finish, large support bracket, design, and workmanship, etc. As long as it's not abused, this product should last for decades. By comparison, the cheap imports are mostly plastic to keep the price low -- some even have plastic internal parts that wear out or fail too easily.- simple to pull out the cord length needed, and stop on any "click". When done, it rewinds with ease and authority every time. You don't need to baby it for the last 10' to get it all on the reel - it just goes on. The large rubber cord-stop can be easily moved so more, or less, cord hangs from the roller bracket.- the 45' 12/3 cord is rubber sheathed, so it stays soft and flexible even in cold weather. Unlike less expensive reels that might use the smaller 14 gauge or even 16 gauge wire, the 12/3 cord is more than adequate for any 110 volt tool, or even multiple tools. Top-of-the-line Hubbell brand plug and receptacle are used.- the 4' 12/3 pigtail should be long enough for most installations. The right-angle fitting that protects where the pigtail goes into the unit, also keeps the cord close to the reel and out of the way. If the combined draw via this cord will be greater than 15 amps, the pigtail needs to be plugged into a receptacle that's on a 20 amp circuit.- this is the smallest commercial cord-reel of this length. The reel itself is only 12" in diameter and the unit projects a mere 13" from the wall.- the roller bracket can be re-attached in any of 5 locations around the reel, for mounting on a wall, ceiling, bench, or wherever you want; so don't worry if the Amazon photo has it in the wrong place for your installation. For example, refer to Customer Images for a different mounting location than Amazon's photo shows.- packing was excellent, with large molded plastic-wrapped foam blocks completely protecting the reel from damage. Unsurprisingly, there was no shipping damage. There are other commercial-grade cord reels on the market, such as the Coxreel, but I don't see how theirs could be any better. I also own a Grizzly H5695 12/3 cord reel, which costs 1/5 as much as this one, and is a terrific value. However, comparing the Reelcraft to that Grizzly is like comparing a Milwaukee drill to a Ryobi drill. Commercial quality versus homeowner quality. This is a lot to pay for a cord reel, but commercial grade reels are expensive.Highly recommended.

5This Level is a MUST HAVE for serious contractors
By A. Wallace
I am a general contractor and take pride in the precision that we perform layout and construction. Having purchased this SmartTool (48 inch) with Digital Module a year ago, I could not do without it. It works great as a standard level (has the standard glass bubbles that are very accurate.) It works better to measure slopes or record slopes (you can hold a slope without looking at it, take it off the slope and read the stored slope). The audible is very sensitive, at times frustrating, because it so accurate. It will not "beep" until you are at and holding 0.00 degrees. We have dropped it, left it the rain, submersed it in mud at footings . . . while the manufacturer does not recommend this. To restore it to it's normal operation, the worst we had to do was replace the 9 volt battery and/or recalibrate the level (directions are simple and included). Also consider adding to your toolbox (in addition, not instead of this tool) an INCLOMATIC 680 by Checkpoint Professional. This is a small 6 inch level that is a must for your tool belt with a built in laser. The accessory kit allows you to split the laser beam, project perfect 90 degree angles or create a laser plane. It would not be a good substitute for the SmartTool with Module since it must be read up close and lacks the bubbles.

2Fair weather friend
By Dewit Yerselfer
Works great as long as the temperature is above 40 degrees Ferenheit. Once it gets below that you'll be forced to use the bubbles or you'll spend your day fighting this thing to get a consistent reading. (now I know why they put the bubbles in).

Evidently those who rate this item high work in a mild climate. I don't.

Lately the unit doesn't even want to calibrate in the vertical direction so I can't even use it above 40 degrees.

Unfortunately I'll be sending it in for warrenty repair.

When it works, it's nice. (Emphasis is on when it works.)

548" Smart Level
By A Customer
This is a fantastic tool and a treat to have in the shop. I've found that as a standard level it is very accurate - then when using in digital mode it is terrific. The display is very easy to read and shuts off automatically when you forget about that duty. Calibration is easy and straight forward. I originally purchased this for some rigging on an airplane but now it has found its way into my regular shop life. I'm now purchasing an additional Smarttool module to use in those hard to access areas. Treat yourself to this tool. TA

5A must for ADA survey professionals
By Michael Muehe
The Macklanburg-Duncan 24" SmartTool is the fastest, most accurate way to measure slopes and cross slopes of ramps, walkways, and parking areas for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. One big improvement over the older SmartLevel instrument is that the calibration function is much simpler and much faster. Since it takes less than a minute, I can ensure maximum accuracy by recalibrating the SmartTool at the start of each survey job. Also, I particularly like the hold function which allows you to freeze a measurement, then pick up the tool to take a reading. If you do a lot of ADA survey work, this tool will pay for itself quickly.

2Niced features, bad customer service
By David Bach
I was familiar with their older product. I used a friends a few times and liked it, so I bought this. They changed the design in in doing so, have made it of a cheaper quality. The old design was a brushed aluminum with grips that were very useful. The new design is flat bar type aluminum that is painted.

I put the level on my table saw top to calibate it. I noticed a gap under the level. The frame of the level was not flush. The reason is the end of the level had a small ridge on it causing the level not to sit flat.

I called their customer service and they were friendly. However, I would have to pay shipping to return it, and then pay a shipping and hadling fee to have it returned to me. I would think they should pay for their error, not me.

58 Years and still my best level.
By Tom in KY
As a building contractor/remodeling carpenter, my advice to anyone is,,BUY THIS THING NOW !!! I often work alone and the audible beep feature is fantastic. As I approach dead level, the beeps get faster till it changes over to a solid tone. Accuracy is exellent. I did sand off 1 paint knob but for a tool that I use so often, those 2 minutes of "set-up" were well worth the time. Most of the finish is still on the tool. Fair for 8 years of use. It measures in 3 modes % grade, inches of rise per foot and 90 degree scales level or plumb. Automatic compensation for reading upside down, for overhead work. Display is aways right side up. Calibration is simple and quick, usually when I check it though, it's still dead-on. GREAT TOOL , BUY ONE NOW!!!

5Works Great!
By Larry Wright
I am an architect and bought this level to check accessible route slopes. We got the two foot level so its easier to carry around. The smart level part of it works great as expected. I opted for the laser thinking it might be handy and it is. I use it all the time inside existing buildings to check floor level, stair rise&run, wall adjacencies, etc.Highly recommend

5Should 'a bought it last year
By Eileen O'Connor
Being in the custom home remodeling business I'm always demonstrating to clients how out of square or plumb their existing structure is. When it comes time to re-working the project I had to wrestle with a plumb bob or spend time squaring up. I've looked at the three other shooting type laser tools and found that the PLS5 is the best value for the money. Even the accessories are well thought out 'cause they help me layout square using their pendulum target and the wall bracket lets me position the laser anywhere on the job. It saves me a ton of time and I do more with my PLS5 than my little rotary laser. I need the accuracy and I like the fact that the beams settle down very fast. Squaring is easy because you shoot 90 degree angles as soon as you turn it on. I tried the RoboVector but could not use it much past 30 feet. Beams got too big and I never knew when it was in self leveling range. Sent it back. PLS5 is more money but I learned a long time ago that you usually get what you pay for. Side by side comparisons rates a thumbs up from me for PLS

4Almost a great unit if it only....
By W. A. Freeman Jr.
It is almost a great unit if only:1) it had brighter beams for daylight use, such as setting square on a house foundation etc. Inside there is plenty of light.

2) the five beams were not offset. When squaring for a foundation layout one must allow for the 1" offset. If I set the laser's plumb-bob beam over a corner mark and point the front beam to my next point, the 90 degree point is going to be 1" off. I don't like this because this is one more thing I have to adjust for. When paying this kind of money I should not have to make adjustments for this.

The PLS5 could learn from a competitive product, the RoboVector, that doesn't have the 1" offset in its square. You get a true square, not just a 90 degree. I can set the plumb on a corner point, point to my next corner and see another corner that is in square with the first corner point. The RoboVector's beams are not as bright which hurts its use outside. The RoboVector is considerably less expensive. The PLS5 is more accurate and that meant a lot to me. See specs.

The PLS5 is a good unit, more accurate, expensive, and with some limitations. A new version (PLS5X) is supposedly better for outdoors. Check it out too. Probably worth the extra.

5Leveler Saves Time, While Increasing Accuracy
By john brubaker
We build homes and small offices, and we bought a PLS-3. It gave us quicker readings on leveling foundations, and squaring up corners, than conventional leveling tools, strings, triangles, etc. It saved us time, money, readjustments, and it was accurate out to 100 feet.

We have now added a PLS-5, and are doing even more, squaring up walls, making measurements on ceilings without going up a ladder. We recently laid out an entire cathedral ceiling, doing all the measurements and angles while standing on the floor. Both units have paid for themselves in less than a month of use.
