4Finally, a good working router
By J. Curtis
With all the poorly made routers out there this router seems to be well made and handles the load. It's made in Vietnam, of all places. Not that it matters. The features we like are the WPS and wireless on/off switch which are located on the right side. We would prefer to hide the S.S.I.D. but doing so will kill the WPS function, an issue we have not seen on other routers to date and makes us wonder why. We prefer it hidden but anyone who wants to find it can, so really, it's a moot point. Setup was easy but instructions could be a bit clearer. Logging on is easy but you can not change the log on name. Only the password. We don't have the new fast wireless so couldn't test the 1300 gbps but if the operation on 2.4/5 gig is any indication, it should work well. The router default name and password are provided in the instructions and there is a label on the front and back just in case. It runs warm but not hot with the load we gave it running 1080p video. That's a strong plus. The other routers we ran did not perform as well, fast, or as cool. So, is the super high speed a must? Probably not yet as many i.s. providers, other than those carrying fibre optic, can't deliver up to that speed. This brings up an interesting question about whether or not running such speeds will cause the provider to "throttle" your service if using too much bandwidth or data/month. Remember, the cell phone providers play dirty pool and we don't suspect the isp people to be any different in similar circumstances. This router can do it with those speeds so it will be interesting to see in the future how this "future proof" it really is. We've tried Netgear routers in the past with mixed results, mostly good, and have no reason to suspect this on won't be up to the task. So far, it is reliable and fast. Setup required a full reboot of the cable modem and router but a little patience revealed fast and dependable operation on both bands which were within 1 to 1.5 gbps within each other. Either band can be disabled but some devices i.e. phones or tablets use the 2.4 only so concurrent operation, default mode, will probably be best. Overall, a solid router with reliable operation that should do very well on higher speeds when they become available with new computer wireless technology and the isp capability. Only a few computers have this wireless technology. Or, some kind of adapter could also work. Most DSL and Cable data providers can't run that speed, keep in mind. But, we did find that the router handles those speeds very fast and latency issues are rare. Is it worth the money? So far, so good.
