5Great Amp - Terrific value for the money. (Mustang III, V2)
By Bob Lewis
I recently picked up a Fender Mustang III, V2 (version 2.0) at a local GC music store. Amazon.com sells these amps as well. Bought it on 4/5/2013.This is a full featured guitar amplifier that uses digital signal processing to obtain many effects and synthesizes the sound of older Fender, VOX, Marshall, and some other well known amps. The old Fender amp simulations are especially convincing. The way this works is the guitar signal is first amplified to about a 1 volt level in a preamp, then is digitized using an analog to digital converter (A/D). The signal is processed in the digital domain to create the effects, amp models, and tones. Then the signal is converted back to the analog domain using a digital to analog converter (D/A). From here it goes to a power amp to bring the signal up to a 100 watt level needed to drive the speaker. The earlier version of this amplifier had a few minor problems (and they are just minor). I will list them:1) There was some 'hiss' or 'fizz' that could be heard at the end of a guitar strum. This was reported to be a firmware (i.e. software) issue related to the noise suppression module. This was fixed on the version 2.0 unit, which I bought. It was reported that this problem was corrected in an earlier release of firmware, on V1 units. I have not confirmed this.2) There was also a audible 'hiss' on SOME units, and the reports on-line say that this was a power supply or power amplifier issue. This problem is also fixed on the version 2.0 units. The 'hiss' could be heard regardless of where the controls were set. My unit, using a guitar with humbuckers, on most of the Amp simulations, is dead quiet. On the high gain amp simulations (i.e metal), there is some background noise, but this is unavoidable, and is due to physical limitations of audio amplifiers.I bought this unit for home and recording use only. Many guitarists will use it for gigging and it is definitely loud enough for that. What is interesting is that, unlike many other amps, especially tube amps, this unit sounds and works very well at low bedroom volumes. Amps that don't have several volume or volume + gain controls will get loud very quickly after you just crack the volume control up a bit. Not so with this one. You can dial in any level of volume easily. This unit has 3 controls for Volume. Think of that as coarse, fine and extra fine. The Fender specs quote a 100 watt power output for this unit. I really thought this was going to be too loud but it turned out to be fine. At bedroom volume levels, you are playing at perhaps 0.1 to 0.2 watts. The 100 watt capability insures that the peaks of your guitar signal will be free from clipping and distortion. A guitar signal can have peaks as high as 30 dB above the average listening level. So if you are playing at 0.1 watts, 30 dB higher would be 100 watts.Of course, if you want distortion, there are several stomp box settings and amp models available to get almost any type of distortion or overdrive sound that you would like, but in doing it this way, it is under your full control. The Mustang III has 8 different reverb types, ranging from plate to hall to old Fender spring reverbs from the '60s and they sound realistic to my ears. There are a number of adjustments available to tailor the reverb to your liking. Has much more control than on a old Deluxe reverb. One of the types of music that I play is jazz and this unit has a very nice clean jazz sound to my ears. When using the Twin Reverb model, a bit of reverb and some compression it sounds great and close to a tube amp, even with the pick attack sound. Some on-line reports say that the Celestion speaker in this unit needs playing time to 'break in" and initially will not sound so smooth - Too much high end. I did not notice this but it sounds reasonable given that the speaker cone may be very stiff when first manufactured. More stiffness corresponds to less bass or low end. It will probably take about one month of playing before the speaker is fully broken in.I was originally going to buy the Mustang II, because it was smaller, cost less, and had lower power output, but I decided to go with the Mustang III for the following reasons:A) The Mustang II only has ONE button footswitch control. This is way too limited for stage use or recording. The Mustang III has available SIX footswitch controls to turn on/off different amp models and effects - Much better for my use. It comes with a TWO button footswitch. The other FOUR button footswitch is optional.B) The Mustang II has a very limited interface for setting up the amps and effects and needs a computer to make many adjustments. The Mustang III interface is much, much easier to use and does not even need the computer to set up most details.C) The III has a separate adjust for Reverb and Middle (tone).D) The Mustang III will have a better resale value later since it can be a real gig amplifier.E) The Mustang III comes with a better speaker than the I or II - A Celestion G12T-100 which is modeled after the well known Greenback. This speaker costs $100.00 by itself.F) The III has 2 XLR balanced recording outputs for direct input to a mixer.G) The cost difference between the II and the III is about $130.00, as of this writing. In summary, the Mustang III amp is a terrific value for the money if one just adds up the cost of buying a 100 watt amp with a premium speaker, plus all of the effects. It sounds great and has the Blackface Fender sound I was looking for. It also can be set up for a very nice Jazz sound AND can be used at moderate volume levels. Since it is solid state, there are no tube or High Voltage reliability problems, and no tubes to replace. It can simulate many different amplifiers, allowing a wide variety of sounds for stage or recording use.Recommended...bobztEngineer

5Amazingly powerful
By Steven O'Neal
I've had this amp for about two weeks now. I consider myself a hobbyist when describing my guitar playing. For a sub-$500 amp, I am highly impressed. Being a middle-aged guy, I find it a little depressing that this type of technology wasn't around in the 80's when I began playing. I can remember how hard we used to have to work to get our crappy peavey amps just to sound decent. But today, you buy and amp like this and you've got more power than a $10,000 effects rack had in 25 years ago.IMPORTANT: This amp is quite intelligent on it's own, but when you connect it with the Fender Fuse the intelligence expands exponetially! I am not a pro and I don't gig. But, if I did, I wouldn't think of operating this amp without a laptop and Fender Fuse software connected. If you get this amp, you MUST, MUST, MUST connect the usb cord to a laptop running the Fender Fuse - you will be amazed!WEIGHT: Back in the 90's I had a Peavy MX 130 which was an amp about the same size and RMS power as this Mustand, but it weighed a TON. (like mabye 50 lbs). Conversley, this little Mustang is very easy to cart around - it can't weigh more than 30 lbs. Feels easy on the shoulder.VOLUME: This is not a quiet amp. I find that to get any real enjoyment out of it, it has to run a little on the loud side. This could be a problem if you live in an apartment or need to practice quietly. To give you an idea, I find that I have to turn it up to where the amp sound drowns out the natural sound of my strings. This is roughly equivalent to the level of sound you'd make if you were yelling accross the house for someone.Bottom line, unless you're a pro or a studio muscian, I don't see how you could have any buyers' remorse at this price point.
