Product Description

An industry leader for over 50 years, the Freud name equals quality, precision and craftsmanship. Freud router bits feature Freud made TiCo Hi-Density Carbide for maximum cutting life. Each bit is individually balanced, giving a cut above the rest. Revolutionary Quadra-Cut design employs four cutting edges vs. two, for a flawless finish that requires no sanding or rework. Two carbide cutters have an up-shear angle to remove most of the stock while the second pair of down-shear cutters makes a final cut to produce an ultra clean edge. Soften furniture edges and create decorative beadsUse on all composition materials, plywoods, hardwoods and softwoods. Use with hand-held and table-mounted portable routers.

4Innovative design. Works great, but... caveat emptor! A headache may be in store. Read on.

I ordered this item, Freud 34-136 Quadra-Cut 1.25" RO bit, from Amazon, at a great price. Like magic, it arrived the very next day! The photo is an image of a Freud 2-cutter bit, the pre-Quadra-Cut model, but the part number and description indicated it's a QC bit, so I figured the photo must have been a misprint. What I received is a regular two-cutter Freud RO bit, consistent with the photo but not as described. It's in a Freud package with the model 34-136 printed on it, but without the yellow "Quadra-Cut" label. Is this an Amazon issue or a Freudian slip? I don't know what's going on here, but I'm sending it back for a replacement. I'll update this review with the results of the order, and hopefully with a review of the product. In the meantime, you may want to order this elsewhere. The three stars is "provisional." You have to choose from one to five stars to post a review, even a procedural note such as this. I don't want to slam the product unfairly, just to alert other buyers to this issue.Postlogue: After discussing this with Amazon and Freud, I believe this is primarily a Freud issue. When they converted from their 2-wing roundover bits to the quadra-cut 4-wing bits, they used exactly the same part nos. So, until a retailer's stock of the 2-wing bits has been depleted, that's what they ship. First-in, first-out. Amazon promptly shipped me a replacement, also an old-model two-wing bit, so I returned them both for a refund. Amazon has great customer service when it comes to processing orders and returns, but of course it's asking too much to change their description to match the product. I wonder how many others have ordered and returned the same bits I received, during the two years since the QC line was introduced. The only way Amazon will get rid of their old stock will be to describe them correctly and clear them out at a discount. But I'm sure UPS doesn't mind recycling them.On a positive note, I ordered a few other sizes of Freud QC roundover bits from Amazon and they were all QC's, as described, so don't avoid ordering these from Amazon. Try them out and see what you get.The QC bits work as advertised. Cleaner cuts on the bead than regular bits. Note that the two smaller, reverse-rake cutters only cover the bead, the step at the bottom of the bit (as oriented in a table, meaning the part of the cutter furthest from the bearing). The roundover part of the QC bit still has the same two cutters as the old model. If you don't intend to use the step portion of the bit, the QC offers no advantage. Those who rout raised panels and table edges, etc., know that the step is the part where tear-out is most likely to occur, so the design does make sense.Under the circumstances, I'm upping my bid on this (the Quadra-Cut version) from three stars to four.
