5Wow - even brighter than a TK 75
By JohnSpartan
I have been using flashlights professionally for more than three decades. Started with a BIANCHI, changed to MAG-Lite 4 D and then to MAG-Lite charger for more than 20 years (now updated with a MiniStar 31 MR-EX and 1,000 lumens). In January 2013 I bought a FENIX TK 75 and have been very satisfied with it.After FENIX just has started to offer the TK 75 a few time ago, another bright spotlight is available; this one has incredible 3,500 ANSI-lumens. Of course you can say "They can measure whatever they want - paper is patient" and of course you can let the brightness appear much higher than it really is (remember those "5,000-lumens-flashlights" for $ 70.- directly from any never-heard-of-company in China). Most of those buyers are disappointed when they find out, that brightness, price and quality are on the same level: LOWThis RC 40 was currently (04/20/2013) tested by a very serious and independent website in Germany (taschenlampen-tests.de - English version available) by using a so called "integrated sphere" (also known as "Ulbricht sphere"): Real existing 3,360 lumens !! And additionally my own fresh experiences tell me, that here is a lot more brightness than from a TK 75 ( 4 x XM-L U 2 instead of 3 x ).My field testing acknowledged, that you can really identify things in the size of a sheet of paper in about 800 yards' distance (flashlight mounted on a tripod, ZEISS 20x60 S, BUSHNELL rangefinder). The flashlight: Length 300 mm (which is nearly the same like a MAG-Lite 3 D), body's diameter 54mm and head's diameter 108 mm. So the RC 40 is a little slimmer than the TK 75, but longer. The weight incl. battery-pack is about three pounds (1,310 grams). So it is not a flashlight just to use incidentially. You can choose 35, 150, 550, 1500 and 3500 lumens by clicking the rear of the two buttons below the head. This one also activates strobo by clicking twice. The top button switches ON and OFF.Rechargeable battery and charger are built-in and you can charge by putting a cord into the tail-cap. Here you can also activate a battery fuel gauge. FENIX promises 150 minutes charging for 90% and 210 minutes for 100%.The new RAPID SCAN BEAM produces really an amazing combination of throw and flood (overall coverage) including a 90 degrees wide beam for close-range coverage (TK 75 has about 80 degrees) without any warm-up period.Flashlight set includes a battery-pack, charging cord for 100-240 volts and 12 volts. Threads are cut precisely, anodizing appears to be perfect, both buttons can easily be used with also big hands (as mine) or by wearing gloves.RC 40 has an integrated protection against over-discharge, over-charge and over-heating.Of course, this flashlight is not cheap, but compared to others from OLIGHT or NITECORE for example it is on the same level, but with an unbelieveable brightness. So it is first choice for a wealthy consumer - or a brightness junkie like me.
