4Hitachi CB75 guide conversion assembly
By Kekani
I purchased this, finally, because I wanted to get rid of the cost of the Stellite blades, and because there are more high quality blades in the 3/4"- 1 1/4" range, at better cost. First off, the end result - with a Highland 3/4" Woodslicer, this setup absolutely BLOWS AWAY anything I could get with the Stellite Blade. The only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars is what it took to get there, and 1 of the bearings on the top guide is at absolute max adjustment away from the blade, and it still "just" touches. I was going to send it back, but I have other plans for the top, like eventually installing a Carter 500 (oddly enough, Carter doesn't have a "nice" bracket and shaft setup for this saw and the stock guides, but has parts that will fit with this guide assembly - this is way down the road). The bottom bracket fits well, and adjusted fine. The setup of the bearings took a LONG time because they kept moving - its really difficult in that small space to fit anything to assist in setting the bearings to tighten it down, not to mention the one bearing on the top guide that is at max.The quality seems to be cheap stamped metal, but its really heavy compared to how it looks (weight is probably in the shaft and bearings, and not the bracket itself). I could probably weld up a better, more solid bracket with steel from Home Depot, but I'd still be missing one key piece - the bracket that holds the shaft for the upper guide. Could probably fabricate that as well, but that would take more effort than the cost of the guides itself (for me anyway).Once in action, the Woodslicer cuts really fast, and quiet. There was no problem with setting up the tension to no wobble - the scale on the saw was accurate for a 3/4" blade. I didn't even reset the drift for my first test cut, and it was straight on all sides. The Stellite seems more finicky to fence alignment. In the end, this review is not really about the guides itself, but more about what it brings to the table in the form of blade selection. My friend used Lenox blades in the past (on another saw) which he liked (the blades, not the saw) and got the Hitachi CB75 for his production shop. He's planning on coming over and running test cuts (which I know he'll like), and he plans on installing Lenox blades as he's used in the past. Would I buy it again? For a "first time" purchase, yes. If this one ever breaks, I'll spend a little more on the Carter Guides and fabricate my own brackets, using the ones I have as a guide, no pun intended.
